SLIFT’s ILION is a towering work of rock music, a steamrolling record that starts at the highest peak and never lets up. If that sounds overwhelming, trust that this Toulouse trio have you in good hands. Their third full-length feels massive and oceanic, merging the furious intensity of metal and the wigged-out guitar heroics of psych rock with post-rock’s epic sense of scale. ILION is the kind of music where you listen to it and think to yourself, “This came from only three people?” It sure did, and SLIFT’s utter ferocity is way more than a tempest in a teacup. It reaches outwards for miles and creates new zeniths within unforeseen horizons of rock.
SLIFT is made up of brothers Jean and Remí Fossat and Canek Flores, who first met the brothers Fossat at (of all things) school. After the band formally came together in 2016, they quickly made their 2017 debut EP, Space Is the Key, which merged stoner rock’s heaviness with the sugar-rush qualities of garage rock. From there, things only got weirder: The trio experimented with faster tempos and bongos(!) on the following year’s full-length La Planeté Inexploreé, and in 2019, their KEXP session recorded at the Trans Musicales festival in Rennes became a viral sensation, racking up more than 1.4 million YouTube views.
UMMON from 2020 represented SLIFT’s pivot towards the celestially crushing confines of psych-metal, marked by Remí’s rolling basslines and Flores’s relentless skin-pounding. But nothing in their already-estimable catalog could prepare you for ILION, a huge-sounding and melodically dense record that at once recalls Godspeed! You Black Emperor’s perpetually uplifting surge, the passionate burn of post-hardcore legends …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Led Zep’s psychotic blues-rock mysticism, and the psychedelic swirl of Swedish experimental greats Goat.
But reducing ILION to a list of reference points would be missing the point—specifically, that you really have to sit down and experience this thing and let it take over your ear space. The record marks the band’s second Sub Pop release, following last year’s Singles Club 7” release of “Unseen” b/w “The Real Unseen,” which were outtakes from the UMMON sessions and offered a mere taste of the pure expansiveness on display here. Over eight tracks and 75+ minutes, SLIFT unleash the fury with walls of guitar and multi-part song structures that make you feel as if you’re being taken on a true journey—from the pure oblivion of ILION’s title track and the stretched-out abandon of centerpiece “Weavers’ Weft” to the intense climax of the 12-and-a-half-minute epic “The Story That Has Never Been Told.”
But what is this journey? To hear SLIFT tell it, Joseph Campbell would be proud of the thematic path laid out before the listeners on ILION, which is named after the Ancient Greek word for the city of Troy and, conceptually speaking, picks up where UMMON left off: “This is an album constructed in the manner of a Homeric story,” the band explains. “Where the two records differ is that ILION is about human emotions and feelings, whereas UMMON was telling an epic story with a distant view. ILION represents the fall of humanity and the rebirth of all things in time and space.”
Heavy shit, to be sure—but fear not, because you don’t need a 12-sided die and a copy of The Odyssey to get what SLIFT are dishing out on ILION. All you need are two ears, an open mind, and the willingness to be truly blown away.

Gruff Rhys is pleased to announce his new album “Sadness Sets Me Free” which will be released by Rough Trade Records on 26.01.2024. This incredibly will be the 25th album he has released in his 35 year career individually, collaboratively and as a member of various bands. “Sadness Sets Me Free” is also the follow up to 2021’s “Seeking new Gods”, his first solo top ten record. The album will be available in a range of formats including a unique Dinked edition on ‘honeycomb neo-neapolitan’ vinyl, an LP sleeve with ‘container doors’ and a bonus 7” with exclusive audio for the first 1500 copies. A gatefold soft pack CD also includes a pull out poster.
Lead-off single “Celestial Candyfloss” is a telling four minute glimpse of the forthcoming album, revealing the heady wonders and classic pop sounds within. Soaring strings carry the sweet melodies along, anchored by just enough necessary melancholy to add emotional ballast. The eye-popping video was created by long-time collaborator Mark James and compliments the scope and style of the song on a galactic scale.
“Celestial Candyfloss” is, Gruff says, “an attempted pocket symphony about the cosmic lengths that people will travel in the pursuit of love and acceptance. Mark James has brought the Sadness Sets Me Free album cover to life & managed to place me watching TV interference in a shipping container that’s lost in space. For what is apparently the 25th album I’ve had a hand in writing I’ve reverted to a rich seam of inspiration relating to shedding some light on sadness and the general terror of cosmic loneliness.”
And so it was that Gruff and his band – Osian Gwynedd (piano), Huw V Williams (double bass) and former Flaming Lips drummer turned Super Furry Animals archivist Kliph Scurlock (drums) piled into a van driven by the late, legendary tour manager “Dr” Kiko Loiacono and raced from Dunkirk, where they had just played the final show of a tour of Spain and France, to the outskirts of Paris in the early hours of a March morning in 2022. There, in La Frette Studios, a recording facility installed in a 19th-century house, Gruff and his road-hardened group tracked “Sadness Sets Me Free” in just three days. Backing vocals were added along the way by Kate Stables from This Is The Kit along with additional strings and orchestration and it was mixed between Marseille and Cardiff. What finally emerged from these intense bouts of cross-continental activity was Gruff’s most accomplished and beautiful record to date.
In a career that has taken him from the slate-mining towns of north-west Wales, down to the expat communities of Patagonia, up to the Mandan tribe of the Great Plains of North America and across to the Tuareg rock groups of the Saharan Desert, Gruff Rhys, one of Britain’s most beloved and successful singer-songwriters, has always been willing to follow an opportunity, wherever it may lead him. “At this point I quite like working with serendipity,” he says. “Not in a cosmic way, [but] I try and leave things open to chance encounters and chance geography. TORRES — the recording project of New York artist Mackenzie Scott — announces her new album, What an enormous room, out January 26, 2024, on Merge, and presents its lead single/video, “Collect.” Alongside the announcement, Scott unveils a 2024 North American, UK and European tour, with more dates still to come. What an enormous room was recorded at Durham, North Carolina’s Stadium Heights Sound last fall and follows the release of Scott’s celebrated 2021 album, Thirstier. “Collect” introduces the new chapter with sharp production, blown-out synths, and a confrontation: “I know what you expect // You expect to be first // You claim what you didn’t earn // Is that what you deserve?” Scott exudes confidence as she barrels down a line of questioning: “Did I hit a nerve?” Scott adds, “This song is about justice being served. The rage song I’ve been trying to write for years!” These emotions are on full display in the song’s accompanying video, directed by Dani Okon.
TORRES’ career spans a decade, six studio albums, countless one-offs, tours, articles, and conversations, each marked by a dedication to creation that treats the ongoing act itself with as much preciousness as what is left in the record. What an enormous room was produced by Scott and Sarah Jaffe, with engineering by Ryan Pickett, mixing done overseas in Bristol by TJ Allen, and mastering by indie stalwart Heba Kadry. Each of the album’s ten songs was written by Scott, who plays guitar, bass, synths, organ, piano, and programmed drums, with Jaffe and Allen also contributing to various instrumentation.
To quote Julien Baker, who penned the album’s bio, directly: “What I can say about TORRES is I think the music comes from a convicted place. […] And I think it’s just incredibly good music to listen to.” Further words from Baker pulled from the bio are below.
The modes of being are different: heartbroken, broke, furious (right- and unrighteously), awestruck by love, compelled by desire. Sometimes resigned to death, sometimes fascinated by and reverent of the future. Sometimes viscerally present, other times suspended in heady awareness, poised on a fulcrum of observation and participation in the phenomenon that aliveness is… The tools are the same: instruments that growl and shriek and moan, a lyrical voice shouting, swooning, chuckling, snarling as the moment commands. TORRES’ music-making is conducted in a melodic vocabulary unique to itself — methods, equipment, circumstances shifting around the impulse to affirm the self within the world, to make art that bears all these little artifacts of the divine and of the real and show it to people and know it is valuable.
You can hear it in the songs, someone reaching, leaning over the boundary between known and not, probing the almighty. If TORRES’ music gets weird, gets brainy, gets funny, gets defiant, provokes, deliberately scandalizes, employs the crass to undermine the austere, courts lofty philosophical truth — it’s all done with the conviction of an artist with the (essential) belief in the worth of their task.
Next year, TORRES will embark on a North American/ EU/ UK tour, with stops spanning Cleveland, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and more, including select festival performances. A full list of dates is below, and tickets are on sale to the public beginning this Friday, October 6th, at 10am local time.

lyra messier is het soloproject van de 23-jarige Lyra uit het Gentse. Al sinds haar veertiende schrijft en produceert ze haar eigen muziek. Vandaag verschijnt “Sevastopol”, de eerste single van haar titelloze vijfde album dat op 10 november verschijnt.
Lyra begon met klassieke pianolessen op haar zevende, maar luisterde in haar tienerjaren vooral naar een hoop rock en elektronische muziek. Haar eigen werk verweeft deze stijlen moeiteloos met elkaar, al is het op “Sevastopol” vooral de eerste die opvalt.
Het is haar eerste nummer waarop ze zelf zingt, geschreven in 2018. Jo Griffin van de Britse band 31hours is op gitaar te horen. De tekst is een aanklacht tegen het Russische regime. Tijdens het schrijven beperkte de oorlog in Oekraïne zich nog tot het oosten en de Krim, maar het nummer is de voorbije twee jaar natuurlijk een stuk relevanter geworden.
De volledige langspeler verschijnt op 10 november en bevat nog acht andere nummers, die gaan van neo-klassieke piano over progressieve rock naar house en trance. Soms Engelstalig, soms Nederlandstalig, soms instrumentaal, maar altijd authentiek.

Even voorstellen – Bayline - I Choose Love
Het debuutalbum van Bayline staat vol met catchy, melodieuze, rauwe punk- en rocktracks met een vleugje emo. Van snellere punk tot rustigere rock, alles wordt gebracht met dezelfde oprechte energie.
De nummers op het album zijn een reflectie op de (huidige) staat van de maatschappij. Daarnaast zijn er ook meer persoonlijke nummers die gaan over angst, depressie en het kiezen van je eigen pad. Het overkoepelende thema is LOVE. Je kan jezelf verliezen in alle negativiteit en negatieve gedachten, maar I CHOOSE LOVE.
De afgelopen maanden heeft Bayline verschillende singles en video’s uitgebracht van nummers die op het album komen. De nummers zijn goed ontvangen en gedraaid op radiostations zoals KINK. Daar wordt Bayline beschreven als ’…punk rock met een vies emo-randje, …ik houd ervan’.
Suburban Records brengt de LP en CD uit in de BeNeLux en Flight13 in Duitsland. Het album komt uit op 24 november.

Belau is one of the most promising electronica newcomers around the European music scene. In five years, they had more than 200 live performances in 25 countries. The debut LP, “The Odyssey” won the Hungarian Grammy in best electronic music album category. Their long-awaited sophomore album, titled Colourwave, made their name on international level, now they release ‘Faraway’ featuring Hien, which will be the part of their new album ‘Apriori’ out on 27th of October.
“Take You to The Sea” – claims about their compositions. Belau (Peter Kedves and Krisztian Buzas) is a band who tries to provide shelter for the modern human through their music - representing the path to self-awareness through the depth of the individual - by making modern and elegant electronic beats with longing lyrics driven for the solace of the mind. The duo had many international successes. In meer dan 1000 verenigingen in Vlaanderen wordt het theater met passie beoefend. Een jury selecteert de meest belangwekkende voorstellingen van het voorbije seizoen. OPENDOEK, de Vlaamse organisatie voor theater in de vrije tijd, kiest elk jaar een andere stad uit om die voorstellingen te tonen. Van 27 oktober t.e.m. 1 november landt het festival in Brugge. Brugse theaterverenigingen in al hun diversiteit worden in deze editie extra in de kijker gezet. Allerlei randevenementen bieden voor de sector van het vrijetijdstheater inspiratie, ruimte voor ontmoeting en creativiteit.

De bandleden van de portables, de licht legendarische band met Brugse roots, kondigen hun afscheid aan na een decennialange carrière. Op vrijdag 10 november spelen ze hun laatste concert in Daverlo. Voor die gelegenheid bereidt de portables een fantastische liveshow voor én nodigt de band een aantal bevriende artiesten uit om het feest compleet te maken. Hellvete, Star Club West en Fake Indians serveren een muzikale festivalavond voordat de portables de laatste keer het podium bestijgen.

Eigen Kweek is een project voor regionale talentontwikkeling van nieuwe podiumkunstenaars én aspirant zakelijk leiders en lanceerde een oproep voor seizoen 24-25. Het traject vindt plaats in 4 provincies: Vlaams-Brabant, Antwerpen, West-Vlaanderen en Oost-Vlaanderen. In elke provincie wordt één nieuwe maker (of collectief of gezelschap) gematcht met één aspirant zakelijk leider. Zij krijgen de unieke kans om samen een eigen productie te realiseren. En dit met voldoende tijd, ruimte, ondersteuning en een budget voor een kleine podiumkunstcreatie.

Na de eerste digitale release “Desillusion”, waar EmRa de vocals voor zijn rekening nam, laat ik twee nieuwe kindjes op de wereld los: “A Bad Habit” en “The Swamp”. Het eerste nummer bevat zang van Nour en het tweede is een instrumentale compositie.
Nour zingt samen met EmRa in The Other Intern, maar ze leent ook regelmatig haar stem voor projecten die zich situeren in de underground electro, minimal, EDM en dergelijke meer.
“A Bad Habit” gaat over het maken van een foute beslissing. Het nummer wordt gedomineerd door de ‘grand piano’- partij waarrond de rest van het nummer is opgebouwd. Een nummer met veel emotie en een heavy tekst. Ik had het geluk dat Nour heel goed aanvoelde waar ik naartoe wilde met de song. De bijhorende videoclip onderstreept alles mooi.

“The Swamp” is een dromerige song. Het bezit geen tekst of zang en het zou zomaar over van alles kunnen gaan: een mooie zomerdag, een fietstocht, een picknick, een gemoedelijke trip… maar eigenlijk gaat het nummer, in de bijhorende videoclip, over de frictie tussen de natuur en de mens.

IVY FALLS 'NOT COOL'
'Not Cool' is het eerste nummer dat we mogen onthullen van het debuutalbum van Ivy Falls, verwacht in het voorjaar van '24. Ivy Falls is het soloproject van singer-songwriter Fien Deman, na samenwerkingen met artiesten als I Will, I Swear, Illuminine en Satin Jackets in de afgelopen jaren.
De singer-songwriter leerde zichzelf gitaar te spelen en 'Not Cool' is één van de eerste nummers die op gitaar heeft geschreven. De oorsprong van dit nummer en eigenlijk het hele album gaat terug naar een cruciaal moment - de nasleep van een vloedgolf die alle vertrouwde ankers in haar leven wegspoelde.
Terwijl Fien op zoek was naar nieuwe wegen en een nieuw en leeg huis probeerde te vullen, schreef ze tientallen songs. Not Cool gaat over grenzen stellen en keuzes maken die je leven en relaties overhoop gooien, en uiteindelijk over ieders zoektocht naar geluk. Het is een oproep om je eigen weg te kiezen, zelfs als dat leidt tot eenzaamheid. Not Cool is een indie pop-folk song met diepgang en maturiteit, vol melancholie, en luidt een nieuw hoofdstuk in het persoonlijke en artistieke leven van Ivy Falls in, terwijl ze haar oorspronkelijke muzikale liefde herontdekt. Fien liet zich inspireren door artiesten zoals Julia Jacklin, Feist, Nilüfer Yanya, Amen Dunes en Sufjan Stevens.
Ze vond haar perfecte muzikale match in Bram Vanparys (The Bony King of Nowhere). Samen hebben ze het album geproduced, geschreven en gitaar- en pianopartijen ingespeeld. De liedjes op Ivy Falls’ debuut namen ze het afgelopen jaar op in hun home studio.
In de zomer van 2023 trok Fien samen met bevriende filmmakers Jaan Stevens en Michiel Venmans naar het landelijke Famechon in Frankrijk om er de video van 'Not Cool' te schieten. Om een zo eerlijk mogelijke video te maken gingen ze op zoek naar de elementen die Fien inspireerden tijdens het schrijven van het album. Weg van de stad, zonder concreet plan, maakten de drie een visuele reis waarin de thema's opgroeien, de natuur, complexe relaties en het terugvinden van je innerlijke kind heel mooi met elkaar verweven werden. Net zoals het nummer zelf een herontdekking is van haar muzikale eerste liefdes en Ivy Falls toont als singer-songwriter, is de video een letterlijke en figuurlijke wandeling door de ontwikkelingen die ze doormaakte de afgelopen 3 jaar, zowel muzikaal als persoonlijk. De tijdloze schoonheid van de natuur dien als metafoor voor het verstrijken van de tijd en het onomkeerbare proces van volwassen worden.
