Shearwater announced today that their new album, The New World, will be released on July 31st, 2026, via the band’s own Polyborus label in partnership with Secretly Distribution. The band of Jonathan Meiburg, Emily Lee, and Dan Duszynski also shared the album’s two lead singles, the epic “Daydream Unbeliever” and the soulful “More and More,” which find the band in top form: stirring but ineffable, intimate but widescreen. “If you’re like us, you wake up feeling like the world’s on fire, and hoping you could reckon with it if you knew where to begin,” says Meiburg. “‘Daydream Unbeliever’ and ‘More and More’ come from this uneasy place. If they help you feel a little less insane, welcome home.”
“Daydream Unbeliever” billows out with classic Shearwater grandeur, including soaring strings and a gong smashed by Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart; its video was filmed and edited by Meiburg during research in Antarctica. But “More and More” is a journey inward: church bells and birds recorded in Berlin give way to a song about escaping paralysis. There’s a feeling of gently building pressure and widening scope as a halting piano becomes a wild, insistent forest of strange and beautiful sounds, including a qanun, a cello squeezed through a Leslie cabinet, and a 12-string guitar that sounds like it’s 20 feet tall.
In the past quarter-century, those in the know have watched Shearwater slyly become one of the most distinctive, consistent, and adventurous American bands. The New World’s nine immersive songs find the group farther afield than ever: the album’s supporting cast includes instrumental wizard Shahzad Ismaily, saxophonist and clarinetist Doug Wieselman, qanunist Farouz Zriek, guitarist Leo Abrahams, ngonist Mamadou Kouyate, percussionists Mahamadou Tounkara and Moctar Kouyate (of Malian group Ngoni Ba), and the unclassifiable drummer Thor Harris. That might sound like a lot of passengers, but they’re ideal company for a headlong, globe-spanning journey through joy, confusion, defiance, reverence, and tenderness, with Meiburg’s voice as a graceful yet elusive guide. Both spare and ornate, The New World is deeply absorbing; it’s hard not to listen to the end once you drop in.
The New World is also an artistic risk. After releasing six albums with Sub Pop and Matador Records, Shearwater chose to crowdfund, produce, and release the album themselves with the help of Secretly Distribution, distilling it from four years of traveling, fieldwork, and collaboration. It was recorded in London, Berlin, New York, and the band’s Texas headquarters, with Duszynski as chief engineer and additional production by Leo Abrahams and Danny Reisch; Reisch mixed the album with the band in Los Angeles.

Over Brazzmatazz: Brazzmatazz: de steampunk brassband die elk podium in vuur en vlam zet
Brazzmatazz is een 18-koppige steampunk brassband uit Gent die theatrale show elementen combineert met rauwe muzikale energie. Met een unieke mix van New Orleans grooves, Balkanvibes, funk, drum-’n-bass en stevige beats creëren ze hun kenmerkende brassband bangers: energieke, dansbare nummers die elk publiek meeslepen.
De band staat bekend om explosieve live shows vol kleur, kostuums en stoomkracht, waarin het publiek wordt ondergedompeld in een totaalervaring. Geen gewoon concert, maar een feestelijke, theatrale trip waarin muziek, performance en beleving samensmelten.
De voorbije jaren tourde Brazzmatazz doorheen Europa, met shows op Boomtown Fair (UK) en optredens in Kroatië, het Baskenland, Nederland, Frankrijk, Luxemburg en natuurlijk België, waar ze onder meer op de Gentse Feesten afsloten en podia als Dranouter, Bozar, Vooruit en DeSingel opbliezen. Daarnaast bracht de band een eigen boek uit, waarmee ze hun steampunk universum en verhaal verder tot leven brachten.
In 2026 verschijnt hun derde studioalbum Crank Up The Pressure, waarin ze hun sound en energie naar een hoger niveau tillen. Met dit album bevestigt Brazzmatazz waarom ze dé referentie zijn voor feestelijke, vurige en hard-hitting brassmuziek, klaar om elk podium plat te spelen.

De Gentse steampunk brassband Brazzmatazz schakelt een versnelling hoger. Op 12 juni verschijnt hun derde studioalbum Crank Up The Pressure; een krachtige mix van grooves, ritmische drive en theatrale energie. De release gaat gepaard met een gelijknamige single en een bijhorende videoclip die het visuele verhaal van de band verder uitbouwt.
Na de eerder gelanceerde singles Clockwork Concerto en Walk The Plank wordt duidelijk dat Brazzmatazz haar sound verder aanscherpt. Verwacht een mix van New Orleans grooves, Balkan-invloeden, funk en drum-’n-bass, samengebracht tot dansbare brassband tracks die live volledig tot hun recht komen.
De composities op Crank Up The Pressure komen uit de creatieve koker van muzikaal leider Sanne Werkers, aangevuld met werk van trompettiste Leen Bervoets, altsaxofonist Kwinten Van De Keere, tenorsaxofonist Bauke Meersman en baritonsaxofonist Mathias Van Severen. Samen bouwen ze verder aan het herkenbare geluid van de band: strak, energiek en met ruimte voor detail.
De visuele identiteit van het album en de nieuwe videoclip is opnieuw in handen van Maarten Vanhoucke, die eerder ook verantwoordelijk was voor de volledige vormgeving van de band, inclusief hun boek The Book Of Brazzmatazz. Muziek en beeld blijven zo nauw met elkaar verbonden.
De officiële release van Crank Up The Pressure wordt gevierd op 12 juni in De Centrale (Gent)
Tegelijk lanceert de band een crowdfundingcampagne om het album ook op vinyl uit te brengen, een fysieke uitgave voor wie de muziek graag tastbaar beleeft.
Na de release trekt Brazzmatazz opnieuw de baan op, met passages op verschillende festival- en clubpodia deze zomer. De band staat bekend om haar sterke live-reputatie en blijft een vaste waarde op binnen- en buitenlandse podia.

Now, NYC duo Widowspeak have announced their new album Roses, due out June 5th via Captured Tracks. Lead single “If You Change” captures everything that’s made the long-running group a staying force, from its breezy guitars to the impossibly rich chorus, there’s a timeless quality imbued with the twang of a Lynchian roadhouse band.
On the single, vocalist Molly Hamilton says she “thought about the fear of change, and when things (situations, objects) feel stuck in time because of a fear of ruining them. You always hear “mint condition” as though it is as an asset, but it also means that thing hasn’t been used, lived with, loved. It never gets to fulfill its destiny.”
The longtime duo of Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas, Roses arrives as Widowspeak’s seventh album. One of many bands to crop up in a fertile New York City music scene over 16 years ago, they started out shuffling gear between venues now-since shuttered (Glasslands, Cake Shop, 285 Kent, Death By Audio to name a few) and their practice space in Monster Island Basement (now a Trader Joe’s). Widowspeak is now a married couple, working day jobs in their own off-season. Robert is a carpenter, Molly a waitress. Roses is populated not with dramatic overtures but with the backdrop of the minutiae and repetition of daily acts. Small observations before, during, and after work: the ritual of pouring water for customers, catching a cold on your day off. Daydreaming about winning the lottery, or maybe realizing you already won.
They recorded the album last January at the Old Carpet Factory on the Greek island Hydra: a studio in an old house tucked into the village’s steep hills. It’s quiet there in winter, when the tourists have all gone home. Longtime touring members Willy Muse, John Andrews, and Noah Bond serve here as the players. Roses was then taken home and slowly, lightly tinkered with, before being deftly mixed by Alex Farrar at Drop of Sun Studios, and mastered by Greg Obis at Chicago Mastering.
“Incidentally one of my favorite childhood books is “The Velveteen Rabbit” and growing up we had this VHS copy of Meryl Streep reading it over Ken Burns-esque slow-panned illustrations,” shares Hamilton on the playful video. “It’s sort of burned into my mind. Even now, I can hear her voice saying “I am real!” My sister ended up getting me a copy of it on vinyl, which is incredible. Maybe I’ve also been thinking about it more now because we have a board book version we read to the baby. But, the point of the story is that only through being loved can something become “real”... and that’s sort of how the video came to be what it is.”
Across the ten tracks that make up Roses, intimate spaces and stages of love are captured with a nostalgic, vaseline-coated lens. If music can simultaneously be naturalistic and noir, saturated and lush, that is Widowspeak. This is a band that knows how to set a scene.
There’s dream and power pop, a little Stones, maybe some Petty, open and languid ballads with the twang of a Lynchian roadhouse band… Perhaps you hear REM, Yo La Tengo or Cat Power. A little Neil Young in Hamilton’s references to working at the diner. The magic of the band is, still and always, the interplay between Molly and Robert in their two leading roles: her languid, textured voice and his visceral guitar playing. And as producer, Robert captures the ephemeral magic of a band finding a song in the studio: something that still bears traces of the directness of Molly’s voice memos and the dense guitar tapestries of the demos. The rough-hewn marks of the tools are still evident, the noise kept in.
“Can’t hold too tight or I’ll have nothing, Like a candy melts in your hand.” As the album closer “Hourglass” contemplates the fleeting nature of something, anything, it illustrates what is most true about Widowspeak. At the heart of it, their music is special because it is real: most of all for the people making it. Fragile and temporary, and worthwhile… like love itself.

Lawijtstrijd - Lawijtstrijd - Muziekconcours Waasland
LAWIJSTRIJD, het legendarische muziekconcours van het Waasland is terug in een samenwerkingsverband van De Casino Concertzaal, Lokerse Feesten, Crammerock en jeugdhuizen Den Eglantier (De Nest), De Cramme en Okapi. De wedstrijd wordt ondersteund door Cultuurtuin Waas (Interwaas) en de stads- en gemeentebesturen van Lokeren, Sint- Niklaas en Stekene. (zie info site )
AFTRAP: Drie spots worden vrijgehouden voor jonge talenten uit de buurt die hun kans willen wagen om op één van onze podia te spelen die dag. Zij ontvangen naast podiumervaring en eeuwige roem ook catering en drankbonnen voor een dolle avond. Concreet zijn we op zoek naar allround dj’s, maar ook dj’s en live acts uit de hardere en experimentele elektronische genres zijn welkom met hun inzendingen.
De Tijdloze: Tijd voor 90: De Tijdloze en De Casino slaan jaarlijks de handen in elkaar om het muziekrepertoire van de gouden jaren negentig te vieren. Ontstaan als eindejaarslijst op Studio Brussel en na 35 jaar uitgegroeid tot een muzikaal begrip, vervelde De Tijdloze (100) in 2018 tot een onafhankelijk online radiokanaal (VRT MAX / DAB+) waar onder meer Stijn Van De Voorde (For Those About To Rock) en Roos Van Acker (Jouw Tijdloze Ochtenradio) de pop- en rockgeschiedenis alle eer aandoen. Liefhebbers van nostalgische hits kunnen sindsdien afstemmen op deze volwassen geworden digitale stream om er vierentwintig uur per dag, zeven dagen per week de beste klassiekers te beluisteren.
GREAT GIGS IN THE PARK Tien extraordinaire concertavonden De Casino Concertzaal en het stadsbestuur Sint-Niklaas presenteren een derde editie van Great Gigs in the Park. Deze reeks openluchtconcerten, die plaatsvinden in de feeërieke setting van het historische Casino Park (DC terras), wordt dit jaar gespreid over drie weken (van woensdag 14 juni tot donderdag 6 juli) en bundelt in die periode tien extraordinaire openluchtshows op de Casino[1]kiosk. Gezelligheid is het codewoord tijdens Great Gigs in the Park, want voor elk concertavonden worden slechts 600 tickets aangeboden. Programma De line-up van Great Gigs in the Park biedt een staalkaart van waar de Casino voor staat, zijnde een veelheid aan uiteenlopende muziekgenres: van hardrock en post-metal over elektrofunk en groove tot roots en droompop. De Casino presenteert ook elke concertavond een uitgekiende support-act: laureaten van Lawijtstrijd, speerpunten uit de Brusselse elektrojazz-hype, punk-calamiteiten, een crossover tussen doom en oriëntal, maar ook western swing-adepten en singer-songwriters.

Pse Belgium news - De Avond van de Filmmuziek brengt een onvergetelijke ode aan cinema en series met iconische soundtracks
Een indrukwekkend orkest, (inter)nationale gasten en filmmuziek die generaties verbindt: De Avond van de Filmmuziek groeide gisterenavond opnieuw uit tot een groots audiovisueel spektakel waarin cinema, televisie en live muziek samensmolten tot één meeslepende belevenis in de AFAS Dome.
Samen met het Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra, koor Fine Fleur, de Backbone Band en dirigente Alexandra Arrieche nam presentator Aster Nzeyimana het publiek mee op een muzikale reis langs iconische films, geliefde series en hedendaagse klassiekers.
De setlist bracht een unieke mix van legendarische filmmuziek en verrassende hedendaagse composities. Zo passeerden onder meer The Untouchables, Saving Private Ryan, Out of Africa, Indiana Jones, Babygirl, La Vita e Bella, The Da Vinci Code, 12 Years a Slave en The Mission de revue. Ook populaire reeksen als Succession, Downton Abbey en The White Lotus kregen een prominente plaats.
Naast de grote klassiekers was er ook ruimte voor recente films en Belgische producties. De natuurdocumentairefilm Onze Natuur kreeg een bijzonder moment in de show, met componist Dirk Brossé als eregast in de zaal en op het podium. Hij onthulde dat hij momenteel met de composities voor de tweede film in de reeks bezig is. Ook de internationaal bekroonde Belgische film Baghdad Messi werd muzikaal in de kijker gezet door een imposante performance van Lieselot De Wilde en Ut-speler Tristan Driessens.
Het concert bracht daarnaast een reeks bijzondere gastoptredens samen. Sopraan Ella Taylor zorgde voor een indrukwekkende uitvoering van muziek uit The White Lotus en Babygirl, terwijl Stef Kamil Carlens een ingetogen versie van Mad World uit Donnie Darko bracht. Ibe Wuyts eerde Bruce Springsteen met Dancing in the Dark, Klaasje Meijer bracht The Mission op dwarsfluit en Tinne Oltmans sloot de avond groots af met Defying Gravity uit Wicked.
Ook acteur Olivier Richters – bekend van onder meer Indiana Jones – maakte zijn opwachting tijdens de show en zorgde samen met Aster Nzeyimana voor een humoristisch intermezzo dat op veel enthousiasme kon rekenen bij het publiek.
Met muziek van componisten als Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Thomas Newman, Lalo Schifrin en Kris Bowers bewees De Avond van de Filmmuziek opnieuw hoe krachtig filmmuziek emoties kan versterken en verhalen generaties lang kan doen nazinderen.

Geboren in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten uit Libanese ouders trok hij via de VS en Groot-Brittanië naar Dubai. In de internationale muziekscene staat zijn naam symbool voor originaliteit: een artiest die niet bang is om grenzen te vervagen, barrières te doorbreken en een nieuwe invulling te geven aan wat een dj-set kan zijn. Iets wat hij al meerdere keren op Tomorrowland kon bewijzen.

BELGISCHE METALTROTS CHANNEL ZERO KONDIGT GROOTSE SLOTSHOW AAN IN LOTTO ARENA ALS HOOGTEPUNT VAN MONUMENTALE CARRIÈRE
Goed nieuws voor alle fans van Channel Zero: de legendarische Belgische metalband kondigde zonet aan dat ze binnen exact één jaar, op zaterdag 5 december 2026, nog één keer groots zullen uitpakken met een allerlaatste arenashow, dit in de Lotto Arena te Antwerpen. Met dit concert zet de band een definitief punt achter meer dan drie decennia muziekgeschiedenis. Hun drie AB-shows later die maand zijn intussen volledig uitverkocht, dus dit is de allerlaatste kans voor fans om hen nog live aan het werk te zien.
De band bracht het nieuws op geheel eigen wijze én met een actuele knipoog naar de huidige Sinterklaasperiode. In een ludieke video verscheen frontman Franky De Smet-Van Damme als ‘Metal’-Sint om fans een laatste ultiem cadeau te geven: een finaal, groots arena-concert vooraleer ze er definitief mee stoppen. De aankondigingsvideo valt hier te bekijken.
Het concert in de Lotto Arena belooft het absolute hoogtepunt van hun carrière te worden en vormt tevens de feestelijke aftrap van hun allerlaatste tournee genaamd ‘The End Of An Era’, waarmee ze later die maand nog driemaal voor een uitverkochte AB in Brussel zullen staan. Dit arena-concert is daarmee de allerlaatste kans om de band nog live aan het werk te zien, voordat ze definitief afscheid nemen van het podium. Het wordt een onvergetelijke avond waarop ze al hun grootste hits ten gehore zullen brengen en voor de allerlaatste keer hun legendarische live-reputatie eer zullen aandoen, op het grote podium van een arena.
“Het wordt écht een finale show om niet te missen. Op 5 december gaan we nog eens alles geven en zorgen voor een onvergetelijk afscheid voor onze fans. Dit wordt een finale knaller, luider en grootser dan ooit,” zegt frontman Franky De Smet-Van Damme.
Channel Zero, opgericht in 1990 in Brussel, heeft decennialang de Belgische en internationale metalscene veroverd. Van hun doorbraakalbum Unsafe (1994) tot hun recente releases, de band staat bekend om energieke liveshows en een onvergetelijke sound. Na een pauze in 1997 keerden ze in 2010 terug voor een triomfantelijke reünie, goed voor zes uitverkochte AB-shows en meer dan 12.000 concertgangers. Hun in 2021 verschenen album Feed ’em With a Brick – destijds het eerste nieuwe album in 15 jaar - werd meteen omarmd door zowel pers als publiek. Sindsdien veroverden ze opnieuw de metalpodia in België en Europa, en bevestigden ze hun status als absolute live-legendes.
Volgend jaar neemt Channel Zero definitief afscheid van het podium, maar op zaterdag 5 december 2026 krijgen fans nog een laatste kans om de band live op het grote podium van een arena te ervaren in de Lotto Arena in Antwerpen. Een finaal groots concert om meer dan drie decennia aan metalgeschiedenis te vieren!

Na zijn succesvolle optreden in de Lotto Arena in juni 2025 keert Morrissey op donderdag 31 december 2026 terug naar België voor een uniek concert. Hij nodigt zijn fans namelijk uit om in stijl en op spectaculaire wijze oudejaarsavond te vieren in Vorst Nationaal in Brussel ! Deze exclusieve show, die een bijzonder live optreden combineert met een unieke countdown naar middernacht én een balloon drop, belooft alvast alles wat nodig is voor een onvergetelijke start van het nieuwe jaar. Een unieke kans voor Belgische fans om 2027 samen met Morrissey in te luiden. Dit wil je écht niet missen!
MORRISSEY - TICKETS
De deuren openen om 21u00, en Morrissey betreedt het podium rond 22u30. Na het concert en het vieringsmoment om middernacht, nemen dj’s het over en gaat het feest door tot 03u00. Zo wordt Vorst Nationaal dé plek voor een onvergetelijke oudejaarsnacht!
Dit oudejaarsavond-event biedt veel meer dan zomaar een concert. In de exclusieve setting van Vorst Nationaal zullen fans een zorgvuldig samengestelde avond beleven rond het iconische repertoire van Morrissey, met als hoogtepunt een gezamenlijk countdownmoment om middernacht. Wanneer de klok twaalf uur slaat, gaat de viering verder met een feestelijke balloon-drop die 2027 op unieke wijze inluidt.
Na het concert gaat de avond verder met een DJ-set die de energie hoog houdt en het feest zal laten verdergaan tot 03u00 ‘s nachts. Deze unieke combinatie van een legendarische live show en een volledige oudejaarsbeleving maakt van dit event een uitzonderlijk moment op de Belgische concertkalender.
De invloed en muzikale erfenis van Morrissey zijn onmiskenbaar. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de meest invloedrijke figuren in de Britse popmuziek en een van de grootste songwriters van zijn generatie. Morrissey heeft 25 top 10-albums in het Verenigd Koninkrijk behaald: 15 solo en 10 met The Smiths. Hij ontving een Ivor Novello Award voor zijn uitzonderlijke bijdrage aan de Britse muziek.
Toen de debuutsingle van The Smiths, “Hand In Glove”, verscheen, veranderde het muzikale landschap ingrijpend en ontstond een catalogus met iconische nummers zoals “This Charming Man”, “How Soon Is Now?” en “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”. In zijn solocarrière bouwde Morrissey verder op dat succes met nummers als “Suedehead”, “Everyday Is Like Sunday”, “Irish Blood, English Heart” en “First of the Gang to Die”, naast vele andere.
Zijn nieuwste album, Make-up is a Lie, is het vijfde opeenvolgende album dat in Frankrijk werd opgenomen, waarover hij zegt: "Music should be the ultimate democracy, with no limitations, and the best of it is not easily categorised. In 2027, 25 jaar na hun laatste passage, keert MANOWAR eindelijk terug naar België met hun ‘KINGS OF METAL – FIGHTING THE WORLD TOUR 2027’ : op woensdag 10 maart 2027 strijkt de heavy metalband neer in de AFAS Dome in Antwerpen voor een exclusieve Benelux-arenashow, die de fundamenten van True Metal opnieuw zal doen daveren !
In 1980 stormde MANOWAR als een nieuwe kracht de metalscene binnen en schreef meteen geschiedenis. Chinese American Bear, the duo of Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten, today announce their new album Dim Sum & Then Some, due out May 8th via Moshi Moshi Records. The announcement arrives alongside the release of groovy, buoyant lead single "All The People (所有人)." The album is a positive and lighthearted collage of the duo's life together - exploring all the things they love: food, appreciating small joys, the Chinese-American upbringing, love, and fairy tales.
All The People (所有人) is probably my favorite song on the album," Barsten says. "It’s so fun, light, cool, and a little weird. It’s a song for everyone. All the people. It has some fantasy vibes, musically and lyrically."
The track is also accompanied by a video directed by Barsten–he explains:
“The original idea for this music video was to build giant costumes for people to wear, but that quickly became too ambitious of an idea, haha. Then it dawned on me one day to use puppets! It'd still have that tactile/physical feeling, and I could have multiple characters. I made it in my parents basement actually, which feels hilarious to say. I felt like a little 12 year old gremlin, working every day in the depths of the basement.”
“The ‘La La’ characters are all stop motion, frame-by-frame, and then hand puppets are filmed live. I honestly didn't even write out a script or anything for this. I just knew I wanted the puppets singing in a theatre, I wanted the ‘La La’ characters to be like these goofy squads of backup singers, and I wanted puppets to shoot beams of light out of their mouths that turn into a heart for the final build of the song. I had like two tiny lights my dad gave me to light the puppets, but mostly just used the overhead lights in the basement. The whole thing is real DIY, like most things we make, but I put a lot of love and time into giving it life. I think with the coming of AI, it feels even better to make things like this. To be hunched over in my parents basement for hours, excited and inspired, using my hands, and brain.”
Tong expands on the inspiration behind the track: "When Bryce first showed me the sounds for 'All The People', it immediately reminded me of a fantastical setting with castles and fairies so I leaned in that direction with the lyrics. It was fun to write about a topic we hadn’t explored much before. I’ve written a lot on our favorite foods and Chinese culture but hadn’t explored much fantasy. We’re actually both huge fans of fantasy in general (Bryce puts on the Lord of the Rings movies at least twice a month in our household, it’s his comfort background noise). I also recently started getting into 'Romantasy' (A Court of Thorns and Roses, Fourth Wing, etc.) so I was also in that mindset."
The sounds on Dim Sum... are more musically dense and exploratory, marking a sonic evolution for the duo. The band finds themselves delving much further into experimental territory, while also incorporating more traditional pop elements than they ever have. There's a nice mix of sonics on this album, featuring warbly guitars, hints of psychedelia, pop, disco, and strings, while also incorporating synth driven, electronic, sounds, as well as droney, hypnotic elements. The LP is a true reflection of the Chinese American Bear ethos: open, curious, and lighthearted.

Chinese American Bear Bio:
As Chinese American Bear, married musicians Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten know that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. “I remember learning a little Chinese for when I first met Anne’s family, and it was so amazing that you don’t say ‘how are you?’ or ‘what’s going on?’ when you’re greeting someone, you say ‘have you eaten yet?’” Barsten smiles. So when his previous band disbanded and he and Tong started working on music together for the first time, the Seattle-based duo turned to that intimacy and warmth to lyrically match the musical soup of Flaming Lips, Beach Boys, Bee Gees, B-52’s, and Teletubbies that they had been cooking up, peppering their songs with food references to reinforce the filling emotional resonance. And through that fusion, Chinese American Bear started writing music that exposes new listeners to Chinese flavors in their indie pop delicacy and provides a sumptuously nostalgic glow for countless fans in the Asian diaspora who had been craving representation.
“When we started this project, we never intended to have me sing in Chinese, or even for me to sing at all!” Tong laughs. At first, the songs were a pandemic project, Tong just being a “supportive partner” helping Barsten with some ideas and teaching him how to speak a bit of Chinese. But the further along the songs got, the more confident Barsten felt that his wife’s voice just made everything sound better. While she studied classical piano through college, Tong had never trained as a vocalist or sung in a band, but somehow it just fit.
After moving to the US in elementary school, Tong grew up with a complex relationship to her heritage. She spoke Chinese at home, but she sometimes felt embarrassed to speak it in public. “Kids of immigrants often just want to fit in, to assimilate, especially in school. Japan really exported their culture in the '90s, and in the last 10 to 15 years Korean culture has become huge,” she says. “But we’ve heard from so many fans that hearing me sing in Chinese has made them feel proud to speak Chinese for the first time.” But Chinese American Bear isn’t standing as some self-serious cultural icon. Instead, many of Tong’s lyrics are joyously direct and full of references to dumplings, noodles, and boba tea, both because food is so central to the culture and it’s the perfect way to tap into the nostalgic joy of that special cuisine. “It’s also true that I have a limited vocabulary in Chinese and we love to eat, so it just makes sense,” Tong laughs.
On their single “Take Me To Beijing”, the ties to China hit an even more sentimental root. Built on a clap-along beat, burbling electronics, and washes of synth, Barsten’s composition feels like Architecture in Helsinki by way of Beach House, while Tong’s lyrics recall her beloved childhood summer trips to visit family. “Take me to your hometown/ Let’s drink some oolong tea/ Show me where you first loved/ Show me your family,” she glows, grabbing onto her memories and sharing them with the listener through each new sensation. “I've had Chinese-American fans tell me that the song has made them tear up a little bit, feel emotional,” Tong says proudly.
While that emotional reaction may be a surprise for listeners who first find themselves just grooving to the pristine indie pop, Chinese American Bear’s very existence remains an unexpected adventure for its members. “We truly never set out to be in a band together, and we almost approached it at first as a bit of silly fun,” Tong says. “It was a way to try something “alternative ''after a lifetime of classical music and a strict upbringing pushed towards a traditional career path. And for Bryce it was a way to reset his approach towards songwriting and find his original child-like joy in creating music after spending several intense years in a band that he took much too seriously..” But now that the couple are fully leaning into the project, they’re finding that their fun and passion are joined beautifully in the adventure.
Barsten, meanwhile, grew up on a llama farm in Washington state, playing in a long-running string of folk and rock bands. He and Tong met in high school in Spokane, and dated through college and post-grad time in New York and Chicago before getting married in 2018. And whenever Barsten’s bands weren’t busy in that long stretch, he taught himself how to produce and took odd jobs producing and mixing for other bands. That diverse experience helped him achieve a sound at once immediately familiar and dizzyingly new for Chinese American Bear.
After releasing their first self-titled album Chinese American Bear on their own in 2022, Chinese American Bear first signed to a label in China, while simultaneously building a fervent following in the United States and Europe. They then signed with Moshi Moshi who released their sophomore album Wah!!! in 2024 and are set to release their third album Dim Sum & Then Some in May 2026.
Complete with mascot-headed dancers, backup vocalists, and endless enthusiasm, the band’s concerts have been compared to punk shows for toddlers. “We wish we had a budget for a full on giant noodle monster to take the stage. Flaming Lips-esque,” Barsten says. “We just constantly embarrass ourselves on stage in the best way, trying to keep that levity and goofiness.” Consistent with the rest of Chinese American Bear’s work, even that levity has a purpose: bringing a burst of childlike wonder. And by bringing that joy to audiences alongside Tong’s memories and heritage, it feels all the more real. Every slurp of noodles and sip of tea feels at once like a misty ideal and immediate reality translated through Barsten’s immaculately dreamy compositions. "Recording in our little home studio, we could write about what makes us smile on any particular day: food, love, friends, and funny bits about our lives," Tong says. "We are so excited to share that, to play these songs live and put on crazy concerts with an army of dancing dumplings."

Het Ierse drietal KNEECAP begon in 2017 als een DIY-project van DJ Próvaí en rappers Mo Chara en Móglaí Bap. Intussen groeiden ze uit tot een internationale beweging, met rauwe energie, Ierse taal en scherpe maatschappijkritiek als handelsmerk. Ze mengen hiphop, rave en politieke statements moeiteloos tot een unieke sound. In 2024 verrasten ze met 'Kneecap', een autobiografische film over hun prille carrière, die goed onthaald werd en in de prijzen viel. Met 'FENIAN' brachten ze vorige vrijdag een splinternieuw album uit. Dankzij de hulp van producer Dan Carey (Fontaines D.C., Kae Tempest, Wet Leg) werd het een verschroeiend album dat flirt met duisternis, maar tegelijkertijd barst van licht en verbeelding. Ze bevestigen zich opnieuw als een van de meest authentieke en creatieve acts van hun generatie.
