Even voorstellen - Tithonus, alternativerock-grunge-noiserock
Tithonus is een alternatieve rockband die het best kan worden omschreven als non-conformistisch, rauw en niet bang om tegen de publieke opinie in te gaan. Veel van hun nummers hebben verschillende lagen, instrumentale stukken en soundscapes die je naar binnen trekken, wegvoeren en terugbrengen. Misschien.
Een korte geschiedenis
Twee vrienden begonnen een experimentele noiseband die uiteindelijk Tithonus zou gaan heten: Ben Overlaet (gitaar & zang) en Jan Van Woensel (drums). Ze namen twee nummers op en brachten die in eigen beheer uit: Movements en I Want to Disappear into the Black Back of the Night Watch.
Daarna maakten ze een 70 minuten durende noise-compositie die werd opgenomen bij hun eerste publieke optreden: een show in een oud industrieel gebouw. Jan noemde het The Secret Session. Ze speelden in Antwerpen, Brussel, Leuven, Watou, Keulen, Berlijn, Hamburg en Oslo.
Later kwam Ben's broer Dave erbij op bas en werden ze een rocktrio, meer richting grunge en noise rock.
Na een tijdje besloot Jan de band te verlaten en Tim Jamée verving hem. In 2012 namen ze Safe op. In 2016 ging Tim weg en kwam Jan terug. Datzelfde jaar namen ze Tithonus op, gevolgd door verschillende optredens in België en Nederland. Uiteindelijk ging Jan weer weg en kende de band nog drie drummers voordat Tim er weer bij kwam. Met hem achter de drums namen ze hun nieuwste ep G R I T op.
Helaas verliet Dave prompt de band zonder enige aankondiging, waardoor Tim en Ben aan hun lot werden overgelaten. Maar ze ontdekten al snel dat ze ook zonder bas nog steeds krachtig klinken en rocken als vanouds. Tithonus lijkt terug te zijn zoals ze ooit begonnen: een tweekoppige rockband.
En zeker niet bereid om op te geven.

In the past few years, the 25-year-old Sabrina Teitelbaum (aka Blondshell) has transformed into a songwriter without fear. The loud-quiet excavations that comprise the hook-filled Blondshell don’t only stare traumas in the eye, they tear them at the root and shake them, bringing precise detail to colossal feelings. They’re clear-eyed statements of and about digging your way towards confidence, self-possession, and relief.
Teitelbaum starting teasing Blondshell in 2022, capturing the attention of music critics and fans along the way with singles Olympus, Kiss City, Veronica Mars and Sepsis which Rolling Stone listed as their #1 Pick of the Month for their “Recommends” column. Last fall Blondshell also released non-album track Cartoon Earthquake as part of the Spotify Singles series.
Born and raised in New York City, Teitelbaum moved to Los Angeles for music school in 2015. Entering USC’s Pop Program, she was swept into a context where the brooding pop legacies of Lorde and Lana Del Rey reigned. She dropped out after two years, but while there studied classic and jazz theory, and the art of harmonies, and found herself writing songs inside the world of pop studio sessions.
The biggest gift the pop machine gave her was the stark clarity of realizing that she didn’t quite belong there. Her music was increasingly too raw and intense to easily categorize, and after finishing her last full-on pop EP with producer Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Girlpool, Porches) at the start of the pandemic, she gave herself permission to write without expectation. She began penning songs just for herself, with no thought that she would release them. The process emboldened her. Subtracting self-consciousness became a catalyst for the lucid songs of Blondshell, on which her experiences all coalesce to form her truest expressions of self yet. “It was me, as a person, in my songs,” she says. When she showed a few to Rothman, he encouraged her to write an album, joining a chorus of friends saying, “This is you.”
That bracing honesty charges every note of Blondshell. With the world at a screeching halt, she recommitted to guitar and revisited the galvanic 90s alt-rock of Nirvana and Hole, absorbing their simmers and explosions, the crests and contours that made their abrasive version of pop so potent. Immersing herself into books, too—particularly the writing of Patti Smith, Rebecca Solnit, Rachel Cusk, and Clare Sestanovich—she found patience and permission. “I loved how seriously she took her own experiences,” Teitelbaum says of Solnit’s Recollections of My Nonexistence. “It helped me not trivialize the things I was going through.”
For all its complicated, soul-baring subject matter—processing post-lockdown social anxiety, her relationships with men as well as with women—Blondshell is a comfort, and its songs often contain the perfectly-calibrated humor and levity we need to survive. “There were a lot of things that I was running away from—mainly loneliness, self-esteem stuff,” Teitelbaum says.
It all left her yearning to make the kind of music that has helped her feel empowered herself—and the way there was in telling the truth. “I always want to make people feel like they have more power and control and peace because I know what it feels like to want that for myself. I know how music has helped me get there,” she says. “What I’ve realized I need to do is write realistically, and try to not bring shame into the writing. Each song gave me more confidence. I hope the songs help people in that way, too.”
To mark the release of her first album, she shared late January her single Joiner, an album highlight that exemplifies her ability to layer her wry sense of humor atop weighty topics. Like the epiphanies from a therapy session, Joiner’s lyrics coalesce with hooks and adventurous melodies that are simply a blast.
“I was listening to a lot of Britpop when I wrote this song,” Teitelbaum says.“A lot of those bands (The Verve, Pulp, Suede, Blur etc.) channeled dark subject matter, drugs, and all this dirty stuff, but with a fun acoustic guitar under it. I was listening to The Replacements, too. That’s what this song was inspired by sonically. I wanted it to feel like you’re watching HBO, where even though it’s heavy, it’s still a good time.”
Blondshell has also made a studio recording of what’s become a live favorite – a cover of The Cranberries – Disappointment! Partisan released the cover alongside a lyric video featuring live footage from a recent LA gig.

Even voorstellen - Cucamaras - Buck Rogers, nieuwe EP
EPPOSTPUNK BAND CUCAMARAS KONDIGT NIEUWE EP BUCK ROGERS TIME AAN
De Britse postpunk band Cucamaras kondigt hun nieuwe EP Buck Rogers Time aan dat op 19 mei zal verschijnen via EXAG Records. De EP werd in de Young Thugs Studios in York met producer Jonny Hooker opgenomen.
De nieuwe single Cotton Wool is nu uit.

Het viertal bestaande uit Joshua Hart (zang/gitaar), Olly Bowley (zang /gitaar), Dan McGrathand (basgitaar) en Joe Newton (drums) is al jaren een vaste waarde in de muziekscene van Nottingham, bekend om hun energieke live-optredens en pakkende nummers. Met Buck Rogers Time tilt de band hun geluid naar een hoger niveau. Nog steeds sterk geworteld in de postpunk scene, integreren ze elementen van klassieke rock, pop en alternatieve muziek, om een unieke en opwindende luisterervaring te creëren.
“Buck Rogers Time is a phrase that I believe is used in American prisons; which refers to a prison sentence so long that you’ll never get out. The theme of being stuck in purgatory, or longing for more is one that has featured quite a lot in our music, right from our early stuff.” Legt Joshua Hart uit, hij vervolgt: “The name of the EP doesn’t necessarily encapsulate pessimism though, our own attachment to the name is symbiotic with the urgency and feel of the music on the EP, and also where we’re at as a band right now. Everything from Olly’s “the time is now” lyrics in Bleachers Yard to our personal belief that we’re in the right place, at the right time, with the music on this record. So that’s why it’s called Buck Rogers Time.”
De nieuwe single Cotton Wool onthult een andere laag van het geluid van Cucamaras. De band onderzoekt inwendig hartzeer via hun meest ambitieuze, maar ook melodieuze soundscape tot nu toe. Olly Bowley zegt over het nummer: “Cotton Wool is a story of admiration, whilst feeling like you’re in someone’s shadow. There’s this clumsy individual who’s running into all sorts of problems, whilst the other is sleeping peacefully - the former isn’t ready to lose that persons influence on their life.” Bekijk de video hieronder. Vorig jaar toerde Cucamaras al door Europa met festival shows op Bruis Festival, Lokerse Feesten en Left Of The Dial en ze vielen al op bij BBC Introducing, NME's Best New Bands en Clash. In mei staan ze op The Great Escape en zullen daarna onze kant op komen voor shows:

XINK Op vrijdag 29 maart 2024 in Lotto Arena, Antwerpen
Of de vier uitverkochte shows van XINK in de Ancienne Belgique een succes waren? Dat is een understatement. Het uitroepteken mag dan wel uit hun naam verdwenen zijn, we kunnen er gerust één terugplaatsen achter ‘Wat een comeback!’. De Antwerpse band is intussen klaar voor het grotere werk en kondigt een eerste arenashow aan. Afspraak op vrijdag 29 maart 2024 in de Lotto Arena.
Even een sprong terug in de tijd. In 2003 vertegenwoordigen de Kempische broederduo's ons land op de eerste editie van het Junior Eurovisiesongfestival in Kopenhagen. X!NK eindigt op een zesde plaats, maar gaat vol ambitie verder. In de twee jaren die volgen kleuren nummers als “De Vriendschapsband” , “Laat Me Vrij” en “Denk Aan Mij” de jeugd van zowat iedere Millennial. In 2009 beslissen Jonas, Niels, Thomas en Philip elk hun eigen weg te gaan. Op uitzondering van bassist Philip Valkiers blijven ze wel muzikaal actief en doen ze waardevolle ervaringen op, zowel live als in de studio, bij verschillende Belgische acts. En plots in 2022 is daar dan XINK, zonder uitroepteken maar wel met dezelfde bandleden van weleer. Een terugkeer die niemand zag aankomen, ter gelegenheid van de 20ste verjaardag van "De Vriendschapsband". Hun comeback wordt bezegeld met hitsingle “Misschien” en vier in een mum van tijd uitverkochte AB-concerten. Het is duidelijk dat we nog lang niet het laatste gezien hebben van de broers Meukens-Valkeniers!

WEGENS GROTE VRAAG EXTRA DATUM VOOR LUDOVICO EINAUDI OP 10 JULI
De aankondiging van Ludovico Einaudi op 9 juli op Gent Jazz kon duidelijk rekenen op heel wat enthousiasme bij het publiek want de tickets vlogen de deur uit. Goed nieuws voor zij die naast een ticket grepen: er wordt een tweede festivaldag met Ludovico Einaudi aangekondigd op 10 juli om tegemoet te komen aan de grote vraag. Tickets zijn onmiddellijk verkrijgbaar.
Naast de komst van Einaudi en Arooj Aftab op 9 juli, schuift ook ESINAM mee aan die dag. Op 10 juli worden ESINAM's futuristische fluitklanken en inventieve ritmes vervangen door de enigmatische violiste Catherine Graindorge. De Brusselse werkte de afgelopen jaren samen met grootheden als Nick Cave, Warren Ellis en John Parish en componeert muziek voor dans, film en theater. Ook met haar eigen werk maakt ze indruk. In duobezetting opent ze de main stage op maandag 10 juli.

Somi’s composities - combinaties van Westerse en etnische invloeden, van elektronische en akoestische instrumenten - getuigen van een extreme gevoeligheid en hoewel ze zeker nooit academisch voelen, zit er duidelijk een groot inzicht en kennis achter. Een uur luisteren naar Somi is als op ontdekkingstocht gaan, niet enkel langs continenten maar ook doorheen de laatste 70 jaar jazzgeschiedenis!

Pinkpop 2023 - 16 t-m 18 juni 2023 - programma compleet
PROGRAMMA PINKPOP 2023 COMPLEET MET TOEVOEGING VAN DAĐI FREYR, ALTIN GÜN, DMA'S EN DERTIEN ANDERE NAMEN
Vol trots kondigen we vandaag aan dat het programma voor Pinkpop 2023 compleet is met de toevoeging van 16 nieuwe namen, waaronder Daði Freyr, Altin Gün en DMA’s. Zij voegen zich bij headliners P!NK, Robbie Williams en Red Hot Chili Peppers en andere acts zoals Queens of the Stone Age, Editors, Machine Gun Kelly, The War On Drugs, The Script, OneRepublic, The Black Keys en Niall Horan, waarvan de komst al eerder werd bevestigd. Pinkpop vindt plaats op 16, 17 en 18 juni op Megaland in Landgraaf. De complete line-up is nu te zien op onze website en de kaartverkoop is reeds gestart via Ticketmaster. De exacte podium indeling en het tijdschema worden binnenkort gepubliceerd.
Het Turks-Nederlandse Altin Gün zorgt op Pinkpop-vrijdag voor een energieke show vol psychedelische Turkse volksmuziek in een funky discomix. Niet alleen dit Amsterdamse zestal zorgt voor glorie van Nederlandse bodem: ook Bente, Goldkimono en ADF Samski staan op het Pinkpop podium. Zowel Bente als Goldkimono brengen hun in 2022 uitgekomen debuutalbum mee naar Landgraaf. Ook ADF Samski bracht afgelopen jaar een album uit: met zijn tweede album “Cartier Music” heeft hij een breed arsenaal aan muziek om het Pinkpop publiek omver te blazen. De vrijdag krijgt een Californisch tintje met de powerpop-folkgroep Trousdale, dat hun inspiratie haalt uit een breed muziekpalet. Naast de reeds bevestigde optredens van P!NK, Editors, The War on Drugs, Niall Horan, The Lumineers, Ellie Goulding en andere acts staan deze vijf namen nu op het vrijdag programma.
Op zaterdag voegen zich acht acts bij de eerder bevestigde namen als Robbie Williams, Queens of the Stone Age, The Script, The Black Keys, Hollywood Vampires en meer. De IJslandse discopopsensatie Daði Freyr maakte al ruim tien jaar muziek voordat hij in 2020 wereldwijd bekend werd met zijn deelname aan het Eurovisiesongfestival. Met zijn vrolijke tracks komt hij de zaterdag van Pinkpop naar de festivalweide. Uit de Nederlandse talentvijver staan deze dag optredens gepland van DeWolff en electrospektakel Prins S. en De Geit. Vanuit onze Zuiderburen reizen Zwangere Guy en het duo blackwave. af naar Landgraaf. Bezoekers kunnen voor garagerock, punk en psychedelica aankloppen bij SONS of bij Hot Milk voor een sterk staaltje powerpop punk. Wie graag wat indiepop met een rauw punkrandje tot zich neemt, is aan het goede adres bij het viertal van The Big Moon.
DMA’s staat niet alleen aan de vooravond van de release van hun nieuwe album “How Many Dreams”, ook een Pinkpop optreden is in het verschiet. Op zondag staat de Australische band met hun Britpop-revivalgeluid op het podium. Een andere knipoog naar het Britpop geluid komt deze dag van Orange Skyline, dat met veel gitaren en catchy songs Landgraaf inpakt. De Groningse singer-songwriter Robin Kester betovert haar publiek met haar zwoele, zachte stem en indiefolkinvloeden: ook zij is in juni te zien op het Pinkpop podium. Verder zijn er op deze dag optredens te zien van reeds bevestigde acts als Red Hot Chili Peppers, Machine Gun Kelly, OneRepublic, Goldband, Tom Odell en Warpaint.
Met de toevoeging van deze 16 namen, is het affiche voor Pinkpop 2023 compleet. Pinkpop vindt dit jaar plaats op vrijdag 16, zaterdag 17 en zondag 18 juni. Het volledige programma is in te zien op www.pinkpop.nl .
Over Pinkpop
Sinds 1990 staat Pinkpop in het Groot Guinness Book Of Records als het oudste onafgebroken georganiseerde popfestival. De eerste editie vond plaats op 18 mei 1970 in Geleen. Na zeventien edities op die locatie, verplaatste het festival zich eenmalig naar Baarlo, waarna het vanaf 1988 definitief neerstreek op evenemententerrein Megaland in Landgraaf. In 2019 vierde Pinkpop daar haar 50e verjaardag. De 52e editie van Pinkpop vindt plaats op vrijdag 16, zaterdag 17 en zondag 18 juni 2023.

POPCAAN Great Is He Tour
Op zaterdag 13 mei 2023 in La Madeleine, Brussel
Dancehall superster Popcaan komt in 2023 met zijn nieuwe album ‘Great Is He’ naar Europa! De Jamaicaanse artiest kondigt 13 shows aan op Europese en Engelse bodem. Zijn Great Is He Tour start op zaterdag 6 mei in Parijs en passeert vervolgens in Nederland, Zwitserland, Noorwegen, Duitsland en dus ook België, op zaterdag 13 mei in La Madeleine!
Popcaan verwerft in 2010 wereldfaam met de release van de track "Clarks", een samenwerking met Vybz Kartel. Zijn unieke mix van reggae- en dancehallritmes slaat in als een bom en staat al snel op de playlist van menig topclub. In no time heeft de artiest meer dan een miljard streams op zijn naam. In 2014 brengt Popcaan zijn debuutalbum "Where We Come From" uit. De plaat krijgt lovende kritieken en levert hem zijn eerste MOBO Award-nominatie op in de categorie "Best Reggae Act", die hij overigens zowel in 2015 als in 2016 weet te verzilveren.
