Vanmiddag is ex-politica, tv-persoonlijkheid en zangeres Margriet Hermans op 72-jarige leeftijd overleden. Bij deze het bericht dat haar dochter Celien Hermans zopas deelde:
Met intens verdriet, maar ook met een onbeschrijfelijke dankbaarheid, nemen papa (Frank) en ik afscheid van mijn allerliefste mama, Margriet Hermans.
Voor Vlaanderen was zij een zangeres, een televisiepersoonlijkheid, een politica, een vrouw met een uitgesproken stem en een groot hart. Voor mij was ze vooral mijn thuis. Mijn veilige haven. Mijn grootste criticus én supporter. Mijn beste vriendin en eerlijkste klankbord. Mijn businesspartner en collega. Mijn alles.
De voorbije weken hebben wij samen nog heel bewust geleefd. Geweend, gelachen, herinneringen opgehaald, elkaars hand vastgehouden. Vastgehouden tot we wel moesten loslaten. En zelfs in haar afscheid bleef ze mama. Bezorgd om iedereen rondom haar. Dankbaar. Liefdevol. Sterk.

Swedish singer-songwriter The Tallest Man On Earth aka Kristian Matsson is announcing the song “Colors” today, his first new music in nearly three years. Recorded by Mattson in his home studio, the song whirls and swirls with his violin, guitar playing and signature croon. The Tallest Man On Earth has captivated audiences using “every inch of his long guitar cord to roam the stage: darting around, crouching, stretching, hip-twitching, perching briefly and jittering away…” (The New York Times). He will be playing a selection of festival and headline shows in Sweden and Ireland and the Uk this summer.
Critics often draw comparisons between The Tallest Man on Earth and Bob Dylan, citing similarities in both songwriting and vocal style. Matsson himself has acknowledged Dylan's influence, revealing that he started listening to him at the age of fifteen. Fascinated by Dylan's covers, he delved into their origins, which gradually introduced him to early American folk artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. However, Matsson is quick to distance himself from being part of any specific tradition, stating, “I don’t want to be part of a tradition. I just want to do what feels natural to me. This is how I play, and this is how I write songs.”
His 2023 album ‘Henry St.’ marks the first time Matsson recorded an album in a band setting. As described by Matsson, it’s the “most me album yet, because it covers so many of the different noises in my head. Having been away from it taught me that making music and performing is what I’m doing for the rest of my life, and I’m so grateful for it. It has given me new confidence and playfulness. This is what I do. It’s unconditional.”

Now Black Marble, aka Chris Stewart, announces plans to release Life in Small Spaces, his first full-length album since 2021’s Fast Idol, due for release August 21st, 2026 on Sacred Bones.
Black Marble's Life in Small Spaces is an album of commentary, analysis of the music industry, discussion of authenticity, and a letter to all independent creatives in the world. Drawing on early American left-of-the-dial “college radio” staccato guitar lines (recalling Pylon, The Necessaries, and R. Stevie Moore), and live drum samples (a nod to Wire’s simple metronomic style), the album takes on more of a live sound, trading in Stewart’s usual walls of synths.
According to Stewart: “I always knew a lot of people in music struggled to make ends meet, but it surprised me to learn that the people you thought would be doing well often weren't. For me, seeing the business from the inside like that changed how I looked at things. When I looked up to see a new artist on a billboard, I started to wonder, will I one day have to pretend to be something I'm not, in order to succeed? The life of an artist goes on after your moment ends, you know? So who do you want to be in the end and how do you want to be seen by the people that know you? I made Life In Small Spaces while thinking about that, and for me, it serves as my own ideal for living an artistic life. I'm doing it as a vocation, not some last ditch effort to escape to some other world. I made this record not only as a way of saying that, but as a way of saying it's ok to feel that way. It's ok for people to sacrifice some degree of creature comfort in order to live a life you believe in. And it doesn't have to be an endless search for something just out of reach, it can be a permanent way of being and something that sustains you.”
The announcement is accompanied by the lead single “Jim Carol New Year” which comes with a video starring Chris Stewart, directed by Clayton Hunt. “Jim Carol New Year” (its title a nod to both author, poet, and musician Jim Carroll, and holiday season carols) casts another critical eye on life, rejecting false promises of religion, advice from so-called experts, or easy answers in favor of self validation and independence of thought. While drawing us in with a more rhythmic synth melody, twirling listeners into an illusion of joy, the phrase “I forgot my money” is used over and over to convey all the things the protagonist isn't buying. “If you want to be free,” Stewart says, “you have to watch out for some of life's classic pitfalls.”
With regard to the video, Clayton Hunt shares: “Chris had an idea of a house in the distance with two travelers being drawn toward it. We wanted each traveler to represent a different version of the journey. One traveler struggled unprotected against the landscape, the other was cautious, outfitted in an orange hazmat - type suit. I decided to shoot 16mm and capture everything against the green landscape, creating a vibrant contrast. That imagery helped guide the production and inform the story.”
Black Marble hummed to life in the fall of 2012, switched on by the early aughts New York City synthwave revival. Today, fourteen years on and seven releases later, Chris Stewart continues to make records hunched over machines that warm to the touch when turned on and need to be coaxed to stay in tune. His albums, written, recorded, and delivered solely by Stewart, remain singular visions, with songs that seek to convey a diffuse pastiche, now shaped by a desire to wrap the whole thing in a message that speaks to where he’s been and where he wants to go.
His latest vision, Life in Small Spaces, sees Stewart comment on the music industry and his role within it, reflecting on how underground music has changed over time, and how a blueprint for keeping things simple and being true to oneself is the only ideal for living in this complicated landscape.
Stewart's desire to span time with his ideals intact shows up in the songwriting, which retains the project’s pop-sensibilities while adding new tricks to the bag. Life in Small Spaces trades walls of synths for more left-of-the-dial, “college radio”-inspired guitar. Stewart explains the reason for the change as a way to “create this chime-y hypnotic quality. Like a radio dial that is between two stations.”
On a first listen, the album lives up to this billing as sounds seem to come from some lost radio station during a Saturday night mix. However, on second listen, certain themes and characters emerge from Stewart's stories. Overarchingly, these are people expressing some of life's deepest dissatisfactions or labouring under some cartoonish delusion that affords them some immunity.
“It Always Comes to Me,” introduces a self obsessed and arrogant protagonist that believes they can talk their way into and out of anything. Lost in the delusion that looking out for oneself at the expense of others is a mantra, not knowing that ultimately, they are the architect of their own isolation and loneliness. A new sonic landscape is the backdrop here, with leading bass and guitar tones that hail in the warmth and personal touch of a live performance, guiding us into the album’s first chapter.
Stewart stands firm in his convictions on “Other Man's Dream” – “I could never go crazy, for the other man's dream, to be free of the sad life that's coming after me” he sings as he points out that people that we seek validation from aren't the people who have to live with the results of our decisions. In life's spaces, big and small, it's us who have to live out the lives we've chosen and only us who can determine its value.
“Anything,” sonically the most upbeat song on the record, is in its message anything but. “I want to dream us up. I’ll do anything, but it’s not enough!” is a lamentation full of snarling frustration with the gap between perceived and felt experience, and a message for anyone who’s ever felt like an imposter, unable to feel the joy that society tells us comes so easily to everyone else.
Through Black Marble’s entrancing electronic tones, Stewart further confronts difficult themes, “Missing History” with its more synth-centred clinical feel explores the idea of lacking a true cultural identity and heritage, and the lasting weight of a nation’s past. “Panopticon Calls” with its jivey beat and bouncing bass melody, shifts perspective to a paranoid, shut in person, pulled deeper under the influence of media and external pressure before breaking free.
Visually, Life in Small Spaces features Stewart alone on the cover in a sparse room, surrounded with an eruption of confetti – an image that reflects a self-contained world that may appear small, bleak and cluttered, but is fully his own. A fitting frame for a record that embraces limitation as a form of clarity, and one that tells the story of choosing a simple life, giving up stability and comfort for an existence of bold and engaging connections. This further reflects Black Marble’s confidence in not only his artistry, but the community that has grown and evolved around the project over the years. “[Life in Small Spaces] is what I want to talk about as an artist. It's where I am at this exact moment and I know I'm not alone in how I feel.”
This sentiment isn’t a disclaimer. It’s the point. Life in Small Spaces, with its introspective lyricism disguised neatly within Black Marble’s radiant musicality, is an earnest analysis of the pressures that shape artists. It is an invitation to accept and consciously agree to a more minimal lifestyle for the sake of creative expression and freedom, and to never need to compromise your values for the tempting illusion of success.

LAWIJSTRIJD, het legendarische muziekconcours van het Waasland is terug in een samenwerkingsverband van De Casino Concertzaal, Lokerse Feesten, Crammerock en jeugdhuizen Den Eglantier (De Nest), De Cramme en Okapi. De wedstrijd wordt ondersteund door Cultuurtuin Waas (Interwaas) en de stads- en gemeentebesturen van Lokeren, Sint- Niklaas en Stekene. (zie info site )
AFTRAP: Drie spots worden vrijgehouden voor jonge talenten uit de buurt die hun kans willen wagen om op één van onze podia te spelen die dag. Zij ontvangen naast podiumervaring en eeuwige roem ook catering en drankbonnen voor een dolle avond. Concreet zijn we op zoek naar allround dj’s, maar ook dj’s en live acts uit de hardere en experimentele elektronische genres zijn welkom met hun inzendingen.
De Tijdloze: Tijd voor 90: De Tijdloze en De Casino slaan jaarlijks de handen in elkaar om het muziekrepertoire van de gouden jaren negentig te vieren. Ontstaan als eindejaarslijst op Studio Brussel en na 35 jaar uitgegroeid tot een muzikaal begrip, vervelde De Tijdloze (100) in 2018 tot een onafhankelijk online radiokanaal (VRT MAX / DAB+) waar onder meer Stijn Van De Voorde (For Those About To Rock) en Roos Van Acker (Jouw Tijdloze Ochtenradio) de pop- en rockgeschiedenis alle eer aandoen. Liefhebbers van nostalgische hits kunnen sindsdien afstemmen op deze volwassen geworden digitale stream om er vierentwintig uur per dag, zeven dagen per week de beste klassiekers te beluisteren.
GREAT GIGS IN THE PARK Tien extraordinaire concertavonden De Casino Concertzaal en het stadsbestuur Sint-Niklaas presenteren een derde editie van Great Gigs in the Park. Deze reeks openluchtconcerten, die plaatsvinden in de feeërieke setting van het historische Casino Park (DC terras), wordt dit jaar gespreid over drie weken (van woensdag 14 juni tot donderdag 6 juli) en bundelt in die periode tien extraordinaire openluchtshows op de Casino[1]kiosk. Gezelligheid is het codewoord tijdens Great Gigs in the Park, want voor elk concertavonden worden slechts 600 tickets aangeboden. Programma De line-up van Great Gigs in the Park biedt een staalkaart van waar de Casino voor staat, zijnde een veelheid aan uiteenlopende muziekgenres: van hardrock en post-metal over elektrofunk en groove tot roots en droompop. De Casino presenteert ook elke concertavond een uitgekiende support-act: laureaten van Lawijtstrijd, speerpunten uit de Brusselse elektrojazz-hype, punk-calamiteiten, een crossover tussen doom en oriëntal, maar ook western swing-adepten en singer-songwriters.

Les Nuits Weekender
Les Nuits Weekender dat plaatsvindt in november. Deze editie wordt een herfstversie van ons traditionele lentefestival, Les Nuits Botanique, maar dan over één weekend. Maar je vindt hier ook dezelfde passie voor nieuwe ontdekkingen die ons zo dierbaar is, in een gedurfd en eclectisch programma
Het Tough Enough festival
Het festival onderscheidt zich door zijn tweeledige programmatie, waarbij traditionele, akoestische- en 'roots' acts worden gecombineerd met meer rock-geïnspireerde sounds, van garage tot punk, surf en psychedelische rock.
Een echte muzikale smeltkroes waar elke artiest op de een of andere manier een unieke band heeft met de blues. En omdat we in de Bota zijn, zal naast gevestigde bands die al bekend zijn bij liefhebbers van de betreffende stijlen, ook veel aandacht worden besteed aan opkomende bands die de toekomst van deze genres vormgeven, de grenzen van hun muziekgenre verleggen, innoveren.

Benenwerk
In augustus wordt de Brugse binnenstad opnieuw omgetoverd tot één grote dansvloer tijdens de editie van Benenwerk 'Ballroom Brugeoise'. Op verschillende podia kan het publiek een hele avond proeven van een uitgebreid aanbod aan dansstijlen en dat volledig gratis. Het evenement is door de jaren heen dan ook uitgegroeid tot een vaste waarde.

LES NUITS BOTANIQUE 2026 – EINDBALANS
Wat een editie. We sluiten deze Les Nuits Botanique 2026 af met een brede glimlach en kriebels in de benen. Ook het weer was ronduit uitzonderlijk, en dat was dag na dag af te lezen op de gezichten van de festivalgangers.
Meer dan 18.500 muziekliefhebbers bezochten deze editie van de Nuits Botanique! Een beter resultaat dan in 2025 en het bewijs dat het nieuwe concept, van een festival dat zichzelf na meer dan dertig edities opnieuw heeft uitgevonden, gesmaakt wordt. Drie van de twaalf avonden waren uitverkocht.
Directeur Frédéric Maréchal: "We hebben de organisatie van het festival vorig jaar aangepast (één ticket per dag) en zijn erg tevreden over hoe het werkt. Elke dag heeft zijn eigen esthetiek, waardoor we dieper kunnen gaan en ons kunnen onderdompelen in een muzikale niche en alle nieuwe artiesten die daaruit voorkomen. Dat is precies de ziel van de Botanique."
Tot de hoogtepunten behoren de hypnotiserende performance van de Frans-Spaans-Marokkaanse rapper Ino Casablanca, de gigantische moshpits tijdens het concert van Shame, de overweldigende trance van producer Danny L Harle, de heerlijk soulvolle vibes van de Braziliaanse wereldster Liniker, de verbluffende set van Chassol, en de traan die het afsluitende optreden van Smerz ons ontlokte onder een gloeiend roze hemel.
Les Nuits blijven bovenal een ontdekkingsfestival, en ook deze editie bevestigde dat. We onthouden: de snijdende rap van Juste Shani, de betoverende beheersing van Anaiis, de orkestrale folk rock van Ugly, punchy cold pop van thredd, de onuitputbare energie van drummer-punk ZEP, een tijdloos moment uit de straten van Montréal met Les Louanges, en de onweerstaanbare pop van Camille Yembe. Ze onderstreepten eens te meer de rol van Botanique en Les Nuits in het doorbreken van nieuwe namen en nieuwe geluiden.
Een van de memorabele momenten van deze editie was ongetwijfeld de collectieve hysterie die het liveoptreden van Angine de Poitrine teweegbracht. We zijn er erg trots op dat het Québécois duo hun eerste festivalshow in België bij ons gaf. Op 28 mei gebeurde er iets zeldzaams op de Fountain Stage: een ware verbondenheid in polka duts tussen artiesten en een bijzonder divers publiek. De lijm was classic Botanique tegelijk complex en gelaagd, maar ook enorm meeslepend en toegankelijk.
Het eerste weekend van de Nuits stond in het teken van Obsidian Dust, voor het eerst twee dagen. In samenwerking met Metadrone (bekend van hun Desertfest) bekokstoofden we voor deze tweede editie van het festival binnen het festival een line-up voor liefhebbers van metal en heavy rock. Onder meer Earthless, Yob, Hermano en King Buffalo gaven memorabele shows. Obsidian Dust wordt zo een vaste afspraak voor fans van het genre.
Aan Belgische kant bevestigden artist in residence Alice George Perez, Stonks, Forsissies en Lipstick Music hun groei. Onder veel persaandacht zagen we ook Gala Dragot uitgroeien tot een nationale sensatie die de landsgrenzen ongetwijfeld zal overstijgen.
Al met al bevestigt deze editie van Nuits Botanique 2026 een eenvoudig evenwicht: een eclectische programmering waarin de podia elkaar eerder aanvullen dan contrasteren. En bovenal een editie die een zeer duidelijke indruk achterlaat, die door velen wordt gedeeld: die van een levendig, nieuwgierig festival dat zich richt op opkomend talent. Dit alles op een magische en unieke locatie.
En nu gaan we rusten. Of toch niet, want: Les Nuits Weekender komt er alweer snel aan, van vrijdag 30 oktober tot zondag 1 november.

Belgian artist Kristo returns with his new single “Hopelessly Devoted”, out May 29. The track unfolds as a silky, groove-led R&B cut where a laid-back rhythm locks into warm horn accents and an intimate yet infectious vocal hook. Blending classic songwriting with a modern soul aesthetic, Kristo continues to refine a sound rooted in musicality and artistic integrity.
As a true artist and multi-instrumentalist in every sense, Kristo writes, plays, and co produces his own music, drawing from a wide palette of influences including vintage R&B, funk, soul, jazz, and classic pop. His work reflects a strong focus on craftsmanship and depth, balanced with a contemporary edge.
“Hopelessly Devoted” further expands the sonic world of Kristo’s forthcoming debut album, due in December 2026. Shaped by a deeply musical upbringing: his father a tenor saxophonist and his mother a marimba teacher, his artistry is grounded in a lifelong dedication to music. Influenced by artists such as Prince, David Bowie, and D’Angelo, Kristo has developed a distinct voice and sound of his own. This has already translated into notable live experience, including performances at Gent Jazz Festival and North Sea Jazz (Talent Stage), as well as support slots for artists such as Macy Gray and Theo Croker.
With two more singles planned ahead of his debut album, Kristo continues to build momentum as a rising artist in today’s contemporary soul, funk and R&B landscape, with a clear crossover appeal and growing international potential.

Instrumentalist Kristiaan Deruytter. Music has always been a huge part of his life: as the son of renowned saxophone player Frank Deruytter and a mother who teaches marimba and percussion, he grew up in an environment where music was ever-present. It quickly became clear that Kristiaan would carve out his own artistic path.
After a classical music education and experience in several youth and teenage bands, he performed from 2017 to 2019 as singer and guitarist of the pop-funk trio Savoir-Vivre, releasing two EPs and multiple singles. He also frequently appeared as a guest with the 16-piece big band OTO Machine, led by his father.
In July 2022 he earned his Bachelor of Music – Pop – Guitar at Codarts University Rotterdam, becoming the first and only student to ever receive the maximum possible score for his guitar major. With that confidence and a solid artistic foundation, he launched his career as an artist and musician.
Under the name Kristo he released his debut EP “Restore” in 2022, followed by the EP “Childhood” in March 2024.
