Guedra Guedra, the alias of Morocco's Abdellah M. Hassak, released his album MUTANT, an epic fusion of cutting-edge electronic sounds and deeply researched musical traditions from across the African continent, last year on Smugglers Way, Domino's dance music imprint. The record was praised as "one of the year's most forward-thinking dancefloor records" (Discogs) and "a class in African instrumentation, rhythmic and spiritual tradition, and music history" (OkayAfrica), and its vibrant lead single "Drift of Drummer" caught the attention of the New York Times, who hailed it as "a cauldron of rhythms, humanized by snippets of speaking voices." Today, ahead of a round of summer touring starting with an appearance at Barcelona's Primavera Sound in June, Guedra Guedra shares a new remix of "Drift of Drummer" by Domino labelmates Animal Collective.

"The act of remixing is a form of sonic alchemy," says Abdellah. "It takes a raw musical material and transforms it into something entirely different where the original essence remains perceptible only as a trace, yet the listening experience drifts into another universe. This remix of 'Drift of Drummer' shifts the tribal, hypnotic world of Guedra Guedra into the psychedelic folk cosmos of Animal Collective, a band I deeply admire. What emerges is not a cover nor a reinterpretation but a genuine dialogue between two distinct galaxies, where roots extend into new soil, memory meets mutation, and the unfamiliar becomes deeply coherent."

Animal Collective's Avey Tare says, "The elements of trance and repetition across different styles and forms of African music has interested and influenced myself and Animal Collective since our very early days. It's collaborations like this remix that offer a chance to blend and meld what I've discovered over the years with another musician's explorations, creating something totally new but rooted in techniques and sonics that somehow feel familiar and universal."
