SINT-NIKLAAS. Afgelopen zaterdag vond de eerste voorronde van Lawijtstrijd 2024 plaats in De Nest (Jeugdcentrum De Eglantier). Pink Mantra, Titans, Cracks en Simon Le Ma namen het tegen elkaar op. Het werd een gevarieerde voorronde in aanwezigheid van 200 kijklustige muziekfans en sympathisanten. En het ging er bij momenten zeer stevig aan toe!

Cracks en Pink Mantra, met leden uit onder meer Lokeren, Stekene en Waasmunster, wisten de jury te overtuigen om door te stoten naar de finale op zaterdag 11 mei in De Casino Concertzaal in Sint-Niklaas. In Cracks zag de jury veel potentieel gezien de jeugdige leeftijd van de bandleden die bijzonder veel kabaal veroorzaakten en De Nest tot een heuse moshpit omtoverden. Het hek ging volledig van de dam toen de energieke frontman het publiek indook tijdens hun stuivende show. Ze speelden een strakke set met catchy songs waar het enthousiasme afdroop. Pink Mantra wist te enthousiasmeren door hun samenspel, straffe backing vocals, een hoog fun(k)gehalte en de charismatische frontman die bij wijlen snedig uit de hoek kwam als Zack de la Rocha.

Cracks ging bovendien aan de haal met de publieksprijs. Hun aanwezige fans wisten maar liefst 114,7 decibels te produceren. Zij gaan alvast naar huis met tickets naar keuze voor De Casino Concertzaal.

De jury bestond naast leden van de diverse partners ook uit Isaac Roux, voormalig winnaar van o.a. De Nieuwe Lichting  en de publieksprijs van Humo’s Rock Rally.

Zaterdag 13 april om 20 uur vindt de tweede voorronde van LAWIJTSTRIJD ’24 plaats in Jeugdhuis Okapi in Lokeren waar Dammit, Ide Snake, Mellecrack en Vision het tegen elkaar zullen opnemen.

With ‘HIIT’ RONKER test the limits of standard tuned guitars. Stupendously aggressive and surprisingly filled to brim with hooks. From 80’s trash to noise, post metal and back in the scope of three minutes. Lyrically, it collects accusations against consumer society. Pointing it’s finger at the mirror, knowing well enough that everyone shares the blame. “Feast on the carcass of culture, you want it” make sure you wear a bib already.



New album “Fear Is A Funny Thing Now Smile Like A Big Boy”
The new RONKER album - for short “FIAFTNSLABB” (pronounced FIAFT’NSHLJAB) - is not only an ode to celebrating naivety, the album is deliberately kept unpolished and playful.
It’s a kind of DUPLO-metal, opting for simplicity and a broad color palette.

While RONKER’s anger was initially internal, it’s now more extraverted and outspoken.
Self-hatred has given way to the fear of growing up. Throughout the album, the band shifts the narrative and mocks the need for rat racing and conformity in beige tones.

On their debut album, the band sounds hungry, nervous, and indulges in its bipolair nature: the carelessness of post-punk and the concrete character of 90’s alternative metal both contribute equally to the bands DNA. In their concoction there are bits of hardcore, blend with noise, indie, prog and punk. No house is sacred anymore.

”FIAFTNSLABB” will be released on May 10th through Labelman.

Thou has always been a force of raw energy and unapologetic dissent, defying easy categorization and challenging listeners to confront the complexities of existence. Their forthcoming album, Umbilical, is their firmest nod to the latter - a record filled with mosh-ready riffs, heavy breakdowns and scathing vocals. The band’s aesthetic and political impulses have always been punk and like anyone embroiled in the subculture Thou have been exploring what it means to exist within and without a rigid morality. That exploration takes thematic center on Umbilical and their self-assessment is as harsh as that of the world around them.

Thou share their seething lead single and album centerpiece, “I Feel Nothing When You Cry.” Quote?
Umbilical is Thou's first full-length release of original music since their 2018 Sacred Bones debut Magus, and 2020 collaborative split with Emma Ruth Rundle, May Our Chambers By Full.

John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies announce details of forthcoming album ‘Lost Themes IV: Noir’, set for release on the 3rd of May. Along with the announcement, they share a first single from the collection, “My Name Is Death”, and accompanying video starring Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood), Staz Lindes (The Paranoyds) and Misha Lindes (SadGirl).

It’s been a decade since John Carpenter recorded the material that would become 'Lost Themes', his debut album of non-film music and the opening salvo in one of Hollywood’s great second acts. Those vibrant, synth-driven songs, made in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, kickstarted a musical renaissance for the pioneering composer and director. In the years since, Carpenter, Carpenter, and Davies have released close to a dozen musical projects, including a growing library of studio albums and the scores for David Gordon Green’s trilogy of Halloween reboots. With 'Lost Themes IV: Noir', they’ve struck gold again, this time mining the rich history of the film noir genre for inspiration.

“Sandy [King, John’s wife and producer] had given John a book for Christmas, of pictures from noir films, all stills from that era,” Davies says of the lightbulb moment for Lost Themes IV. “I was looking through it, and I thought, ‘I like that imagery, and what those titles make me think of. What if we loosely based it around that? What if the titles were of some of John’s favorite noir films?’”

From that seed, the music the trio was working on began to shape itself into an album. Since the first Lost Themes, John has referred to these compositions as “soundtracks for the movies in your mind.” On the fourth installment in the series, those movies are noirs.

The lead single and scene-setting album opener “My Name Is Death”, shared online today, feels like new territory for Carpenter. A driving, almost punkish bassline initiates the action, before being joined by washes of atmospheric synth, pulsing drum machine, and, at the song’s climax, a smoldering guitar solo. If the goal of the Lost Themes project is to create music that’s as cinematic as anything we can picture in our heads, “My Name Is Death” might be the group’s most successful effort yet.

The accompanying video, starring Carpenter, Carpenter and Davies alongside Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood), Staz Lindes (The Paranoyds) and Misha Lindes (SadGirl) is a miniature noir movie in itself, directed by Ambar Navarro. John Carpenter comments: "Noir is a uniquely American genre born in post-war cinema. We grew up loving Noir and were influenced by it for this new album. The video celebrates this style and our new song, My Name is Death."

Like the film genre they were influenced by, what makes the songs on Lost Themes IV “noirish” is sometimes slippery and hard to define, and not merely reducible to a collection of tropes. The scores for the great American noir pictures were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies work off a sturdy synth-and-guitar backbone. The noir quality, then, is something you understand instinctively when you hear it. “Some of the music is heavy guitar riffs, which is not in old noir films,” Davies notes. “But somehow, it’s connected in an emotional way.”

A recurring theme in talking about the Lost Themes IV process was how easy, intuitive, and natural it felt. That’s owing not just to the decade that this trio has been recording music for public consumption. Their collaboration dates all the way back to the younger Carpenter and Davies’ childhood. The two of them jammed constantly, and they cut their teeth in high-school rock bands together. (“I just listened and appreciated,” John says.) It helped that they grew up in a musical environment. Daniel’s dad is the Kinks’ Dave Davies, and he would pop by the L.A. studio – the same one the Lost Themes records are made in today – to jam, or to perform at wrap parties for John’s films. Steve Buscemi was an occasional guest drummer, and on one memorable night, Hammer Horror composer James Bernard stopped by to show the youngsters how he wrote his Dracula themes.

“We were always watching movies and talking about music,” Davies says of his and Cody’s shared childhood. “How does music work in movies? Why is a movie scary? What is that movie about? What is the underlying theme? We were always talking about that kind of stuff, all the time.”

By the time they got together to make the first Lost Themes, the Carpenters and Davies were, at least informally, decades deep into their collaboration. That album helped formalize a way of working that has largely gone unchanged 10 years later. “It’s always been pretty much the same,” John says. “We all jump in. We all have ideas. Sometimes the ideas don’t work. Sometimes they do. But it’s a democracy, in that sense. It’s a sense of, ‘Oh, I don’t like that. Let’s do it again.’ We usually police ourselves. We usually decide whether our performances are no good. And then we just do it.”

“We’re all bringing something different,” Davies adds. “I think you’ve got to let that person express that idea, and then, if it’s not working, then we all kind of know it’s not working. But it’s really rare that that even happens.”

That kind of free-flowing chemistry means Lost Themes IV: Noir runs like a well-oiled machine—the 1951 Jaguar XK120 Roadster from Kiss Me Deadly, perhaps, or the 1958 Plymouth Fury from John’s own Christine. It’s a chemistry that’s helped power one of the most productive stretches of John’s creative life, and Noir proves that it’s nowhere near done yielding brilliant results.

“This is who we are, I think,” John summarizes. “Daniel’s the adventurer. He pushes for new sounds, new directions. He tries things that I haven’t thought of. He’s a lot more daring than I am, and he enriches the whole thing. Cody’s the musician. He’s a savant at music. He understands music. We depend on him to rescue us.”

And what about John’s contribution? With characteristic understatement, he concludes: “I’m the experience. I’ve done music for movies before.”

Het Amerikaanse August Burns Red is sinds 2003 een vaste waarde binnen de metalcore. Atmosferische melodieuze riffs, met zelfreflecterende teksten die pendelen tussen hoop en gebrokenheid, gebald in agressieve uitbarstingen van gecontroleerde chaos.
Nummers als 'White Washed', 'Mariana's Trench', 'Invisible Enemy' en 'Paramount' zijn onmiskenbare anthems binnen het genre. Met het in 2023 verschenen Death Below is de band toe aan hun negende studioalbum. Ze werden gelauwerd als "Superior metalcore played with heart and avoiding the cookie-cutter clutches of the genre."
Ook op hun palmares: twee Grammy-nominaties in de categorie "Best Metal Performance" en passages op internationale hardrockfestivals zoals Rock Am Ring, Download en Aftershock.

Dying Wish is sinds hun verschijning in 2018 doorgegaan met het versterken van een onbreekbare band met het publiek. Hun full-length debuut, Fragments of a Bitter Memory (2021), leverde fanfavorieten op zoals 'Cowards Feed, Cowards Bleed,' dat 2,1 miljoen Spotify streams vergaarde. Wijdverbreid kritisch applaus … "Fragments of a Bitter Memory is an album you need in your life, with songs as catchy as they are human."
Onderweg toerden ze met iedereen, van Motionless In White, Hatebreed, The Devil Wears Prada en Counterparts tot Limp Bizkit, Terror en Kublai Khan.

Met teksten vol woede en zelfhaat mengt het viertal intense en verpletterende gitaren effectief met pakkende maar agressieve vocale ritmes. Thrown streeft ernaar om een prominente plek in te nemen met hun moderne kijk op heavy muziek met een mix van gut-punching Metalcore en woedende Hardcore.
Met hun single 'grayout' uit 2021 en recentste worp 'on the verge' tekenen ze alvast in op een veelbelovende toekomst.
Zanger Marcus Lundqvist wordt bijgestaan door Johan Liljeblad en Andreas Malm op gitaren, en drummer/producer Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta/Humanity's Last Breath). Regisseur Lucas Englund (Parkway Drive, Architects) verzorgt dan weer de video's van de band.

Na de hele wereld in vervoering te hebben gebracht met hun mega hit "Heat Waves" in 2020, kondigen Glass Animals hun comeback aan in 2024! Sinds gisteren jaagt het kwartet uit Oxford de gemoederen al de hoogte in met een nieuwe single, "Creatures In Heaven". Nu heeft de band de data van hun gloednieuwe internationale tour onthuld en België staat op het programma! Glass Animals staat je op te wachten met hun nieuwe album en al hun hits op 16 oktober in Vorst Nationaal!

In drie albums tijd heeft dit indiemuziekfenomeen, onder de meesterlijke leiding van Dave Bayley, zich gevestigd als een van de toonaangevende bands van de internationale scene. In 2014 maakten ze een zachte landing met 'Zaba', een betoverend debuutalbum met een onmiskenbare groove en een hypnotiserende mix van rauwe percussie en zweterige electro. Gelegen tussen Alt-J, Wild Beasts en Massive Attack, raakt Glass Animals de juiste snaar, maar was niet voorbereid op wat hen te wachten stond. Twee jaar later verraste de Engelse band iedereen met 'How to Be a Human Being'. Het album werd geprezen door critici, genomineerd voor de Mercury Prize en gaf de band unanieme geloofwaardigheid. Glass Animals verdiende zo hun plaats op het internationale podium. Hun geniale zet kwam in 2020 met hun derde album, 'Dreamland', waarop Dave een ongekende autobiografische dimensie aanbracht, ondersteund door krachtige synthesizer crescendo's en vooral een emblematisch nummer, "Heat Waves", dat de wereld zou veroveren. Het resultaat: meer dan twaalf miljoen verkochte platen, nominaties bij de Brit Awards en Grammy Awards en 5 weken op rij de nummer 1-positie in de Billboard 100. Een primeur voor een Britse single sinds "Wannabe" van de Spice Girls in 1995, en een paspoort naar roem. Dave, Drew, Edmund en Joe zijn nu terug met 'I Love You So F***ing Much', een vierde album met een seventies tintje, waarvan de eerste single, "Creatures In Heaven", een veelbelovend voorproefje geeft. Glass Animals staat op 16 oktober in Vorst Nationaal. Een epische live trip die je moet meegemaakt hebben!

L'Impératrice has given riveting performances at some of the biggest festivals in the U.S. including Coachella, Outside Lands and Austin City Limits, and has a quickly expanding fanbase that propelled their upcoming fall tour to sell over 30,000 tickets in less than 3 days!

The quickly rising six-piece Parisian group — who is set to return to the U.S. this month for two sold out NYC shows and return performances at Coachella — is thrilled to announce their third full length album, Pulsar, due June 7th via Microqlima. Throughout the album, they move freely and authoritatively among the sounds they love, bridging hip-hop, kosmische, and modern pop with their most unabashed embraces of French Touch and international house ever. The album is also their first to feature guest vocalists who include folk/pop singer Maggie Rogers and rapper / producer Erick the Architect, among others.

Along with the album announcement, L'Impératrice have shared new single Danza Marilù featuring Italian vocalist Fabiana Martone. The collaboration is an electrifying homage to Italo-disco fused with the band's signature sound, and was inspired by (and a rebuttal to) Serge Gainsbourg's L'Homme à tête de chou. It is an anthem for women of all ages, for freely moving on the dancefloor in spite of looks that may ensue.

The latest single from Pulsar follows Me Da Igual — three words in Spanish that roll off the tongue — a perfect title for a track of heightened sensuality. These early singles give listeners a look at what to expect throughout the the focused but far-reaching new record, influenced by the band's travels around the globe in support of 2021 album Tako Tsubo, including shows across the U.S., Mexico and Europe.

Pulsar is a record where L'Impératrice made every decision, a set of songs that truly captured the band's spirit both onstage and off. The self-produced album radiates the energy and wisdom of a band that has helmed so many dance parties around the world on the way to finding itself and its sound. Throughout, vocalist Flore Benguigui boldly sings of self-empowerment, or of shirking beauty standards, ageism, and drab normalcy. These are apt messages for these incandescent anthems of experience, of being yourself instead of anyone else's version of it.

While writing the album, L'Impératice also tried a novel approach — splitting into two teams of ever-interchanging members to explore new ideas, led by the band's founder Charles de Boisseguin. It was a way of incorporating every voice into writing like never before, pulling from idiosyncratic upbringings and enthusiasms. They then passed the tracks to Benguigui, a longtime jazz singer who would sometimes write two-dozen vocal melodies for a song just to see which one fit best. It was an arduous and exciting process and saw the band go from writing through to recording the album in about nine months. This was the sort of self-determination they'd wanted and now found.

By confronting other languages, other perspectives and other territories, and with pleasure as their only compass, Pulsar is the jubilant testament of a band with plenty to say and the skills to say it themselves.
