We openen VIDEODROOM met een knaller: het gerenommeerde saxofoonkwartet BL!NDMAN speelt live hun nieuwe soundtrack bij de cultfilm 'Donnie Darko'.

Deze duistere sci-fi parel uit 2001 groeide vrijwel volledig door mond-tot-mondreclame uit tot een van de cultfilms van de vroege jaren 2000. Regisseur Richard Kelly's debuut maakte een weinig memorabele doortocht in de bioscopen. Uitgebracht amper twee maanden na 9/11 en met promotie die een vliegtuigcrash centraal stelde, leek de film bij voorbaat gedoemd te falen. Ondanks dit moeilijke begin werd 'Donnie Darko' een echte undergroundhit.

'Donnie Darko' is het best te omschrijven als een surrealistische odyssee, vol bizarre visioenen, ingewikkelde tijdreizen en een glansrol voor een jonge Jake Gyllenhaal. Hij vertolkt op onnavolgbare wijze een getroebleerde tiener die met behulp van antidepressiva zijn hallucinaties en paranoïde gedachten probeert te beheersen. Dat wordt lastig wanneer hij wordt achtervolgd door een sinistere man in een konijnenpak die hem cryptische hints geeft over de toekomst. Spoiler alert: die toekomst is weinig geruststellend.
Hoewel het op papier misschien klinkt als een deprimerend psychologisch drama, mengt 'Donnie Darko' mysterie en duisternis met heerlijke, pikzwarte humor en visuele inventiviteit. Dit alles droeg bij aan het cultsucces van deze Lynchiaanse mindfuck.

FKP Scorpio concert - Myles Smith en Tori Kelly komen mee als voorprogramma bij Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran neemt steeds steengoede support acts mee op zijn tournee, en dat is voor de shows op 7 en 8 augustus 2025 niet anders want Myles Smith en Tori Kelly zullen het publiek in Antwerpen opwarmen.

Myles Smith en Tori Kelly vergezellen Ed Sheeran op zijn Europese tournee, en dus ook tijdens de concerten op 7 en 8 augustus 2025 in Middenvijver. De twee artiesten zullen de support acts van de Britse singer-songwriter verzorgen. Bij zijn vorige passage in Koning Boudewijnstadion in 2022 waren Maisie Peters, Dylan en Cat Burns van de partij. Zij zagen allemaal hun populariteit de hoogte ingaan dankzij de steun van Ed Sheeran, omdat ze meteen voor een groot publiek konden spelen. De Britse artiest heeft oog en oor voor (nieuw) talent, dat is duidelijk.

Myles Smith leerde zichzelf gitaar spelen op zijn negende en pende aanstekelijke hits zoals 'Stargazing', 'Home' en 'Solo' die door zijn steeds groeiende publiek woord voor woord worden meegezongen bij elke show. Zijn talent om emoties met persoonlijke verhalen te verweven past perfect bij de sound van Ed Sheeran. De twee shows van Myles Smith in Trix dit voorjaar zijn al een tijd hopeloos uitverkocht, wat een geluk dat Ed hem dus meeneemt naar Antwerpen!

Tori Kelly heeft al twee Grammy's op zak en staat dit najaar in een uitverkochte Melkweg bij onze noorderburen. De zangeres uit Californië heeft een indrukwekkende stem die ze zowel etaleert in smaakvolle covers als haar eigen nummers. Ze bracht het album 'TORI' afgelopen april uit, een plaat vol songs waar ze haar brede scala aan muzikale inspiratiebronnen laat horen: van soul over R&B en pop uit het Y2K-tijdperk. Zij neemt het openingsslot van de twee concertavonden voor haar rekening.

“Tedere Baldadigheden”, het nieuwe, lang verwachte, album van Guido Belcanto in een productie van Firmin Michiels en Guido Op De Beeck, verschijnt op 4 oktober aan het begin van een zeer uitgebreide tournee. Het is een bijzondere terugblik van een gelauwerd zanger die met weemoed en humor terugkijkt op de vele ondeugende avonturen die zijn leven tekenden. De liefde overheerst, maar ook de tragiek en tristesse laten hun sporen na bij Belcanto zelf en de gelittekende zielen van de vele kleurrijke personages die in zijn songs tot leven komen.

Dit 15de studio album vormt ongetwijfeld een nieuw hoogtepunt in het oeuvre van Belcanto, dat inmiddels ruim 300 liedjes telt, met 11 eigen nummers en 2 verrassende bewerkingen van songs van Eels en Guido’s idool Renaud. David Gray's story is unlike any other. He spent almost a decade striving to make a breakthrough, and when it happened it did so in the biggest way imaginable as White Ladder became one of the best-selling British albums of recent decades and established him as an arena-filling artist. As the years have passed, his songcraft has only been deepened by his natural ability to convey specific emotions, atmospheres or, as heard on his acclaimed 2021 album Skellig, a perception of place - all positioning him in the lineage of classic poetic singer-songwriters rather than lovestruck acoustic troubadours. While the likes of Ed Sheeran, Adele and Hozier have acknowledged his influence, David has continued to follow his own artistic path.

Now, his next chapter comes with the release of his new album Dear Life on January 17, 2025, through Gray's own independent label Laugh A Minute Records, in partnership with Secretly Distribution, which is quite possibly the deepest, strangest and loveliest set of his career to date. He launches the album alongside its lead single 'Plus & Minus' and unveils plans for a forty-one-date world tour, entitled the Past & Present Tour, which includes London's Royal Albert Hall on April 3 and Dublin's 3Arena on April 5.

Dear Life is Gray's thirteenth album. It's the result of "a starburst of songwriting … it just seemed like the gods of songwriting were being kind. The doubting voices didn't turn up." An album of emotional crisis and resolution, mortality and faith, reality and illusion, love and heartbreak, magic, science, loss and acceptance. While it is full of yearning and hope, there is an undercurrent of darkness, a tension between competing forces of hope and despair: a cavalcade of emotions in what is his most lyrically-focused collection to-date.

on The Radio 2 Breakfast Show, 'Plus & Minus' is David at his most immediately infectious. The song's piano refrain frames a duet about a fractured relationship, in which his inimitable voice trades words of disillusionment and despair with newcomer Talia Rae, whose smoky vocal simultaneously evokes equal measures of wit and sadness.

David adds, "Some unfinished songs just refuse to do the polite thing and go away. And that's certainly true of this one, which had me going round in circles for nearly 20 years to the point where it almost drove me crazy. 'Plus & Minus' is based in part on a chord sequence that was born way back in 2004, and it's no exaggeration to say that it has taken all those long, intervening years to fully resolve it. It's an unusual sort of song for me to write in that it's an out-and-out three minute pop song. In a slightly 'Babylon' style, it revolves around the same idea three times. In 'Babylon', we had Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Here we have 'You know the way desire is … You know the way the light is  … You know the way that time is.' I could see that from the word go. It's so full of hooks both lyrically and melodically that it needed a tight arrangement to really optimise their value. This took a LOT of work to get right, but we got there in the end…even if the end was 20 years on from the beginning!"

As well as changes in David's life, an array of other events informed the album's evolution. Its foundations were set in 2019, but progress was halted by Covid as well as the subsequent need to twice reschedule his huge White Ladder anniversary tour. Revisiting those songs was a reminder of the classic songcraft and electronic undercurrent that made them so memorable, yet David was also compelled to ambitiously broaden his palette, working with producer Ben de Vries to create dazzlingly rich orchestral strings, horns and woodwind arrangements to correspond with the scale of the themes. A change of location was also a factor, with much of the album recorded in a makeshift studio in Norfolk.

Gray is a songwriter's songwriter, one of those rare artists who can express themselves as fully through lyrics as through melody, a richly poetic wordsmith with vast musical flair. Dear Life is a big statement, the work of a driven man obsessively focussed on a personal artistic journey.

David adds, "A lot has happened to me. There's been change on so many levels, all the ups and downs and dramas and tragedies and joys that the slow movement through life brings. This record has been a reckoning with stuff that's been building up like static for years. But I say this with joy and a smile on my face. I know what I've done is as good as anything I could possibly do."

Almost exactly one year after their debut album on Sdban Ultra (2023), the pan-European trio KAU continues their energetic trip with a double A-side release. This release, packed with intricate synthesizer arrangements, rapid drum patterns, and deep resonant basslines, is once again focused on capturing and translating their infectious live sound to tape

Fully playing off their energetic band dynamics, the trio draws on elements of jazztronica, combined with familiar jam sounds from acts such as Yussef Dayes and corto.alto, transitioning into a groove atmosphere reminiscent of Flying Lotus. Imagine the fusion of British jazz with the innovative, vibrant 'Brussels sound'—that's where KAU sits.

Kaugummi (chewing gum) is the latest original track produced by the trio. The idea evolved by combining a 'dub' bassline with an intricate drum pattern. The melody is reminiscent of the EP's other side, "Mad Kau," as it uses similar unapologetic, richly diverse, and grooving elements. Both tracks culminate in highly energetic moments distinguished by aggressive arpeggiators and synths. Played by Lefto, Debra Richards (One Jazz) and on J-Wave (Japan), Jazz FM (UK) & Studio Brussel (BE).

Mad Kau is a present-day remake of their previous 2022 release "Mad Max." It's a true representation of how the track is played by the trio on stage, with its iconic melody as the heartbeat of the song. It evokes moments of madness both within the musicians and the listener, hence the title.

KAU is an instrumental band based in Brussels, consisting of André Breidlid (drums), Matteo Genovese (bass), and Jan Janzen (keys). Representing various European backgrounds, their coming together reflects the spirit of the city they grew up in. Taking inspiration from jazz, they create a head-bobbing atmosphere with bassy beats and catchy melodies.
KAU released their debut album The Cycle Repeats on Sdban Ultra last year and toured throughout Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, and The Netherlands. This summer the band performed at Dour Festival and Gent Jazz, this autumn they are selected for a showcase at Jazz Up! Europe in Nancy, France.

The sixth Isbells album, titled 'and the noise settles', is the first ever where Gaëtan Vandewoude hands over total control over the production to fellow band member Chantal Acda. It will be released on January 17, 2025. The magic of the recording sessions will be brought to life on stage by the core Isbells band: Gerd Van Mulders (bass, trumpet), Christophe Vandewoude (drums), Chantal Acda (keys & vocals), Gianni Marzo (guitar), and Gaëtan Vandewoude (vocals, guitar, keys).

In 2021, Gaëtan Vandewoude and his band, Isbells, decided to create their new album together from the very beginning. They worked in an intimate studio in Lommel, where they laid the foundations for new songs through jam sessions. These sessions resulted in raw demos and new ideas with promising potential. After these sessions, Gaëtan retreated to his own studio to further develop and refine these ideas.

Although the creative process with the band members was running smoothly, Gaëtan suddenly hit a creative block. The inspiration seemed to ebb away, and for the first time, he felt that something was missing. As a perfectionist artist who is used to controlling every detail himself, he found it difficult to let go. During a candid conversation with band member and best friend Chantal Acda, he shared his concerns. Then something happened that changed the dynamics of the project: Gaëtan asked her to take on the role of producer. This would mark the first time he wasn't the producer of his own album.

Acda delved deeply into the original demos but soon brought her own vision and approach into play. Her unique style and keen instincts allowed the music to evolve in an organic and authentic way. The initial ideas for further developing the music led to the use of instruments that went beyond the band's usual lineup. Piano, strings, double bass, clarinet, and alto saxophone added a warm, acoustic sound to the music. As producer, Acda brought in musicians with whom Vandewoude had not previously worked.

The tracks were recorded in the studio of Nicolas Rombauts, who also played bass guitar on the album. Producer Chantal Acda, who contributed vocals and guitar, invited several musicians to participate in the recordings, including drummer Anke Verslype, guitarist Elko Blijweert (Dead Man Ray, Rudy Trouvé Sextet), pianist Niels Verheest, violinist Patricia Vanneste (Sohnarr, ex-Balthazar), alto saxophonist Frans Van Isacker (Franco Saint De Bakker, FENNA), pianist Valgeir Sigurdsson, clarinetist Firas Al-Alwani, and trumpeter Jon Birdsong.

The result of these new collaborations is a free and spontaneous album that tells stories as they emerge in the moment, with Vandewoude and the other musicians instinctively sensing and inspiring one another. Free and adventurous, with a deep mutual understanding, this album reflects the meeting of free spirits who understand each other without words and create something unique together. It is an intimate, honest encounter, where the power of simplicity, sincerity, magic, and connection take center stage.

About the first single 'Hold You'

The song tells a poignant story of comfort and dedication, with lyrics that promise to catch you when you fall and listen when you cry. As the melody unfolds, it subtly explores the universal need for mutual love—the yearning to be held and understood. "Hold You" is a poetic tribute to the quiet strength of love and support, a reminder that even in our most vulnerable moments, we are never truly alone.
The track is more than just music—it's a gentle reassurance, a musical hug for anyone seeking connection during times of struggle. It is the first single announcing Isbells' new, sixth album, 'and the noise settles'.
