Rotten Mind - Swedish garagerock band - I don't have a goal with my music, I just have to make music and so I do

The band has a new album called ‘Unflavored’. The review of the album you can read here .

Off course we’ re beside the music also interested in the minds behind the band. A band that could do it well in Belgium because we have pretty much bands who are representative or similar to Rotten Mind. A scene with bands like Equal Idiots, Sons, The Idiots, Dirk etc… So we had a talk with Jacob Arvidsson (guitars and vocals).

First of all: congratulations with your fifth and again superb album. Was it difficult or easy to make this time?
Thank you. It wasn’t either difficult or easy, we just took our time more this time. Both with writing the songs and in the studio. We kinda did the same thing as we always do, but we had a lot more time. And Kristofer, who recorded the album, was much more like a producer than what we’ve had before.

Each band has his own way to make songs, how do you make songs?
It’s usually me or Johan who has an idea, and then we make something out of it together. It could be a riff or a verse and chorus, or basically anything and we kinda jam it until there’s a song. But we’ve also written songs in other ways, like sometimes I have a full song and just show it to the others.

What’s the main goal you want to reach with the music?
I don’t really have a goal or anything like that. It’s just what I do. I have to play music, so I do it. But of course we wanna go places as well. We wanna tour as much as we can, we wanna play fun live shows, we wanna evolve with the music

What do you want it do with the listeners?
It doesn’t really matter to me if they wanna dance to it or if they wanna sit down and listen or whatever. If they like it, that’s cool

I saw you’ve got a new bass player? What’s the story behind and was it easy to find a new one?
The story is that our old bass player quit the band after just 3 shows. I was talking to Liz, our new bass player, about playing together since she moved to Uppsala a couple of years back, but it never happened. When we thought about who was going to play bass, we thought she seemed perfect for it, so we just asked her to join the band right away.

You’re gonna tour mainly in Germany to promote the record. A pity that the band can’t come around here but for the moment i think the band is not well known in our region. Is it difficult this days (with the covid and stuff…) to tour through whole Europe?
It is difficult to plan a tour now. We never know for sure that it’s going to happen, but we are quite certain it’ll be fine this time. We don’t want to postpone this again. And we also have a show booked in Belgium, it’ll be announced soon!

What can we expect at a Rotten Mind performance?
Hopefully a good time! We are trying our best to play as good as we can and I hope that’s good enough.

Are there particular themes you wanna tell us with ‘Unflavored’?
I always try to write about personal stuff. Like, things that matter to me It doesn’t have to be very deep or so but I write about life in general. The song ”Unflavored” for example is just something funny we talked about while we were out drinking. It’s about people who listen to alternative or extreme music that always try to say to other people they have no taste because they don’t like weird music. It’s quite funny if you think about it.

Which words, nouns you wanna post for “Rotten Mind”? I mean i would say: energetic, punk, fun
Oh this is a hard question: Loser punks.

Een plaat opleggen die meteen met een brok adrenaline uit de startblokken schiet, hoe fijn is dat niet? In elk geval is dit zo met de vijfde plaat van het Zweedse Rotten Mind (afkomstig uit Uppsala). “Inflammable” is de eerste track en ze schiet inderdaad in vuur. Heerlijke bas van de nieuwe bassiste Liz Panella, een gedreven zang, gitaar en drums maken het af. Daarna volgt de single “Serpent Eyes” dat heel wat dark wave en postpunk bevat met catchy zanglijnen. “Die Young” gaat dan weer meer naar de punk en garagerock.
De productie klinkt super en als band klinken ze ook volwassener dan op hun plaat “Rotten Mind” uit 2017. Zoveel is er muzikaal sedertdien niet veranderd maar ‘t zit hem in de details en de afwerking. En ze hebben ook wat meer elementen uit andere aanverwante muziek in hun songs verwerkt. Het halftrage “(I Ain’t) One To Talk To” heeft een heerlijke donkere bas en lekker gitaartje dat rondscheurt. Love It! Het doet mij wat aan de The Strokes denken.
Het titelnummer “Unflavored” is verre van smaakloos (vergeef mij de flauwe woordspeling). Het bevat een vrij catchy refrein. Zanger Jacob Arvidsson zijn karakterstiek stemgeluid heeft er nog een beetje gekte bij gekregen lijkt mij, wat mooi uitpakt op deze muziek.
Gedurende twaalf songs weet Rotten Mind ons te boeien en bezig te houden. “Unflavored” is een sterke aanrader voor wie van donkere en snedige gitaarmuziek houdt. Je kan je er niet aan mispakken want er staat geen enkele zwakke track tussen. Iets wat ik ook al van “Rotten Mind” uit 2017 zei trouwens.
Live heb ik ze nog niet mogen smaken maar als ze terug onze contreien aandoen ben ik één van de eerste om te gaan kijken. Ze groeiden sedert hun debuut qua bekendheid en stonden al in magazines zoals NME, Vive Le Rock en Gaffa. Ik zou zeggen verplicht luistermateriaal.

Voor wie houdt van o.a. The Strokes, Sons, The Vibrators, The Hives, 1919 etc…
