Western Vinyl announces Passages: Artists in Solidarity with Immigrants, Refugees, and Asylum Seekers, with the first two singles: "No More Darkness" by Alan Sparkhawk (Low)and "A Place for Us" by Benjamin Booker. The album is set for a December 5th release .
The album includes original songs from Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), Dirty Projectors, Alan Sparhawk, Tim Heidecker, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Y La Bamba, William Tyler, Lambchop, Lonnie Holley, St. Panther, among others.
All proceeds will benefit two Texas-based organizations, American Gateways and Casa Marianella, providing no-to-low-cost legal services, food, shelter, access to health care, and other essential services to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. On December 4th, organizers will hold a live variety show and raffle/auction hosted by comedian and Passagesartist Tim Heidecker on his call-in show Office Hours to further support the two organizations.
Passages asked artists to write and record a song in a place that feels like home. Captured through home studio set-ups and even phones, the recordings are beautiful and raw, reflecting the immediacy and uncertainty of this moment.
“Home, as we know it, is under threat,” say Passages producers and organizers Emilie Rex and Rick Alverson. “When immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers exercise their human right to safe passage, they defend our ability to do so—and our right to be and feel at home.”
The album will be released digitally, and as a limited-edition LP on Western Vinyl. A limited deluxe edition will include liner notes by 2024 National Book Award Winner Jason De León(Soldiers and Kings), and poetry from National Book Critics Circle Award Winner Ross Gay(Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude). Both editions include photography from Pulitzer Foundation Grant Awardee Greg Constantine. Artist Reena Saini Kallat created the piece featured on the cover. The artwork is from the series Ruled Paper (red, blue, white) which depicts contested geographies around the world.
On "No More Darkness," Alan Sparhawk shares: “Here is a song that came from the struggle to know what to say to someone who is having a hard time. There are real things that we can do to lift each other out of suffering-–sometimes it is tangible charity, like this compilation to raise funds and awareness for the plight of immigrants and those who have been displaced. Sometimes it is words of encouragement. It can also just be time spent with someone who needs help getting through the moment. Let’s do our best to turn up the light.”
On "A Place For Us," Benjamin Booker shares: “The human struggle is a family struggle. We rise together and we suffer together. There are so many things out of our control, but we can always open our hearts to love and understanding. May you find light in the darkness.”
“No More Darkness” holds the horror of this moment in balance with the intimacy and possibility of solidarity and community. On “A Place for Us,” Booker weaves punk urgency and gospel warmth, echoing the central theme of Passages: the idea of home under threat, and the fight to preserve it. As with all tracks on Passages, these artists composed and recorded their songs in a place that felt like home–as a celebration and in defense of our human right to safety, security, and freedom of movement.
All labor—producing, mixing, mastering, and design—and costs associated with the record were donated or fundraised separately to ensure all proceeds go directly to American Gateways and Casa Marianella.
“Passages is a celebration of work in progress—the immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers struggling on the frontlines; the organizations supporting them; everyone out there defending human dignity in the face of persistent cruelty,” say the organizers. “But it’s also an invitation to do more, to join a local organization defending our neighbors, to call our representatives, to have those hard talks with our family members.
