IVY FALLS 'NOT COOL'
'Not Cool' is het eerste nummer dat we mogen onthullen van het debuutalbum van Ivy Falls, verwacht in het voorjaar van '24. Ivy Falls is het soloproject van singer-songwriter Fien Deman, na samenwerkingen met artiesten als I Will, I Swear, Illuminine en Satin Jackets in de afgelopen jaren.
De singer-songwriter leerde zichzelf gitaar te spelen en 'Not Cool' is één van de eerste nummers die op gitaar heeft geschreven. De oorsprong van dit nummer en eigenlijk het hele album gaat terug naar een cruciaal moment - de nasleep van een vloedgolf die alle vertrouwde ankers in haar leven wegspoelde.
Terwijl Fien op zoek was naar nieuwe wegen en een nieuw en leeg huis probeerde te vullen, schreef ze tientallen songs. Not Cool gaat over grenzen stellen en keuzes maken die je leven en relaties overhoop gooien, en uiteindelijk over ieders zoektocht naar geluk. Het is een oproep om je eigen weg te kiezen, zelfs als dat leidt tot eenzaamheid. Not Cool is een indie pop-folk song met diepgang en maturiteit, vol melancholie, en luidt een nieuw hoofdstuk in het persoonlijke en artistieke leven van Ivy Falls in, terwijl ze haar oorspronkelijke muzikale liefde herontdekt. Fien liet zich inspireren door artiesten zoals Julia Jacklin, Feist, Nilüfer Yanya, Amen Dunes en Sufjan Stevens.
Ze vond haar perfecte muzikale match in Bram Vanparys (The Bony King of Nowhere). Samen hebben ze het album geproduced, geschreven en gitaar- en pianopartijen ingespeeld. De liedjes op Ivy Falls’ debuut namen ze het afgelopen jaar op in hun home studio.
In de zomer van 2023 trok Fien samen met bevriende filmmakers Jaan Stevens en Michiel Venmans naar het landelijke Famechon in Frankrijk om er de video van 'Not Cool' te schieten. Om een zo eerlijk mogelijke video te maken gingen ze op zoek naar de elementen die Fien inspireerden tijdens het schrijven van het album. Weg van de stad, zonder concreet plan, maakten de drie een visuele reis waarin de thema's opgroeien, de natuur, complexe relaties en het terugvinden van je innerlijke kind heel mooi met elkaar verweven werden. Net zoals het nummer zelf een herontdekking is van haar muzikale eerste liefdes en Ivy Falls toont als singer-songwriter, is de video een letterlijke en figuurlijke wandeling door de ontwikkelingen die ze doormaakte de afgelopen 3 jaar, zowel muzikaal als persoonlijk. De tijdloze schoonheid van de natuur dien als metafoor voor het verstrijken van de tijd en het onomkeerbare proces van volwassen worden.

The 10th anniversary celebration of Daft Punk’s album Random Access Memories continues with Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition).
Following the release of the critically acclaimed Random Access Memories 10th Anniversary Edition earlier this year, this new iteration of the GRAMMY-award winning Album of the Year strips away all drum and percussive elements from the album. Doing so brings out a timeless quality to the album, giving listeners the ability to dive deeper into the layers of each track.
The experience of the album without drums creates an entirely new experience, and tracks are transformed. “Within (Drumless Edition)” is the first track off the album available today. Stripped of percussion, this new version highlights the track’s timeless structure, and Chilly Gonzales’s piano gains an even more pensive, self-reflective quality.
As part of the 10 year anniversary of Random Access Memories, Daft Punk unveiled “Memory Tapes,” a look back at the album’s creation by collaborators including Julian Casablancas, Chilly Gonzales, DJ Falcon and Todd Edwards. Episodes with Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Paul Williams and Chris Caswell are forthcoming. Interviews for Memory Tapes were conducted at Henson Studios in Los Angeles and Gang Studios in Paris, in spaces where much of Random Access Memories was recorded, and where the collaborators worked. Each episode includes a new interview as well as archival footage and never before seen studio footage of Daft Punk as they crafted what became their final album.
Random Access Memories 10th Anniversary Edition debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 album chart earlier this year to critical acclaim. floating between psychedelic folk and melancholy pop
With his surprising first solo album Edmund November, Edmund Lauret (Nordmann, Kosmo Sound, The Milk Factory) returns to his British roots and the music he grew up with. He also debuts as a singer. “I had been making solo songs for a while, but that process was accelerated during the corona period,” he says. “I think there has always been a singer inside of me and now it has come out.”
It is striking that while we know him as a jazz guitarist, Edmund November is clearly influenced by music from the sixties and seventies, the songs he grew up with. As a young guitarist, Edmund was enthralled by Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, early Pink Floyd, and The Beatles.
His influences showed him how to master the balance between harmony and melody. This is how Lauret has always worked with his bands for the past fifteen years; in that sense, his solo work is no different.
Edmund November floats between psychedelic folk and melancholy pop. The songs were recorded live with minimal editing, which only adds to the liveliness of the record. Ten songs take the listener on a dreamy musical trip that showcases Edmund's singer-songwriter qualities.The idyllic setting of the southern English countryside where Edmund and his band recorded the album undoubtedly had an impact on the organic, vintage British character of the music. The songs are open and expansive like the landscapes around the recording studio. The titles and lyrics also have an elusive character; Lauret prefers to leave them to the imagination of the listener.

Virgin music news - Steven Wilson deelt zevende studioalbum THE HARMONY CODEX
Steven Wilson wordt weleens omschreven als "the most succesful British artist you've never heard of". Hij is producer, geluidstechnicus en bezweerder van vele instrumenten. Wilson werd voornamelijk bekend met zijn band Porcupine Tree, momenteel vliegt hij solo. Als producer werkte hij al samen met bands als Opeth, King Crimson, Pendulum, Jethro Tull, XTC, Yes, Tears for Fears, Roxy Music, ...
De Brit ziet eruit alsof hij het jeugdelixer gevonden heeft, maar blaast binnenkort zesenvijftig kaarsen uit en heeft al een indrukwekkende carrière achter zich. Op dertig jaar werd hij vier keer genomineerd voor een GRAMMY - twee keer met Porcupine Tree, één keer met Storm Corrosion en één keer als soloartiest. Desondanks bleef zijn muziek grotendeels uit de mainstream. Wilsons werk omvat verschillende genres, van progressieve rock naar elektronische muziek tot jazz.
Nu verschijnt Steven Wilsons zevende album THE HARMONY CODEX. Op THC navigeert Wilson de luisteraar door een verzameling aan herinneringen. Oude studiopartners als Ninet Tayeb, Craig Blundell en Adam Holzman werkten mee aan de plaat. Hij ging ook nieuwe samenwerkingen aan, onder andere met Jack Dangers van Meat Beat Manifesto en Sam Fogarino van Interpol.
THE HARMONY CODEX knipoogt naar Wilsons eerder werk maar is bovenal een fascinerende trip die compleet buiten het begrip genre valt. Als audiofiel creëerde hij het album met spatial audio in zijn achterhoofd, maar je kan dit meesterstuk perfect in stereo en met een open geest beluisteren.

Former film journalist Jan Temmerman reached out to us one day, offering a treasure trove of vintage soundtrack albums discovered in his attic," recounts Robin Broos. "With 650 long players, mostly unheard of titles, we embarked on an extraordinary quest—to listen to every single one of them, totaling a staggering 29,250 minutes. It was like watching the original Star Wars trilogy 78 times!"
What started as a quest soon evolved into an intriguing investigation fueled by curiosity. Along the way, Broos and Peeters unearthed dozens of treasures, delved into the backgrounds of obscure composers and musicians, and witnessed an array of enigmatic films. "We encountered an abundance of (un)necessary nudity that we never could have imagined existed," Tom Peeters laughs. The outcome of their explorations is "The Belgian Soundtrack," a meticulously curated collection of funky, melodic, and uplifting tracks, each crafted exclusively for the silver screen and boasting an unexpected Belgian connection.

Virgin music news - Multi-platina band LANY brengt langverwacht album ‘a beautiful blur’ uit
De populaire, onvoorspelbare en onmiskenbare band LANY brengt vandaag het album a beautiful blur uit. Dit is alweer de vijfde plaat van de band. Afgelopen maand bracht LANY de hitsingle XXL uit, wat al snel miljoenen streams opleverde.
Één van de nieuwe nummers op het album is Out Of My League. Een sfeervolle ballad die doet terugdenken aan de jaren '80. De met rock doordrenkte drums en elektrische gitaren in combinatie met Paul's stem brengen het nummer tot een episch hoogtepunt.
Naast de succesvolle hits staat de Amerikaanse poprockband bekend om betoverende liveshows. Na de glansrijke tour door Azië begint LANY op 29 oktober aan de eerste show van de 'a beautiful blur World Tour'.
Susanna presenteert ‘Baudelaire & Orchestra’ - Een muzikaal meesterwerk met KORK Orkest
De Noorse singer-songwriter Susanna heeft een fascinatie voor de poëzie en persoonlijkheid van Charles Baudelaire. Op haar nieuwe album ‘Baudelaire & Orchestra’ brengt ze haar unieke interpretaties van de klassieke teksten van de Franse dichter/bohémien naar het formaat van een orkest. Op ‘Baudelaire & Orchestra’ wordt Susanna vergezeld door het indrukwekkende, vooruitstrevende KORK-orkest uit Oslo. Het radio-orkest van NRK (de nationale omroep van Noorwegen) staat bekend om zijn progressieve benadering, diversiteit en bereidheid om uitdagende en eigentijdse muziek van allerlei soorten aan te pakken. De muziek is gearrangeerd door Jarle G. Storløkken, met bijdragen van de innovatieve componist Jan Martin Smørdal, die in 2022 de Nordheim Prijs heeft gewonnen. Christian Eggen, één van de topdirigenten van Noorwegen, leidt het orkest, terwijl de productie en mastering zijn verzorgd door de Noorse producer Deathprod.
Susanna's intense connectie met de poëzie van Baudelaire heeft tot nu toe geleid tot twee albums en een EP, en een reeks enthousiast ontvangen concerten. Het begon allemaal met ‘Baudelaire and Piano’ (2020), een intieme collectie van 10 nummers waarbij Susanna zichzelf begeleidde op de piano. Vorig jaar kwam ‘Elevation’ uit, met nog eens 11 pareltjes van Baudelaire. Het materiaal groeide uit tot een samenwerkingsproject met Stina Stjern en Delphine Dora, waarbij gebruik werd gemaakt van tape, gesproken woord en zang.
Susanna zegt: “Ik wilde dit materiaal al ontwikkelen sinds het eerste Baudelaire-album. Er zit wat meer complexiteit in de harmonieën en ritmes dan je kunt horen in de kale pianoversies. Ik denk dat deze nummers nog toegankelijker zijn geworden in deze orkestrale versies, en ik hoop dat nog veel meer mensen van de muziek kunnen genieten.”
Net als Baudelaire onderzoekt Susanna's muziek de grenzen van verlangen en confronteert ze de tegelijkertijd wonderlijke en betekenisloze aard van het bestaan. Baudelaire (1821 – 1867) wordt vaak beschouwd als één van de eerste moderne dichters, wiens stadsobservaties vaak overgingen in fantasie, sensualiteit, koortsige verbeelding en griezelige horror. Susanna's selectie van teksten uit zijn meesterwerk "Les Fleurs du Mal" (vertaald door Anthony Mortimer) bestrijkt het volledige spectrum van Baudelaire's conflicterende emoties. Susanna werd betoverd door de veelgelaagde teksten, met hun 'veelkleurigheid, nuances, stemmingen en emoties', en door Baudelaire's wereldbeeld, dat vragen over religie en moraliteit met een zekere kracht en elegantie behandelt.
De Noorse kunstenaar Susanna is de vrouw achter het voormalige Susanna and the Magical Orchestra en een schepper van gedurfde, originele en betoverende muziek, in staat om werelden te creëren waarin je je kunt verliezen. Ze werkte samen met artiesten als Jenny Hval en Bonnie 'Prince' Billy en maakte daarnaast altijd interpretaties van andermans werk, van AC/DC tot Dolly Parton, van Joy Division tot Henry Purcell. Susanna heeft het vermogen om deze werken te transformeren in muziek die naast haar eigen werk past zonder uit het oog te verliezen wat het origineel - en de originele componist van het nummer - zo bijzonder maakte.
Susanna is drievoudig winnaar van de Noorse Grammy's voor eerdere releases. Superfan Bonnie Prince Billy bracht onlangs ‘Wolf of the Cosmo’ uit, een coverversie van Susanna’s album ‘Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos’ uit 2007. Ze brengt haar muziek uit op haar eigen label SusannaSonata.
