Vooraf - De uit Berlijn afkomstige alt-indie groep Mighty Oaks kwam terug met een gloednieuwe track “Mexico”, afkomstig van het komend gelijknamig album. Puttend uit een myriade van invloeden van indie, pop, folk en soul, levert het ongelijksoortige trio, afkomstig uit respectievelijk Amerika, Engeland en Italië, een escapistische, positieve boodschap op die nieuwe single, de perfecte adempauze in deze vluchtige maatschappij …
Naar aanleiding van deze release, hadden we een leuk gesprek met Claudio Donzelli; natuurlijk hadden we het ook over het leven in corona tijden  en de toekomstplannen. Het interview kun je hier nog eens nalezen .

Iets later verscheen het album …In herfst-wintertijd straalt de plaat vooral dat zonnige, onbezorgde uit dat je terugvindt aan een strand ver verwijderd van de harde realiteit, zonder echt al te kitsch of zeemzoeterig te klinken.
“Land of Broken Dreams” en “Mexico” zijn als openers fijne pijlers.  . Op “Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” klinkt het meer weemoedig. Het toont de subtilteit en veelzijdigheid aan van de band. Knap.
Het variërende aanbod (ingetogen – groovy) klinkt overtuigend. . “My Demons” en “Heavy” gaan in de richting van Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young,  Een vergelijking die meermaals opborrelt, door een melanchool folky sfeertje. Luister maar naar “Gold to me” en afsluiter “Deadman's Island”.
En toch … ondanks de variatie is er die eenduidige , gezapige toer die het album, 'Mexico'; dreigt op te gaan . Het enige minpunt …

Berlin based Alt-indie outfit, Mighty Oaks, return with a brand new track 'Mexico’, lifted from the band's forthcoming album due this summer through Howl Records.
Drawing on a myriad of influences from indie, pop, folk and soul, the disparate trio, hailing from America, England and Italy respectively, deliver an escapist, positive message on new single 'Mexico', offering us the perfect respite we all need right now. Following this release, we had a nice conversation with Claudio Donzelli .
Of course, we also talked about life in these times and future plans.

Mighty Oaks were founded in 2010 and are based in Berlin. According to Allmusic, the group performs "tight, three-part harmonies and exuberant, largely acoustic folk songs." Agreed, or not?
Wow, are we on Allmusic? Is it still a thing? I thought it was some experiment of the 2000s (laughs). Yeah, I think it still represents us pretty well!

Haha nice! What is the story behind the band name?
There’s an English proverb that goes “mighty oaks from little acorns grow”. We thought it was representative of what we were trying to do as we moved the first steps as a band: join forces to make something bigger than we could have achieved on our own.

After releasing your debut album ‘Howl’ in 2014, you had the opportunity of touring with Milky Chance and performing at many festivals. Can we speak of a milestone here which opened many doors?
We had already toured Europe extensively when Milky Change invited us to join them for part of the tour in the US. In Europe things were going already pretty well but for the US market definitely, that was a milestone. We got to play in front of many people in some of the best venues over there.

What are the other big milestones for the band?
We started with a big milestone! In June 2013, before we even recorded our first album, we got to play in front of 22k people before Kings of Leon in Berlin. That was and still is the biggest show we ever played. It was awesome.

Are there also low points in all these years?
Since the pandemic hit in March 2020, of course, it’s been quite hard for us, like for other musicians. We had to give up what we loved the most doing, which is playing shows. There have been moments of despair as it wasn’t clear at all when we would be able to play shows again.

What is the biggest change in these more than ten years within this music world, besides digitalization and the power of social media?
What sticks out for me is the merging of all music genres. The amount of promiscuity in terms of genre, style is mind-blowing and that’s extremely healthy for our culture. Another thing that I noticed is that there are many mainstreams now, which I think it’s interesting and also good for our culture.

Did you have any sort of inspiration while growing up from any certain artists or genres? Have those inspirations helped influence the sound or style of Mighty Oaks in any way?
Personally, I’ve always been into bands, form the 90s, throughout the 2000s. Radiohead, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Athlete, Snow Patrol, etc. I’ve always been fascinated by the orchestration of guitars in the context of bands. I think Radiohead did it better than others in their first 3 albums and I think that still plays a role in my musical voice.

The reason for this interview is the new record 'Mexico', the process of writing songs and releasing this record has been different because of corona, did that influence the writing process?
Definitely, this album is and will always be connected to the Corona pandemic. It’s a crisis that invested everyone no-one excluded. We wrote in response to what was going on last year.

Together,  you guys decided to record the songs in Hooper’s home studio, Recording at home, in this make-shift basement studio, was a little adventure in itself. True?
Absolutely. It’s been a first time for us and it’s been a lot of fun too! There is a deeper sense of care and ownership that feels really good. We basically lived together for about 6 weeks, working, hanging out and eating together for a whole day at Ian’s place and then home to our families for the night. It was a really nice time.

How have you as a band, musician and also as a human being survived these rather 'strange' times until now?
Music! Music kept us focused and sane during this crazy time.

How do you personally think that the music to culture sector will survive these times?
It will survive where there is understanding that culture is a valuable thing, that makes sense to invest on. It will survive with investments taken from the nations’ budgets to support lockdown and reopening. In some places it will suffer more than in others, I’m afraid. Culture cannot be only measured with economic parameters. Culture can be extremely inefficient from an economic point of view. Still we recognize its vital importance for humanity.

I have listened to the record. I think it's a very dreamy, somewhat melancholic record with a dark side but also light-footed, a beautiful flirting between dark and light. agree? Your opinion please?
All that, I agree with you! It’s a broad spectrum of human emotions.

What are your personal expectations about this new album?
We always hope that a new album will find its listeners, will grow in them and will bring them to our shows to celebrate live with us. It’s sending music into the world so that it will send people to us. It’s a wonderful cycle that we hope to do again and again.

Live performances are out of the question for the time being, but are there any tour plans?
Yes! We’re planning a European Tour for Spring 2022! All dates have been announced and tickets are already selling on our website mightyoaksmusic.com

A possible performance via live streaming? And what is your opinion about this phenomenon?
It all started with Chris Martin doing a couple of live streaming performances on Instagram thoughts “why not?”. I thought it was cool, but then there was this huge gap between some really bad quality performance and some other people who thought “wait a second, maybe we can produce them better and charge people for it!”. Interesting phenomenon but not really attractive for us. We haven’t done anything like that, we didn’t feel like to be honest. We’ve been busy making new music and at home with our families and there was little space for anything else.

What are the further plans (as far as plans can be made)?
We hope to be able to play some open-air shows this summer and to get back to writing new material in the fall.

After all these years, are there still any goals or ambitions, or are you not working on them?
It’s only been 7 years and 4 albums since our debut, I feel we’re still a relatively young band which is exploring and evolving album after album. The main ambition is to be able to do this over and over again.
