Tekst, uitleg, muziek kregen we anderhalf uur lang van de twee, die sterk op elkaar ingespeeld waren, informatief, verrijkend, verrassend en entertainend …


Een nieuwe aflevering dus kregen we over dit luik van de nationale popmuziek, Belpop Bonanza XXX, de opvolger van de Bonanza Superstar. De nieuwe show van de twee zit bol van majesteitsschennis, censuur, godslastering, vuilbekkerij, plagiaat …
Het is opnieuw een boeiende voorstelling waarvan ze met hun kennis en passie diep in ons rijkelijk Belgisch oeuvre hebben zitten snuisteren. We zitten nu in schandaalsferen van wat de voorbije halve eeuw heeft beroerd. Seks & drugs & rock-'n-roll & sensatie en hoe de mensen nieuwe golven van de Belgische popscene ervaarden en verteerden, allemaal in fijne weetjes en full entertainment, typisch Belpop Bonanza in beeld, geluid en humor. Het gaat over de muziekcultuur. En jawel ook over onze intrigerende volksaard.
In deze zoveelste aflevering lijkt het erop dat de twee nooit uitverteld zullen geraken.

Een greep van de verhalen …
Het begint met de platenhoezen, sexplaatjes van uit de jaren 50 -60 die eerst in Nederland hoogtij vierden en hier uitwaaiden, van Zangeres Zonder Naam, Normaal, Doe Maar naar een Eddy Wally Zwarte Lola, Tony Vorsari, Deurzakkers en ga zo maar door. Johnny Hoes en Johnny Blenco  waren hier groot ondernemers, producers, die de smartlapperij, ambiancemakers en aangebrande nummers een plaatsje boden.
We hadden ook Bad Boys. Op wereldniveau kun je niet omheen Kanye West, maar hier bij ons kon je even stilstaan bij Kaye Styles die de anthem uitwerkte van ‘Prison break’; verder een Bobby Prins of Juul kabas, schlagerkoningen en meer van dat bij uitstek . Het reilen en zeilen, allemaal in een geestige, ontspannende verteltrant.
En de twee switchen naar het politieke landschap in de 80s in ons landje, met de song over VDB’s ontvoering door Patrick Haemers, verder een knipoog naar de CCC van Pierre Carrette, wat muzikaal omlijst werd door de BSR (Brussels Sound Revolution), waarbij VDB ‘pas crevé’ was …
Een ander luik dat werd aangesneden, onze cultuur eind 70s begin 80s , met de golfbeweging van de punk en wave . Hier hadden De Brassers uit Limburg een belangvolle input in het kleine dorpje Hamont-Achel; hoe deze stille, mooie gemeente werd overwoekerd door hun muziekbeleving. Ohja deze Brassers hielden er echt onlangs mee op , na 40 jaar eindigde het in 2024 …
Algemeen kregen de jeugdhuizen een nieuwe outfit met deze golfbeweging … Schitterende (niet-) prettige verhalen kregen we te horen. Net als over Jazz Bilzen iets verderop, toen The Damned en The Clash er o.m. geprogrammeerd stonden en het uitmondde in een ‘battle of Bilzen’ … of het verhaal van The Sex Pistols in de opkomende Effenaar, net over de grens.
Heerlijk genietbaar ontwrichtend hoe de schandaalsfeer door het gewone volkje werd ervaren, van de gitzwarte verhalen naar de ‘ambassadeurs van het Vlaamse platteland’ tot Humo’s Rock Rally, waar een andere Limburgse band in die jaren met de hoofdprijs ging lopen, Noordkaap. Ook kon je niet omheen de invloedssfeer van een 2 Belgen, Nacht und Nebel, Siglo xx, Red Zebra, Aroma di Amore, TC Matic, Arbeid Adelt! en ga zo maar door … in die jaren.
Een harde overgang dan naar de Vlaamse muziek en de Vlaamse beweging, de tekstueel genialiteit van een Raymond en het songschrijversverhaal van de broers van Passal. Of over de Eurovisie inzending van Micha Marah met “Hey Nanah” (79), nooit definitief door haar ingezongen toen, maar nu pas met de serie ‘liefde voor muziek’ hebben ze haar kunnen overhalen. Mooi.
Terug iets meer aangebrand kwam het dan met The Lords Of Acid rond Maurice Engelen (Praga Khan later). Hier de grenzen opzoeken, de cultuur een schop onder de kont geven , een beetje de ‘Benny Hill van de SM rock’ werd het omschreven.

We werden dus leerrijk ontspannend, leuk heen en weer geswitcht in de verhalen van onze twee virtuozen over hoe het eigenwijze, eigenaardige, hobbelige parcours toch een geplaveide weg kreeg. Laat je dus gerust meeslepen in hun unieke kijk …

Toch even dit nog - Het Belpop Bonanza archief
Belpop Bonanza XXX is de vijfde theatertournee en reeds het veertigste (!) podiumproject van de twee. De voorstelling is een zoveelste bewijs dat de geschiedenis van de nationale popmuziek een onuitputtelijke bron van rijkdom en inspiratie is. In 2028 gaan ze nog een maat groter. Wordt vervolgd dus.
Belpop Bonanza (°2013) is de noemer waaronder Jan Delvaux en Jimmy Dewit de nationale muziekgeschiedenis uitspitten. Ze doen dat in theatershows, televisie, radio, boeken, quizzen en wandelroutes. Met kennis van zaken en met een knipoog.
Belpop Bonanza XXX is het 40ste podiumproject van het duo. Ze bedachten 5 reguliere theatervoorstellingen, maakten specials over Will Tura en Zjef Vanuytsel, vierden de verjaardagen van 4 festivals (Blues Peer, Gladiolen, Lokerse Feesten en Rock Herk) en 1 concertzaal (Ancienne Belgique), gingen de Nederlanders bedanken (Merci Nederland) en maakten 26 voorstellingen op maat van gemeenten en regio’s (Belpop Bonanza City Specials).
Belpop Bonanza XXX is de opvolger van Belpop Bonanza Superstar (°2024), goed voor 70 voorstellingen en 30.000 toeschouwers.

Over de Makers
Jan Delvaux (°1962) is op jonge leeftijd in een vat met verhalen over de Belgische popgeschiedenis gevallen. Hij schrijft er boeken over, hij was de externe harde schijf van Belpop op Canvas en hij is - al 20 seizoenen - elke zaterdagmiddag te horen op Radio 1. Volgens Bart Peeters weet hij meer over Belpop dan Wikipedia.
Jimmy Dewit (°1971) is muziekmaker, muziekkiezer en muziekprater. Hij maakt soundtracks voor reclamespots en televisiereeksen en draait platen als DJ Bobby Ewing en met Discobar Galaxie.

V2 records news – Deep Purple - Announces New Album "SPLAT!"

Deep Purple will release their new studio album SPLAT! on July 3rd on earMUSIC.

With more than 120 million albums sold since forming in 1968, Deep Purple have long secured their place in rock history. Rather than simply preserving their legacy, they continue to extend it, driven by the same spirit that defined their earliest work.

Says frontman Ian Gillan: "Where we are now with this incarnation of Deep Purple feels very much like a very 'now' version of Deep Purple as it was in the seventies." Once again, the band has teamed up with renowned producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper). Together, they have crafted an album that draws on the sound and attitude that has always set Deep Purple apart from the rest.

SPLAT! is the heaviest Deep Purple album in many years, with the band playing together in the studio – the way Deep Purple have always recorded. Ian Gillan: "I have to say, now we are very much back in with material that is compatible with 'Highway Star', 'Smoke on the Water', 'Lazy' – the dynamics, the balance, and the fun of the music we made from '69 to '73."

At the heart of SPLAT! is an idea conceived by Ian Gillan. Rather than treating the end as destruction, the album imagines it as transformation: SPLAT! explores the end of humanity not in any crude apocalyptic sense but as a metamorphosis beyond physical existence. To celebrate the release, Deep Purple will continue their extensive 2026 touring schedule with no fewer than 86 shows across 28 countries on three continents. There simply aren't enough superlatives to properly acknowledge the contribution Deep Purple has made to rock music. Having sold more than 120 million albums and filled global arenas for decades, there's little wonder that the respected British radio station Planet Rock named the group the '5th Most Influential Band Ever'. The band were also presented the 'Legend Award' at the 2008 World Music Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Deep Purple truly are 'rock royalty'.

Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip and producer Mike Simonetti—founder of Troubleman Unlimited and Italians Do It Better, and one-half of Pale Blue—have joined forces for a new collaborative EP on Smugglers Way. The release pairs a transcendent cover of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "I See A Darkness" with the luminous original "Perfect Kiss," plus remixes by claire rousay and Black Forces. The EP will be out digitally and on limited edition 12" vinyl on June 12th.

Taylor and Simonetti share "Perfect Kiss," which finds the duo at a striking intersection of styles–melding Simonetti's rock-informed sensibility with Taylor's signature electronic pop craftsmanship. The result is both intimate and expansive, anchored by Taylor's unmistakable vocal. 

Lyrically, "Perfect Kiss" explores themes of identity, alienation, and transformation. "It's about being alienated and an outsider in society while wanting to be accepted for the true person that you are," Taylor explains. "There's the real you, but maybe that's not how you appear to others–so you're asking to be brought out of yourself and into the world, accepted for this other version of yourself." 

"Perfect Kiss" is released alongside a video that was shot on Super 8 film in Los Angeles and London and features Taylor, Simonetti, and Pale Blue's Elizabeth Wight.  

This team-up is years in the making, dating back to Taylor and Simonetti's fateful first meeting while the latter was spinning a set at the now-defunct Williamsburg club Output: "I was really excited about the re-edits he was playing that night," Taylor recalls, explaining that diving deeper into Simonetti's work with Elizabeth Wight as Pale Blue further captured his attention. For Simonetti, the partnership was equally organic: "[Alexis has] always been one of my favorite vocalists."

"I grew up listening to the radio on drives with my parents, whether it was driving around Bayonne, New Jersey or a trip to the Jersey shore," Simonetti muses. "I was raised on pop music and on the radio. Before even making music with Alexis, we would have little conversations and seem to be on a similar wavelength regarding pop music. He's kinda around the same age as me which doesn't hurt either. I think you have to be a certain age to appreciate 80s pop music, because it does not exist as we know it today. So the songs that me and Alexis make are definitely going to have a lot of pop elements to them, even though the subject matter might not be stereotypical pop. But that's the beauty of a good song– hiding darkness behind a pop hook."

Taylor adds, "Having worked at the Domino office in London, situated on Smugglers Way, and having got a job there through my enthusiasm and love for records by the likes of Will Oldham, it's a nice full circle moment for Mike and I to have this EP come out on the label.

"I See A Darkness" and "Perfect Kiss" arrive as a limited edition 12" vinyl EP on June 12, featuring remixes from claire rousay and Black Forces. "Perfect Kiss" is available now. Initially available only on the vinyl edition, the remixes will see a digital release later this year.

From the rich tradition of expansive art-rock that has long flowed out of mainland Europe, the much-loved and critically acclaimed Ghinzu today release Forever, the latest single from their forthcoming fourth studio album and first in 17 years, W.O.W.A, due for release via Play It Again Sam on 29th May 2026.

Forever is a three-part story about love and loss, told from a fresh angle. Frontman John Descamps explains, "The first part is the excitement of discovery, and meeting someone. The second part is when you realise it might not last forever, and the last part is the break-up. But you come to realise the ending isn't a failure." It is part of a natural cycle.

From selling more than 100,000 copies of their breakthrough second album Blow across Europe, to sharing stages with the likes of Muse, Placebo and Iggy & The Stooges, and seeing their music featured on the soundtrack of the global hit film 'Taken', Ghinzu have long stood as one of Belgium's most iconic rock exports.

The forthcoming record W.O.W.A, has been a work in progress for some time, with Ghinzu having written almost 90 fully fledged ideas for their new album, before whittling this down to the final tracklisting. "We had all these hard drives everywhere," recalls Descamps. "We wanted to gather 10 tracks together to really represent all those years of condensed work."

The results take Ghinzu back to basics, before blasting them into uncharted territories. Their formative influences - the energy and expression of Queen; the raucous grunge noise of Nirvana and The Melvins – remain, alongside their passion for visual art. Name-checking the painters Gerhard Richter and Francis Bacon as points of inspiration, they stepped back from their perfectionist leanings to embrace music at its most raw and powerful.

Sessions took place at a multitude of studios. Ghinzu worked in their native Belgium and across the Atlantic in New York; they secluded themselves in the countryside, and worked at studios overlooking the sea. "Our plan was to drift away, creating 'evolutive songs' that could change from one week to another, or simply disappear to maybe reappear. Doubts have less room within such space, as there is nothing to finish. What is left are the survivors of that period, the wild ones who got captured.

From first to last, these are stories built by older musicians, people with experience and maturity. "It's about telling very specific stories in a way that is universal," he says. "There's an almost confrontational aspect with regards to age. We're developing an intergenerational feel in bringing these stories out of specific narratives and pushing them into different spaces."

In dit cd- en releaseproject maak ik de sonnetten van William Shakespeare toegankelijker via muziek. Na de eerste singles Two Loves en So Shall I Live Supposing verschijnt op 5 juni de derde single No Longer Mourn For Me. Vanaf dan volgt er elke maand een nieuwe release, als muzikaal traject richting mijn tournee vanaf eind september 2026.

Met piano, stem, cello en subtiele elektronische elementen krijgt Shakespeare een intieme, hedendaagse muzikale vorm. Het project wil de poëzie niet uitleggen, maar voelbaar maken.

Band is Caroll Vanwelden (zang & piano) + Dominique Vantomme (keyboards & electronica) + Jean-François Assy (cello & electronica).

Last year saw Simply Red celebrate four decades of classic hits and timeless music by embarking upon a 40th anniversary world tour that saw them perform to a total of more than a million fans. Now the band document the most unforgettable tour in their history with the release of the multi-format 'Holding Back the Years: 40 Years of Simply Red, Live in Santiago' on June 26th. It is launched alongside the audio and video for the live version of 'Something Got Me Started'.

Originally released in cinemas last year, this captures five sold-out shows at the Movistar Arena in Santiago which were attended by 75,000 people. The performance lives up to the occasion, with Mick Hucknall's voice as soulful, powerful and full of emotion as ever while the band's stellar musicianship brings every nuance of the original recordings to life.

The setlist is a hit-packed crowdpleaser, taking in 'Stars', 'Holding Back The Years', 'If You Don't Know Me By Now', 'Something Got Me Started', 'Fairground' and many more. And the Santiago crowd live up to their reputation by taking the atmosphere to fever pitch throughout, bringing an electrifying energy to the uptempo numbers as well as almost hymnal singing to the ballads.

This release differs from the original theatrical version. It presents the live show uninterrupted from start-to-finish, with the in-depth interview footage of Mick Hucknall exploring the band's history moved to the DVD / Blu-ray bonus features. It was directed by Dan Massie (Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Sam Fender), and produced by Electric Light Studios in conjunction with Rippla and SimplyRed.com.

It is also available as a standalone 2CD set, a DVD and Blu-ray package, and a marbled yellow triple-vinyl complete with a 12-page booklet. Emerging from the modest working classic suburbs of Manchester in 1985, Simply Red put a fresh spin on influences from the worlds of Philly soul, Motown and classic R&B. They quickly became of the UK's biggest bands, with a #1 single ('Fairground'), nine more Top 10 singles, five #1 albums and another ten records that hit the Top 10. Acclaim emerged in tandem, including three BRIT Awards, two Ivor Novellos, and the MOBO Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Zet je schrap voor het meest ongetemde concert van 2026, want de Zuid-Londense band Fat Dog kondigt hun terugkeer naar de Belgische podia aan! Na een zegetocht langs uitverkochte zalen en passages op de grootste festivals, strijkt de groep op donderdag 29 oktober 2026 neer in De Roma in Antwerpen voor een show die alle conventies aan diggelen slaat. Ontstaan in de isolatie van de COVID-lockdowns, ontpopte Fat Dog zich tot een band met een live-reputatie om u tegen te zeggen. Dat allemaal zonder ook maar een single uit te brengen. In 2023 tekenden ze bij Domino Recording Company, waarna de wereld kennismaakte met hun debuutsingle "King of the Slugs", een zeven minuten durende trip vol punk en techno. In september 2024 verscheen hun langverwachte debuutalbum 'WOOF.'. De plaat werd mede-geproduceerd door James Ford (Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys) en staat volgens frontman Joe Love vol met "screaming-into-a-pillow" muziek. 'WOOF.' is een opwindende mix van electro-punk, rock-'n-roll, techno en zelfs rave. De perfecte soundtrack om je helemaal op te laten gaan.

Fat Dog staat bekend om hun onstuimige optredens. Dat bewezen ze als voorprogramma van Viagra Boys en Yard Act, maar ook met een ijzersterke set op Rock Werchter 2025 en een reeks eigen uitverkochte shows in 2024 en 2025. Bereid je voor op een onvergetelijke avond vol muzikale waanzin en rauwe energie op 29 oktober in De Roma.

Paradise City en Eneco bouwen verder aaneen festival zonder uitstoot - Het Green Power Plan

Op 26, 27 en 28 juni 2026 keert Paradise City Festival terug naar de tuinen van Kasteel Ribaucourt in Perk, vlak bij Brussel. Vorig jaar verwelkomde het festival meer dan 43.000 bezoekers, en ook dit jaar is de vraag groot: alle tickets, behalve die voor zondag, zijn al uitverkocht. Ondanks die groei blijft de insteek hetzelfde. Paradise City staat voor zorgvuldig gecureerde elektronische muziek, sterke scenografie en een duidelijke focus op duurzaamheid. Niet als extra laag, maar als iets dat mee bepaalt hoe het festival wordt opgebouwd en georganiseerd.
Nadat Paradise City in 2024 werd uitgeroepen tot het meest duurzame muziekfestival ter wereld, hebben het festival en Eneco hun samenwerking verder verdiept, met een duidelijke focus op een duurzamer energiesysteem. Samen werken ze aan een festivalinfrastructuur die steeds minder afhankelijk is van fossiele brandstoffen, met een duidelijke focus op zonne-energie, slimme netwerken en batterijopslag.

Fast-rising London trio Ebbb return with news of their debut album, Shallow Hits, ahead of a July 10th release via esteemed independent institution Ninja Tune. A true vindication of all the early hype that the band - comprised of producer Lev Ceylan, vocalist Will Rowland and drummer Scott MacDonald - have built in recent years, Shallow Hits' arrival is led out of the gates by new single 'Now You Know' and news of a bumper tour across the UK and Europe this winter.

'Now You Know' arrives with perfect timing as the British summer rears its head, it finds the trio deploying an ever-growing pop nous to craft a sun-drenched banger sure to soundtrack many a festival in the coming months. Of the track, Rowland explains: "'Now You Know' started life as a playful, riff-led instrumental. Each layer brought the song to life - first the vocals with lyrics that depict obsessive love, and then the punchiness of the live drum groove, which really tied the song together in the studio. The song is the most playful and optimistic on the album."

Alongside news of the album comes word of a headline tour across the UK and Europe in support of Shallow Hits. The UK shows kick off November 25th at Sheffield's Hallamshire Hotel and include a headline London date at Club Cheek on December 1st, before heading to the continent for shows in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Czechia, culminating in Switzerland on December 16th.

When Ebbb released their genre-busting EP, All at Once, in 2024, they described their unique juxtaposing sounds, fusing glistening melody and harmonies with gritty noise and industrial rhythms, as "Brian Wilson meets Death Grips". However, two years on, such is the rapid feeling of evolution within the group, that such a statement now feels lacking. "I don't think it fits anymore," says Ceylan. "That was us trying to explain the extremes in our music, but at this point it's so much more than that. It's expanded and it's bigger – it's multi-faceted. For each idea, or each bit of vision we had, we wanted to deliver it in a very maximalist way."

The band have built a storied mythology on London's underground live circuit with devastating performances and were signed before releasing a single song, having opened for the likes of Mary in the Junkyard, Fcukers, Porridge Radio, PVA, The Voidz, The Orchestra (For Now) and recently heading out on the road with Shame for their European tour in 2025 as well as hitting up festivals including Truck, End of the Road, Latitude, The Great Escape, Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris and more EU festivals including Reeperbahn and Left of the Dial.

They've enjoyed incredible press support for a new artist including praise from The Guardian, NME, Rolling Stone UK, The Quietus ("Combining choral and orchestral roots with a love of grindcore, new wave, dream pop and techno"), DIY, Clash, The Line of Best Fit, Dork, So Young Magazine, Wonderland and more. At radio they've racked up 4 playlist adds to date at BBC 6 Music championed by Huw Stephens, Lauren Laverne, Nick Grimshaw, Huw Stephens, Craig Charles, Gilles Peterson, New Music Fix Daily and Chris Hawkins.

Which brings us to Shallow Hits: an album of real clout and intensity that perfectly mirrors the maximalist approach Ceylan mentions, getting as much as possible from every song and sound on it. Aided by working with co-producer Tom Stafford, the album also benefits enormously from MacDonald's live playing, which was not present on the EP.

The scope, variety and ambition of the album is clear from the off. 'Come Alive' whirs into being quietly before morphing into a sun-kissed, radiant piece of calypso-esque electronic pop; pre-album single 'Home Ground', which is currently on the playlist at BBC 6 Music, turns contemplative, stark vocals into an after-hours belter; 'Shallow Hits' is as deft and detailed as it is big, bold and euphoric; while the wonky yet propulsive charge of 'Side On' sounds like a drum 'n' bass club and church choir combined.

A fervent eclecticism and unpredictable restlessness underpins the album. In its latter stages, it dives into the moody technoid textures and multi-layered harmonies that characterised the All at Once EP – exemplified by 'Youth' and closing track 'I'm Not Enough', which lands an emotional gut punch to an album that is already littered with them. For all that, though, there's a remarkable coherence and identity underpinning the album. Ebbb are exploring far and wide, deep and vast, yet they do so via an approach that remains unmistakably them.

Shallow Hits is an album bursting with ideas, textures, rhythms, detail and emotion. A bold and singular debut record from a group who truly do not sound like anyone else right now.
