On April 12th, METZ will release Up On Gravity Hill, their first album in 4 years, on Sub Pop for the world ex-Canada and in Canada on Dine Alone. The album was engineered by Seth Manchester (Mdou Moctar, Lingua Ignota, Battles, The Body) and features guest performances from Amber Webber of Black Mountain and composer/string arranger Owen Pallett.
METZ, a band once known for blowing out eardrums with songs of joyous rage, have, over their past few records, begun exploring ways to turn abrasiveness into atmospherics, the evolution of their sound not only a reflection of the maturing of the band themselves but also of a changed world that demands nuance and compassion to comprehend and to survive. This is so on their latest effort, Up On Gravity Hill, which finds the band continuing to bend the raw power of rock music to its most delicate, intricate ends. Delivering a deep, detailed, and unyieldingly personal collection of songs that are fused together to form not only METZ’s most powerful record to date but also their most beautiful.
To spotlight this evolution, the band has shared two new contrasting singles: the stomping motorik “99,” and the charging and deeply melodic, “Entwined (Street Light Buzz)”, that offers a dreamier Swervedriver-esque guitar sheen never before utilized by the Canadian trio.
METZ frontman Alex Edkins says, “These two songs couldn't be more stylistically and thematically dissimilar. ‘Entwined (Street Light Buzz)’ is a song about the deep connection humans can foster with one another and how we carry people with us forever, even after death. ‘99’ is about the scourge of corporate greed and bottom-line thinking that runs rampant in modern society. Anything for a buck is the message being sent to younger generations.”

Ibibio Sound Machine’s new single ‘Got to Be Who U Are’ quite literally globetrots, name-checking locales across the world that would feel disparate were it not for how well-travelled the band are. Kicking off with muted stabs and a breathy vocal, the song quickly transforms into an uplifting and expansive disco track with a soaring melody that takes the listener on a joyous quest for self-love.
The band explain that ‘Got To Be Who U Are’ is “about the idea that what brings us together is stronger than what separates us. No matter where we may go, we will always carry the essence of who we are in our hearts, and yet the places and things that separate us are not as important as we may be led to believe. Be happy and proud of who or what you are. Musically, the track begins by stating its message over a traditional African mbira part and then drops into a similar vocal except now over more of an electronic dance vibe which is meant to have an uplifting tone to it to carry along the message that we may be in Europe, Africa or America, but a simple sound or thought can instantly connect us. The places mentioned in the chorus “Surulere, Isale Eko, Ikoyi, Yaba” are all areas in Lagos, Nigeria where Eno grew up. The different parts of the music are connected even though they are using totally different sounds, symbolising movement of people across the world and the fundamental connection between places and people no matter where one may be.”
‘Pull the Rope’, the new record by Ibibio Sound Machine, casts the Eno Williams and Max Grunhard-led outfit in a new light. The hope, joy, and sexiness of their music remains, but, further honing the edge of their acclaimed 2022 album ‘Electricity’, the connection they aim to foster has shifted venues, from the sunny buoyancy of a sunlit festival to a sweat-soaked, all-night dance club. The atmosphere has changed, but you’re still having the time of your life.
Williams and Grunhard attribute this shift to a matter of collaborators, recording Pull the Rope with Sheffield-based producer Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, M.I.A.) over the course of two weeks. The way the pair wrote songs changed significantly — rather than Eno penning lyrics to music generated by Max and company’s jamming, Orton started with Eno and Max writing together before adding the band. With less time in the studio and a new way of considering how they built songs, the duo found making decisions about Pull the Rope’s sound quicker and more instinctual than before.
In melding their songwriting process, Grunhard and Williams have, impossibly, pulled the trick of making Ibibio Sound Machine a tighter band than ever before, building out from their core in a way that highlights the electrifying group of musicians they play with. Rather than recording with the full band in the room, Pull the Rope was sculpted, elements added and shaped by Grunhard, Williams, and Orton along the way.
The message in their fantastic new album ‘Pull the Rope’, is hope in darkness, bliss in spite of bleakness. Once again, Ibibio Sound Machine are here to provide the soundtrack to the best night of your life, and the better world to come.

‘Midas’ marks the band’s first new music since debut album Cub, which has taken on a life of its own in the 18 months since release, with sprawling, psychedelic numbers and sharp grunge refrains alike igniting Wunderhorse’s ever-growing audience. Cub’s campaign and the months following have seen the four piece graduate from playing in basements and pubs to filling Glastonbury’s Woodsies tent and selling out Kentish Town’s O2 Forum months in advance.
Across the mammoth tour leading up to and following Cub’s release, Slater and his bandmates – guitarist Harry Fowler, drummer Jamie Staples and bassist Peter Woodin – also gradually and naturally became a fully-formed band, leaving the solo era of Wunderhorse behind.
As their crowds have grown exponentially in both scale and ardency, and Cub’s tracks have reached the status of cultural reference points within the younger contingents of their fanbase, it seems harder than ever to recall a time when frontman Jacob Slater believed that his career was over before his twenties had begun.
Having burned himself out as the teenage frontman of the much-hyped but ultimately ill-fated punk outfit Dead Pretties, Jacob retired to Cornwall to repair the damage that he had caused to himself and realign his focus on the important things in life.
It was whilst working as a surf instructor on the UK’s south western perimeter that Jacob rekindled his love of songwriting: this time spinning introspective, considered compositions which transcended his young years and went on to form the foundations of Wunderhorse.

Rampage Open Air gaat weer above and beyond om z'n naam en faam als 'biggest drum-'n-bass and dubstep festival in the universe' alle eer aan te doen. Nu de volledige line-up voor editie 2024 op 5, 6 en 7 juli in Kristalpark Lommel bekend is, kunnen we onomwonden stellen dat de organisatie, naast met hun waanzinnige faciliteiten, ook op muzikaal vlak weer meer dan de verwachtingen inlost.
Nadat ze bij de eerste drop van 60 namen al nationale en internationale kleppers als Used, VOYD, Koven, Hamdi, Imanu, Andy C, Simula, Andromedik en het legendarische RUDIM3NTAL als één van de absolute hoofdacts mochten aankondigen, wist ROA 2O24 nog een pak schoon volk te strikken om hun waanzinnige line-up van meer dan 350 acts te vervolledigen.
Zo zal de dubstep-kenner erg blij zijn met Boogie T op de affiche en ook Eprom is een unieke en langverwachte act op ROA 2024. Daarnaast nog drum-'n-bass toppers als Metrik, K Motionz, Dub FX uit Australië en A Little Sound. All time Rampage-favorite SASASAS gaat b2b met TNA. Dubstep dj's Dirtyphonics op hun beurt met Modestep en met de Nederlandse dj en producer Natte Visstick werd ook dé grote techno hype van dit moment aan de indrukwekkende line-up toegevoegd.
Blikvanger en headliner op het lijstje met nieuw toegevoegde namen is Pendulum. De dj set met de hits, intense beats en snijdende gitaren van de iconische, Australische electro/rock band staat garant voor een zwaar feestje op zondag 7 juli in Kristalpark Lommel!

Pendulum (dj set)
Pendulum werd in 2002 opgericht door Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen en Paul 'El Hornet' Harding. De band kende al snel succes en toerde na de release van hun debuutalbum 'Hold Your Colour' (2025) van hun geboorteplaats Perth (Australië) tot internationaal befaamde clubs en festivals. Nadat ze naar de UK verhuisden en de Pendulum live band vormden, nam El Hornet de teugels van de Pendulum dj sets over en heeft de afgelopen 15 jaar opgetreden op een aantal van de grootste elektronische festivals ter wereld, waaronder Liquicity, Let It Roll, Rampage, Dreambeach en EDC.
Nu de individuele bandleden elkaar afwisselen en soms als trio optreden, zijn de Pendulum dj sets een eigen leven gaan leiden, met een enorme wereldwijde aanwezigheid en genre-overspannende shows, variërend van drum-'n-bass, house, techno, tech house breaks tot hardcore.

NYC’s beloved sibling duo The Lemon Twigs announce their all new 2024 LP A Dream Is All We Know, arriving May 3rd on Captured Tracks. Following 2023’s emotionally charged Everything Harmony — which The Guardian called “totally perfect,” Questlove praised for going “full Debarge”, and The Needle Drop’s Anthony Fantano revealed was the source of his #1 most played song of the year — A Dream Is All We Know finds brothers Michael and Brian D’addario (24 and 26 years old) exploring upbeat, shimmering arrangements that live in an imaginary space they call Mersey Beach: the sonic bridge between Liverpool and Laurel Canyon.
Last week, The Lemon Twigs informally announced the record on Fallon with a high energy performance of the LP’s standalone single “My Golden Years”. Vibrating shimmering guitar and “serious Beach Boys vibes” (FLOOD), the power-pop anthem pays faithful homage while adding their signature Twig twist.

Op 5 april 2024 brengt Within Temptation hun nieuwste single ‘A Fool’s Parade' uit, een indrukwekkende samenwerking met de getalenteerde Oekraïense producer Alex Yarmak. Deze song, gekoesterd als voorbode van de langverwachte ‘Bleed Out 2024 Tour’, is een krachtige expressie van de inzet van de band om licht te blijven werpen op de voortdurende existentiële strijd die Oekraïne levert tegen de wrede invasie van Rusland.
‘A Fool’s Parade' belicht thema's zoals de veroordeling van de leugens, de schijnvertoning van Rusland met betrekking tot de oorlog en haar misdaden en intenties. Voor de opname van de bijbehorende videoclip van ‘A Fool’s Parade’ is Sharon den Adel, de frontvrouw van Within Temptation, momenteel in Kiev, Oekraïne. Daar draait zij de video in samenwerking met de bekende Oekraïense videoregisseur Indy Hait.
Met o.a. hun betrokkenheid bij initiatieven zoals stichting Ukraine Aid OPS, wil Within Temptation de aandacht blijvend vestigen op de broodnodige steun van Europa voor de strijd van Oekraïne.
Bleed Out 2024 Tour
In oktober kondigde Within Temptation een arenatour aan ter promotie van hun nieuwe album. De ‘Bleed Out 2024 Tour’ trapt af in september 2024 en brengt de band langs legendarische zalen zoals Wembley Arena in Londen (VK), Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona (ES) en Lotto Arena in Antwerpen (BE). De band start de tour met shows in 013 in Tilburg en De Oosterpoort in Groningen, en sluit af in de Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam op 6 december 2024.
Voor het concert op 4 oktober in de Lotto Arena zijn nog tickets beschikbaar. De show op 5 oktober is uitverkocht.

Les Festivals de Wallonie 2024, 'Natuur', De muzikant en zijn omgeving
‘Natuur’. Dit is het thema van de 54e editie van Les Festivals de Wallonie. Van 27 juni tot 23 oktober strijken ze neer in Brussel, Namen, Stavelot, Luik en verschillende gemeenten in Luxemburg, Waals-Brabant en Henegouwen. De natuur heeft componisten door de eeuwen heen op de meest uiteenlopende manieren geïnspireerd: de arcadische landschappen en bestiaria uit de barok, de bioakoestiek van de 21e eeuw, het romantische spektakel van de overweldigende natuurelementen, de vele tijdloze pogingen tot nabootsing... Maar het thema beslaat ook de menselijke natuur en de dierlijke kant van de mens. Les Festivals de Wallonie zetten dit brede muzikale programma in de verf met niet minder dan twee (Belgische) festivalartiesten: het oude muziekensemble Vox Luminis, dat zijn 20e verjaardag viert, en Gwendoline Blondeel, een jonge sopraan met een wervelende carrière. Het programma omvat ook een groot aantal Belgische en internationale artiesten, zoals sopraan Jodie Devos, klavecinist Justin Taylor, celliste Marie Hallynck met haar zus en harpiste Sophie Hallynck, pianisten Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, Eliane Reyes, Julien Libeer en Florian Noack, violist Tobias Feldman en een hele reeks gerenommeerde ensembles en orkesten.
Het DNA van de Festivals de Wallonie
De federatie Festivals de Wallonie werd in 1971 opgericht door de vereniging van de festivals van Stavelot, Luik, Saint-Hubert, Namen en Henegouwen (het oudste festival dateert van 1957). In 2011 werd de federatie uitgebreid met het Musiq3 Festival in Brussel. In 2019 lanceerde de Franstalige klassieke radiozender een gelijknamig festival voor Waals-Brabant.

MYRKUR + JONATHAN HULTÉN
Onder de artiestennaam Myrkur timmerde Amalie Bruun de afgelopen jaren aan een eigen pad binnen de heavy muziek. De veelzijdige artieste sprokkelde drie studioalbums, twee EP’s en een theaterscore bij elkaar. Myrkur verweeft moeiteloos Deense folk roots en black metal tot een dynamische, genre doorbrekende mengelmoes.
Waar de albums M (2015) en Mareridt (2017) black metal injecteerden met emoties die afwisselend verrukt en schrijnend waren, vond Folkesange uit 2020 zijn toevlucht in de archetypische verhalen van de Scandinavische folk, waarbij oude en nieuwe liederen werden gemengd tot een album dat het individu en het universele verbindt.
Het nieuwe album Spine begint in een herkenbare epische, Scandic-stijl. Het openingsnummer ‘Bålfærd’ is Deens voor "Vikingbegrafenis" en staat symbool voor een breuk met het verleden en de komst van iets nieuws dat oprijst de vlammen. Deze metafoor verbeeldt de geboorte van haar kind en de bijhorende emoties en zorgt voor een koerswijziging in het oeuvre van Myrkur.
Spine is een betekenisvolle titel met krachtige connotaties: groei, kracht, weerbaarheid maar ook flexibiliteit en de kern van ons wezen zit vervat in de titel. Het is wat een mens overeind houdt en ons in staat stelt om weer op te bouwen. The legendary Scottish indie-pop band Camera Obscura announces Look to the East, Look to the West, their first new album in over ten years, out May 3rd on Merge Records. The group, led by guitarist & vocalist Tracyanne Campbell, have reunited with Jari Haapalainen, who produced the band’s 2006 album Let’s Get Out of This Country and 2009’s My Maudlin Career, and have crafted an album that simultaneously recalls why longtime fans have ferociously loved them for decades while also being their most sophisticated effort to date.
Lead single “Big Love” relishes in the space between country rock and prog, a pining break-up anthem featuring the soaring pedal steel of Tim Davidson. It’s a Nashville Sound heartbreaker, tackling the complexity of wanting to rekindle a bad relationship with Campbell’s uncanny ability to render the past: “It was a big love, she said / That’s why it took ten years to get her out of her head,” she begins. “‘Big Love’ is our tribute to Waylon Jennings, with a nod to Sandy Denny and prog rock band Scope,” says Campbell. “It’s a song about not looking back, having faith in the present and future.”
Look to the East, Look to the West was the most hard-fought album of Camera Obscura’s career. Following the 2015 passing of founding keyboardist and friend Carey Lander, the band went into an extended hiatus. They remained in contact, but their status was uncertain until they announced their return, having been invited to perform as part of Belle & Sebastian’s 2019 Boaty Weekender cruise festival, along with a pair of sold-out warm-up shows in Glasgow. Donna Maciocia (keys and vocals) joined founding members Kenny McKeeve (guitar and vocals), Gavin Dunbar (bass), and Lee Thomson (drums and percussion) for those shows and has since become a regular songwriting partner of Campbell’s.
Recorded in the same room where Queen wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Look to the East, Look to the West feels big, a widescreen reframing of Camera Obscura’s sound that, paradoxically, saw the band go back to basics—there are no string or brass arrangements, with more emphasis placed on piano, synthesizers, Hammond organ, and drum machines, and, perhaps most strikingly, the group have dropped the veil of reverb that characterized their previous albums. The tinges of country and soul that give Camera Obscura’s baroque take on pop music its bittersweet edge have never been more apparent—guitars shimmer into the distance, keys haunt, and Campbell’s voice searches for the heart, reflecting on love, loss, and the passage of time.
Look to the East, Look to the West is the sound of a band that has grown more confident in its sound and purpose than ever. It is Camera Obscura at their best and most evocative, an album that completely rearranges the listener’s emotional core, leaving them sad and exhilarated at the same time. De Amerikaanse band TV Girl komt op woensdag 21 augustus naar Lotto Arena in Antwerpen. De cultgroep uit California is al jaren stevig aan hun carrière aan het timmeren, en dankzij TikTok zijn ze in een serieuze stroomversnelling gekomen die hen nu naar Lotto Arena voert.
TV Girl uit het zonnige San Diego bracht tien jaar geleden de plaat ‘French Exit’ uit, die bij de underground indie lovers al heel wat positieve feedback vergaarde. Op het eerste gezicht is de groep een goedgeluimd allegaartje, maar in de teksten sijpelen heel wat scherpe humor en cynische gedachten door. Hun geluid refereert aan Franse pop uit de jaren zestig, met een liefde voor elektronische samples, luchtige gitaren, dromerige zang én hip hop. Klinkt tegelijk aanstekelijk als verwarrend? Exact waar TV Girl voor gaat.
TikTok heeft de capaciteit om bands zonder airplay toch in de hitlijst de katapulteren. Zo ook met TV Girl, wiens gekke samples geluidseffecten tegenwoordig viraal gaan op het mediaplatform. Het bracht hen afgelopen zomer al in een afgeladen Club op Pukkelpop, waar het nummer ‘Lovers Rock’ gretig door menig tienerstemmen werd meegezongen. Nu is TV Girl klaar voor het grotere werk, en zo staat de Amerikaanse groep op woensdag 21 augustus 2024 in Lotto Arena in Antwerpen met ook laatste wapenfeit ‘Grapes Upon the Vine’ onder de arm.
