Het Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) viert van 8 tot 20 april 2025 het veelzijdige ‘feest van de genrefilm’ op de Brusselse Heizel. Deze 43ste editie focust met het thema Future Frights op een dystopische toekomst. Zowel doorwinterde fans als leken kunnen zich verheugen op grote namen zoals Danny Boyle, Paco Plaza en Christophe Gans, naast een erg uiteenlopende programmatie met onder meer blockbusters als Opus en Twilight of the Warriors: Walled in, Drop en The Ugly Stepsister. Dit jaar is er bovendien ook een opmerkelijke nieuwigheid: The Silent Screenings.

Voor de fans van science-fiction, thriller, fantastische films en alles daartussen is het BIFFF al lang geen geheim meer. Het Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival is op (inter)nationaal vlak al meerdere decennia de referentie in de genrefilmwereld. Sinds haar ontstaan in 1983 gingen er al zo’n kleine 2 miljoen filmtickets over de toonbank, met jaarlijks rond de 55.000 trouwe bezoekers. Naast een filmfestival is het BIFFF vooral een beleving binnen en buiten de filmzaal. Animaties, make up-, kunst- en bodypaintwedstrijden, fantastische tentoonstellingen, de ZomBIFFF’ Run, het Vampierenbal, de Rafting op het publiek, … alle facetten van de fantastiek komen aan bod op het festival.

Durand Jones & The Indications — the trio of Durand Jones, Aaron Frazer, and Blake Rhein — return today with the announcement of their new album, Flowers (out 27th June on Dead Oceans), and the release of its lead single/video, “Been So Long.” For their fourth album and first since 2021’s “disco and funk infused” (Billboard) Private Space, The Indications leaned into a particular desire to return to their roots in a Bloomington basement, a space where they first found camaraderie in gritty funk and Southern soul that would inspire their self-titled debut. Just as they did on that 2016 release, The Indications prioritized close-knit collaboration while creating Flowers. Much of the self-produced album was written together at Rhein's Chicago home studio, and many tracks are based on one-take demos — proof that vibes were particularly high, each member pulling from their refined tool kits with ease.
Reflecting a strong sense of the band’s maturation and conviction, the 11 songs that make up Flowers are grown and sexy, fit for cruising, and delight in the softer side of soul and disco. "All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before," says Jones. "We are all in our 30s, have all been through ups and downs in our personal lives and professional lives, and flowers are a sign of maturity, growth, spring, productivity." Frazer adds: "We took the spirit of play that started the project, and added in the wisdom and lessons we've acquired through the years."
For Jones personally, Flowers is the result of significant personal transformation. "I had spent the last year and a half laying everything out that I felt insecure about — I felt insecure about my sexuality, growing up poor; about a myriad of things. I laid all of that out on the table and it made me such a stronger person, to the point that I got back to the Indications and I was way more sure of myself."
On lead single “Been So Long”, this renewed sense of camaraderie is front and center, as the Indications sing in unison: “It’s been so long/since we’ve been gone/it’s good to be back together.” It’s a song that contemplates the universal experience of returning to your hometown, alongside their experience of creating Flowers– a personal homecoming. Of the track, The Indications say: “‘Been So Long’ felt like a natural choice for the first single from the new album. Although it hasn’t been that long since we’ve been apart, it is the longest stretch the band hasn’t toured or released music in nearly a decade. The feeling of returning to your hometown is not unlike getting back together with your band mates after a spell. Some things have changed nearly beyond recognition, while others are exactly as you always remembered. In the video we are joined by Chicago musicians Wyatt Waddell and Michael Damani, two very gifted singers who lent their voices on the recording of ‘Been So Long’.”
Since forming in 2012, the road has taken The Indications from those origins at Indiana University, Bloomington to the global stage, selling out shows across Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand to the West Coast— where DJI has a strong following among the lowrider and vintage soul enthusiasts. Next week, they will support Lenny Kravitz in arenas around Europe on his Blue Electric Light tour.
It has also seen the release of their three thoughtful, harmonic albums: Durand Jones & The Indications (2016), American Love Call (2019) and Private Space (2021). Pulling sonically and spiritually from each of the group's previous releases and solo work, Flowers is the next stage of The Indications’ inspired soulful discography. They’re not only accepting their flowers, but indulging in their sweet and sexy fragrance.
"When I think of Flowers, I think of this sense of naturalness. There's a lot of courage in showing the human side of making music," adds Rhein. "We spent the most energy playing to each other’s strengths and learning how to support each other. Being able to make art from an intuitive level takes a lot of confidence, not second guessing yourself, not asking if it's going to be well received."
"We're so blessed to have such a wide range of influence and musical minds that have such a good grip on the things that they love, and the ability to synthesize those influences and bring them to a group setting,” states Frazer. “So we'll continue to do what we're doing for many years to come."

Deerhoof today announced their new album Noble and Godlike in Ruin will be released April 25th (Joyful Noise Recordings), and took an unexpected turn by exclusively premiering its lead single “Immigrant Songs” via Craigslist–two days ahead of the song’s official release at streaming services. In a series of Craigslist ‘Services’ posts advertising themselves for hire in their local communities, including Brooklyn, Tucson, Portland, and Minneapolis, the band shared a message directing readers how to hear their epic album closer alongside photos of the album artwork (front/back, insert, center label). This unconventional premiere serves to spotlight a tech platform that isn't blatantly supporting fascism.
“Immigrant Songs” is an odyssey like only Deerhoof could dream up: beginning with an innocuous lyric about showing up to a party, set to a delicate ostinato for bells and sparkling guitar; and ending with a noise-rock blowout that sounds like reality coming apart at the seams. The band of Satomi Matsuzaki, Ed Rodriguez, John Dieterich, and Greg Saunier get from one extreme to the other through expertly managed tension and inventive juxtaposition, weaving four-on-the-floor beats through bossa nova guitar chords, following passages of tightly coiled rhythm with wide-open vistas. All the while, the narrative about the party gradually reveals the allegory hinted at in the title. (Which, given Deerhoof’s encyclopedic relationship to music history, is probably also a Led Zeppelin reference.) “Kindness is all I needed from you,” Matsuzaki sings to an unwelcoming host, “but you think we’re in your house.” Not long after, the song detonates, its tightly wound art-pop giving way to several minutes of howling noise.
“This song is kind of a sequel to Satomi describing her immigration tribulations in ‘Exit Only.’ It's what it feels like to see the discourse around immigration get so twisted. The most criminal and barbaric 'migrant horde' to invade America was from Europe. There's a sector of racialized, underpaid immigrants, doing labor white people won't, who are getting deported and dehumanized in record numbers in recent years. They are really the glue keeping our society from collapsing. It's these heroic fugitives, not millionaire politicians holding little signs with one hand while sending out fundraising emails about 'strengthening our borders' with the other, who actually have a thing or two to teach us all about how to resist and survive.” - Greg from Deerhoof
Matching the whimsical to the revolutionary, the beautiful to the horrific, Noble and Godlike in Ruin provides a catharsis which liberates listeners from the inhumane world we’re forced to wrap our bamboozled, grief-stricken heads around. Their 20th album and follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2023 LP Miracle-Level was self-produced by the band and features Saul Williams on “Under Rats.”

Na bijna vijftig jaar op deze aardkloot te vertoeven blikt SJ Hoffman op deze plaat terug op allerhande relaties. Elke track vertelt het verhaal van een relatie, niet enkel liefdesrelaties maar ook vriendschappelijke en familiale.
Steven Borgerhoff* wachtte tot zijn 43ste om debuut The Long Now (2019) op de wereld los te laten als SJ Hoffman. De muziek was er al altijd maar er was een duwtje in de rug nodig om de klus geklaard te krijgen.

Met het nieuwe Redeeming Grace laat Borgerhoff de gitaar achterwege en smijt hij zich volop op de piano. Geïnspireerd door The Pretender van Jackson Brown en Leif Vollebekk wil hij een plaat maken die ook af en toe een uitstapje maakt naar jazz en soul. Met jazz-muzikanten aan zijn zijde geeft hij vorm aan zijn sterke songmateriaal dat deze keer wederom geproduceerd wordt door Sam Pieter Janssens. De songs liggen vast wanneer hij de studio induikt maar hij daagt de muzikanten uit om het avontuur en de improvisatie op te zoeken zodat de songs nog meer kleur en diepgang krijgen. Na bijna vijftig jaar op deze aardkloot te vertoeven blikt hij op deze plaat terug op allerhande relaties. Elke track vertelt het verhaal van een relatie, niet enkel liefdesrelaties maar ook vriendschappelijke en familiale.
Ain't So Hard to Tell is "Classic"Redeeming Grace -opnameproces: basis recording met drums en piano - nadiengitaar, bas, strings en percussie aan toegevoegd. Met de mooie, gelayerdebacking vocals van Annelies Tanghe.
Same Old Storm - de eerst verschenen track die de stilte sinds 2021 doorbrak - is zo'n nummer: lekker lang en met mooie improvs! en tevens de afsluiter van het album.
Hold Your Heart: Make-overvan één van SJ Hoffman's eerste singles (2019 - album: 'The Long Now')
Productionele insteek: wat zouden Leif Vollebekk en Jackson Browne met deze song doen? Wehebben eerst de juiste groove vastgelegd en opgenomen met drums en piano, nadien blazers en akoestische gitaar aan toegevoegd.
Little Love: Eén van de eerste opnames van dit album. Uitwerking zat meteen juist en gaf een boost aan de rest van de opnames. De track zet de toon voor de rest van deplaat. Lyrics van Steven Borgerhoff die je niet onberoerd laten.
Long Blue Light Originele versie: Leif Vollebekk, het reflecteert op kwetsbaarheid en het vinden vansteun. Een prachtige song dat leunt op piano, en perfect in combinatie met deachtergrondzang van Annelies Tanghe die de songs van Hoffman met gevoel ondersteunen. . 'Getracht om er een eigen SJ Hoffman touch aan te geven: meeslepend en iets minder folk, iets meer pop dan het origineel. Met een prachtig blazers arrangement van 'The Horns'.'

Mini Bio: Steven Borgerhoff wachtte tot zijn 43ste om debuut The Long Now (2019) op de wereld los te laten. De muziek was er al altijd maar er was een duwtje in de rug nodig om de klus geklaard te krijgen. Dat kwam er van Luuk Cox (Stromae, Girls In Hawaii, Arsenal) en Mikey Rowe (MD van Noel Gallagher) die hij toevallig na een optreden van Noel Gallagher tegen het lijf liep. Het debuutalbum werd opgenomen in ICP Studios en Borgerhoff werd omringd door schoon volk: Mikey Rowe (piano), Arnout Hellofs (drum), Seb Leye (gitaar), Joe Hammill (backings) en Neeka (backings). The Long Now werd op applaus onthaald en kreeg in de betere muziekpers alleen maar lovende recensies. Eerste singel Falling kreeg een videoclip met Stefaan Degand in de hoofdrol.
Nog geen jaar later wordt het tweede album Waves Holding Time - deze keer geproducet door Sam Pieter Janssens - gedropt. Het betreft een ietwat delicatere plaat die weliswaar aanknoopt bij het geluid van de voorganger maar vooral geprezen wordt voor de poppareltjes gedrenkt in weemoed en nostalgie. De recensies (HUMO, De Standaard, OOR...) delen - alsof ze het hadden afgesproken - allemaal vier sterren uit. Een pareltje van tijdloze schoonheid klinkt het her en der. Ook op Waves Holding Time kan SJ Hoffman rekenen op samenwerkingen met getalenteerde mensen als daar zijn: Leonie Gysel (Arsenal), Pieter Van Dessel (Marble Sounds) en Pascal Deweze.
Even voorstellen – Mistbank – Alarm! Alarm!
De wereld staat onder spanning. Oorlogen, klimaatproblemen, machtsdrang, sociale ongelijkheid. In deze onrustige tijden brengt Mistbank een geluid dat binnenkomt, resoneert en niet meer loslaat.
Een krachtige mix van jazz, hiphop en rock versmelt met poëtische Nederlandstalige teksten. In hun eerste single Alarm! Alarm! stuwen een rollende saxofoon, een jagende contrabas, een schreeuwende viool en een percussionist die overal muziek in vindt de song voort. Een freestylende pianist en een drummachine uit de jaren negentig voegen een eigenzinnig en gelaagd karakter toe. Het resultaat is een sfeer die tegelijk rauw en meeslepend is, een muzikale nevel die de tijdsgeest perfect weerspiegelt.

Tamino begon 2025 met een droomstart. Afgelopen zaterdag betoverde hij Bozar met een magische Intimate Release Show, maar dat was nog maar het begin. Binnen enkele dagen brengt een van de meest geliefde Belgische artiesten op het internationale toneel zijn derde album uit. En er is meer: vandaag kondigt hij een nieuw concert aan in Vorst Nationaal op vrijdag 31 oktober
Sinds zijn debuutalbum "Amir" (2019) sleurt Tamino ons mee in een tijdloos, meeslepend universum vol warmte en emotie. Hij combineert dromerige en krachtige ritmes met oosterse snaarinstrumenten en piano, allemaal rond zijn diepe, indrukwekkende stem. Die unieke stijl slaat aan: zijn eerste twee albums werden al bijna een half miljard keer gestreamd. De Antwerpenaar veroverde de wereld met uitverkochte shows en werkte samen met topartiesten als Angèle, Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) en David Byrne. Zijn derde album, "Every Dawn's a Mountain", verschijnt nu vrijdag en luidt een nieuw hoofdstuk in. Dit keer koos Tamino voor een meer conceptuele aanpak bij het schrijven van zijn nummers.
