Trashy dandy Edouard van Praet today unveils his new track Faux Mystère, the fifth single from his debut album Mascarades, due for release on October 4, 2024.
Faux Mystère is a typical anti-rock song. The drums remind us of Kanye, the guitars remind us of Grauzone, and the vocals pirouette from varieté française to screaming. Decidedly frustrated by his theatrics, a man proclaims loud and clear that he's just trying to lull (or drill?) his nerves and invites the listener not to attempt to unravel his false mystery.
After two eps that firmly established him in Belgium, Edouard has now announced his debut album Mascarades, a logical yet bold follow-up to his previous rock experiments (Doors in 2021, Cycles in 2022). This new chapter features predominantly French vocals and a deeper exploration of electronic sounds.
What might appear at first as a radical change of style from his early days is in fact just an additional layer, like mask that fits the shape of a face. Through his stylistic 'masquerades', Edouard seeks to bring an alternative sound of his own, unifying the different musical identities that lie at the root of his creative madness.
Masquerades are those pretensions that attempt to hide or reveal an identity. By pushing them to the limit, Edouard wants to reveal the trickery: beyond musical genres, he aspires to break down arbitrary labels and reveal his musical identity in broad daylight, naked, without unnecessary adornment. Peel back the layers to find the essential, and accept that the same person can cover several parallel identities that form a whole greater that their sum.
