Danny Blue is een Antwerpse alternatieve indie-rockband die haar oorsprong vindt op de middelbare school, waar ze onder de naam Danny Blue and the Old Socks het levenslicht zag. Geïnspireerd door de 21e-eeuwse golf van eclectische indie rock wist het viertal in 2017 voor het eerst de aandacht te trekken met hun EP 'Backyard Days' en publieksfavoriet 'Belgian Venice'.
In de jaren die volgden speelde de band talrijke shows in uiteenlopende bezettingen en verscheen in 2020 de EP 'BOYS'. Tegelijkertijd groeide bij de bandleden de behoefte om hun eigen artistieke pad te verkennen. De bijkomende druk van de COVID-periode leidde uiteindelijk tot een tijdelijke stilte.
Vijf jaar later keert Danny Blue terug naar de oorspronkelijke vierkoppige bezetting. Het collectieve songwritingproces staat opnieuw centraal en brengt de band dichter dan ooit bij haar essentie. Hun vernieuwde geluid zoekt het spanningsveld op tussen verleden en toekomst. Shoegaze-texturen en grunge-catharsis vloeien samen met een eigenzinnige indie-rockenergie. Dromerig maar ruw, nostalgisch maar vooruitstrevend. De naamsinkorting symboliseert die evolutie: een bewuste stap vooruit, met respect voor waar het allemaal begon.
De eerste single Tears is geen klaagzang, maar een innerlijke schreeuw. Een moment van confrontatie waarin je niet langer zeker weet wie je bent of waar je naartoe gaat. Waar dromen en sterren ooit richting gaven, groeit het besef dat niet alles voorbestemd is. Tears vangt die twijfel: een luide uitbarsting tijdens een stille strijd tussen vasthouden en loslaten.

Soms mag het al eens simpelweg melancholisch zijn. Speelkleeren is een nummer dat sferisch begint en dan langzaamaan opbouwt tot een dromerig spel van alviool, drum en bas. Het is een instrumentale terugblik op een - schijnbaar - onbezorgde kindertijd en de manier waarop je herinneringen vormt. In Speelkleeren neemt Foutloos de tijd. Geen wilde golven dit keer, maar zacht kabbelen.
In de video zie je Esther, Renaud en Jonas in speelkleren, twee decennia geleden. Het is een compilatie van oude VHS-cassettes, zo gemonteerd dat de herinneringen vervagen, vermengen en vervormen. Net als het nummer verkent de videoclip hoe het geheugen van je jeugd een eigen constructie maakt.
ᖴOᑌTᒪOOᔕ is een instrumentaal trio dat bestaat uit Esther Coorevits (Tourist LeMC, Nemø ensemble), Jonas Bruyneel (momoyo, Philemon, Vincent Coomans) en Renaud Debruyne (Mirek Coutigny, Mergel). In Foutloos gaan sferische improvisaties op altviool samen met funky baslijnen en snedige hiphopgrooves. Foutloos speelde shows in België, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk en is in 2026 artist in residence in De Grote Post.

Belgian pianist and composer Grégoire Gerstmans has, for several years now, been developing an intimate and minimalist musical language centered around piano and silence. Following his debut album Hypnagogie (2024), he today releases Ceux qui restent — the first single from his second album Éternité, set for release on October 9, 2026 — as he'll be performing three times (!) at BRDCST on April 3, 4, and 5, 2026.
While on Hypnagogie, Grégoire Gerstmans paid tribute to the state between wakefulness and sleep — that fragile moment where reality and dreams intertwine — he explores time and presence on Éternité. Composed of eight minimalist pieces, the album invites listeners to slow down, inhabit each moment, and listen to silence. The first highlighted track, Ceux qui restent, pays tribute to those who remain when someone disappears — a gesture of care and presence.
The order of the tracks follows an almost symbolic temporality on this new album. This fifth piece represents a central moment in the record:
"Ceux qui restent is a tribute to a very dear friend who recently passed away. My wife and I were invited to his bedside — a moment suspended in time. We shared his most precious memories, and he took the time to offer us a rare gift: the strength of the present moment. Every small detail of life he left us — a vegetable in the sunlight, a passing fly, a scent, a country, a drop of rain — becomes a treasure. These simple moments, what remains of him, I dedicate to all those who continue their journey after the loss of a loved one.
The piece reminds us that every moment of life is a precious gift. I played it on my small piano at home, with a sound I chose and love. Through it, I share what I received: that fragile and infinite intensity that life offers us.
To you, my friend, and to you, the love of my life, I dedicate these notes and silences, these suspended moments. May Ceux qui restent be a bridge between memory and present, a breath of emotion that travels through time. May those who remain find in this piece tenderness, strength, and the beauty of small moments. It is not just a melody, but a gift from the heart, received and passed on. It is the echo of what we have lived together and what continues to live within us. Every moment, every breath, every detail carries the trace of those we love. And in this way, despite absence, those who remain carry forever what has been given."
Recorded once again in his studio, the album continues Grégoire Gerstmans' artistic approach: a refined, stripped-down music in which every note matters and where silence becomes an essential element of the musical language.
"Time that passes, time that flows through us, time we believe we possess but which constantly escapes us. I like to think that time itself is eternal. The share we give to it is simply human. Today, time has become something dark. We measure it, we consume it, we buy it. We get paid for time. It has become our primary currency. And yet, we no longer have any. We no longer have time for ourselves, for our loved ones, for our families. No more time to look up at the sky. No more time to breathe. No more time to simply be. To be here, now. In the present. Because perhaps eternity lies precisely there: in that moment. Time is eternity. Let us take it."
Between Hypnagogie and Éternité, his work continues the same quest: to explore those suspended moments of existence when time seems to slow down — when we fall asleep, or when we finally take the time to be present.

In the spring of 1971, somewhere between Brussels, Paris and a collective pop fever dream, Le Monde Fabuleux des Yamasuki landed on vinyl. It sounded like nothing else then and it still does not today. More than half a century later, Sdban Records proudly presents a reissue of this singular cult album on vinyl.
The album was produced by Jean Kluger and written both by Jean and Daniel Vangarde (aka Bangalter, later the father of Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk), who were already well ahead of their time, long before electronic music rewrote the rules of pop culture.
Released under the name Yamasuki, also referred to as The Yamasuki Singers, or The Yamasuki's, the project was never intended as a conventional band. It was a studio-born fantasy, a concept album disguised as a pop record. What began as a standalone single quickly expanded into a full-blown pan-cultural pop opera that ignored genres and common sense with joyful abandon.
Musically, the album sits at a delirious crossroads. Psychedelic pop collides with funk rhythms, samba and bubblegum melodies, full of chants and choruses in a phonetic pseudo Japanese, written with the help of a dictionary. Kluger and Vangarde famously recruited a children's choir to perform the vocals, and for added spectacle, they brought in a Japanese judo grandmaster, whose ritualistic shouts and battle cries erupt throughout the record.
Several singles were released. One of them, Yamasuki, with accompanying dance move, appeared in the United Kingdom and France on John Peel's Dandelion label, a fitting home for a record that thrived on the margins of pop culture. Its B-side, Aieaoa, proved even more potent. In 1975, the song was reborn as A.I.E. (A Mwana) by Black Blood, an African group recording in Belgium, this time sung in Swahili. That melody would travel even further.
Aie a Mwana became the debut single of English pop group Bananarama, and in 2010 it resurfaced once more as Helele, an official song of the FIFA World Cup, recorded by South African singer Velile Mchunu with Danish percussion duo Safri Duo. That version became the most widely known incarnation of the song. With Jean Kluger directly involved, it was less a cover than a continuation of the original idea.
The album's afterlife did not stop there. Over the years, Yamasuki has been quietly sampled, covered, and featured across media far beyond the realm of novelty pop. Kono Samourai was sampled in The Healer by Erykah Badu (2007), produced by Madlib, while Yama Yama has found its way into recent pop culture as well: appearing in the television series Fargo, on Angus Stone's project Dope Lemon, and on the 2008 Late Night Tales compilation curated by Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. Proof, if any were needed, that this strange little record carries a deeper musical DNA than its playful exterior might suggest.
This new reissue of Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki proves the renewed interest and respect for this cult album, faithful to the original spirit while finally giving it back the physical presence it deserves. In an era obsessed with genres and algorithmic neatness, Yamasuki still laughs, dances and karate-kicks its way past definitions.
It reminds us that pop music can be playful without being disposable, strange without being cynical and joyful without explanation. The world of Yamasuki was always fabulous, we are just lucky it found its way back to us.

Part satire, part dancefloor weapon, it is intentionally over-the-top via a unique collision of cultures (European industrial roots, Japanese pop references, metal drums and guitars) and production aesthetics that are all wrapped up with the group's unmistakable provocative edge.

'Karaoke Superstar' is the first in a series of singles to be released ahead of a long-awaited seventh Lords Of Acid album in late 2026. Further notable guest vocalists will appear, although the majority of songs feature the powerhouse voice of the reigning 'Acid Queen', Carla Harvey. Also renowned for her commanding stage presence, the distinctive US singer joined the group in early 2025. She was previously in the metal band Butcher Babies.

Debuting with the classic New Beat single 'I Sit On Acid', their debut album 'Lust' appeared in 1991 and was followed periodically by further releases that saw the group become a staple of the Billboard dance and alternative charts. Belfast trio KNEECAP have today shared the video for their latest single, FENIAN, the title-track from their forthcoming new album, to be released on May 1 via Heavenly Recordings.
The anthemic track already feels like it's been here for an entire era – a raucous party tune that will no doubt birth some of the biggest festival singalong chants of the summer, this is a brilliant, invigorating, unapologetic declaration of identity and community. Tiochfaidh ár lá - somebody sample that.
Talking about the track, KNEECAP said: "An Anthem to embrace our Fenian past, and to cure our colonial hangover by reconnecting the warriors of Irish folklore with the Fenian c*nts from the North of Ireland.
The track is accompanied by a brilliantly surreal video shot in and around West Belfast which sees DJ Provai's now ubiquitous tricolour balaclava very much front and centre.. The video was directed by Thomas James, who added: "For me, this track is about a reclaiming of identity. Not only of the word, but for people too. Which is what our film is. A trippy whirlwind through people and places who embody the spirit of the boys and the song. Of seeing the word Fenian through a new lens. It was a blast. It was chaos. From the rich tradition of expansive art-rock that has long flowed out of mainland Europe, the much-loved and critically acclaimed Ghinzu today continue their return with the release of their second single, Snow White, taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album and first in 17 years (!), W.O.W.A, due for release via Play It Again Sam on May 29th, 2026.
Snow White is a triptych about addiction, using three interwoven stories. Frontman John Descamps explains, "The first tackles addiction to computer screens and social media. The second story contrasts this with drug addiction. And the third focuses on Snow White – you're poisoned with an apple and wake up with love. But it's more about flashes, just an image in your head. The three of them play together in one song."
A song that revels in creative freedom, Snow White refuses to sit in one place. "Indie rock, by definition, involves manipulating references. And that means you can take folk, you can take punk, and you can take electronic, and everything comes together through a type of raw freedom. And I think this is the music we do."
From selling more than 100,000 copies of their breakthrough second album Blow across Europe, to sharing stages with the likes of Muse, Placebo and Iggy & The Stooges, and seeing their music featured on the soundtrack of the global hit film 'Taken', Ghinzu have long stood as one of Belgium's most iconic rock exports.
The forthcoming record W.O.W.A, has been a work in progress for some time, with Ghinzu having written almost 90 fully fledged ideas for their new album, before whittling this down to the final tracklisting. "We had all these hard drives everywhere," recalls Descamps. "We wanted to gather 10 tracks together to really represent all those years of condensed work."
The results take Ghinzu back to basics, before blasting them into uncharted territories. Their formative influences - the energy and expression of Queen; the raucous grunge noise of Nirvana and The Melvins – remain, alongside their passion for visual art. Name-checking the painters Gerhard Richter and Francis Bacon as points of inspiration, they stepped back from their perfectionist leanings to embrace music at its most raw and powerful.
Sessions took place at a multitude of studios. Ghinzu worked in their native Belgium and across the Atlantic in New York; they secluded themselves in the countryside, and worked at studios overlooking the sea. "Our plan was to drift away, creating 'evolutive songs' that could change from one week to another, or simply disappear to maybe reappear. Doubts have less room within such space, as there is nothing to finish. What is left are the survivors of that period, the wild ones who got captured."
From first to last, these are stories built by older musicians, people with experience and maturity. "It's about telling very specific stories in a way that is universal," he says. "There's an almost confrontational aspect with regards to age. We're developing an intergenerational feel in bringing these stories out of specific narratives and pushing them into different spaces."

De Brits-Cyprische Artemas Diamandis brengt pas sinds 2020 muziek uit, maar wist op korte tijd een indrukwekkend palmares op te bouwen. The latest single END TO KNOWING YOU, is a sensual elegy straddling the edge between toxic and unrelenting love. It exists in the space between desire and detachment, where bodies ache to merge but timelines fracture on impact. This is not a love song, but a spiritual confession, a map of magnetism, gravitational obsession, telepathy, and spiritual polarity. The track reflects psychic recursion, ecstatic polarity, and erotic grief, exploring love that cannot be lived but will not dissolve. As the laws of energetics go, nothing truly ends—it only transforms. Like a mantra, she sings: "I can let it go, I can let it go... but there is no end to knowing you."
The video was conceived by KÁRYYN and directed by Jenna Marsh - whose work includes collaborations with Charli XCX and Eartheater - and was produced by Black Dog Films, part of Ridley Scott's production company. The new album is a body of work distilled from years of lived exploration into existence, intimacy, and time, where sound becomes the structure through which truth is communicated. KÁRYYN's voice is the gravitational centre, carrying both weight and fragility as it shapes the record's sonic world.

Cass McCombs – whose work New York Magazine has praised as "smart, wise, playful, literary, and often funny" – has announced a new split 7" with Hand Habits, the project of Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Meg Duffy.
The release pairs two new tracks: McCombs' "Seeing The Elephant" and Hand Habits' "Good Person," and will be issued via Domino and Fat Possum. McCombs' "Seeing The Elephant" arrives today alongside a video directed by Larry Unrein.
A limited-edition 7" vinyl pressing will be available exclusively on McCombs' Interior Live Oak Live North American tour.

The Interior Live Oak Live tour kicked off March 19 in New York City. At the opening show, comedian Adam Friedland introduced McCombs with a bold declaration: "In my opinion, Cass McCombs is the greatest singer-songwriter in the world." Stereogum was in attendance and later shared a live clip, writing: "The veteran musician made a compelling case for the superlative at LPR, delivering a revelatory two-hour set of psych-folk and indie rock to kick off the tour."
The 29-date run marks McCombs' first since the 2025 release of his critically acclaimed album Interior Live Oak, which Pitchfork named one of the year's best rock albums. Hand Habits will join as support on West Coast dates from April 4-11, performing solo in Seattle, Portland, Petaluma, and San Francisco before appearing with a full band in Los Angeles.

The Kids - Nog geen sporen van sleet

Vijftig jaar punk! Vijftig jaar The Kids!! Als dat geen reden tot een feestje is, dan weet ik het ook niet meer. Bovendien bleek dat The Kids nog nooit in De Zwerver geweest waren. Hoe is dat nu mogelijk? Maar na zaterdag is die leemte alsnog gevuld, en dat overigens op een indrukwekkende wijze.
Punk blijkt na vijftig jaar springlevend! Overal schieten jonge punkbandjes als paddenstoelen uit de grond. Eén daarvan is The Covids uit Amsterdam. Ontstaan tijdens de pandemie - vandaar die mooie naam - hebben ze intussen twee albums op hun actief en een stevige livereputatie opgebouwd.
Na een korte intro gaf de band meteen "Banned from the USA" prijs, hun laatste single en wellicht ook hun beste nummer. Een droomstart voor een aanstekelijke set vol korte, no nonsense punkliedjes in de traditie van pioniers zoals The Undertones of Buzzcocks. Zanger Mehdi Tallal leek een pas bevrijd wild dier en ging als een razende tekeer. Daarbij ging de voorraad bier meteen tegen dek waardoor het podium in een schaatsbaan veranderde. Met als gevolg dat Tallal meermaals onderuit knalde maar dat kon hem niet afremmen. Al vlug trok hij zijn shirt uit en onthulde hij zijn blote bast, waarop in grote letters 'No kids more nukes' geschreven stond. De betekenis daarvan is me niet geheel duidelijk. Dat hij geen kinderen wil, weten we uit het nummer "No kids" maar wat hij met die kernwapens wil aanvangen blijft me een raadsel.
Wat provoceren maakt wellicht deel uit van dit soort rauwe, energieke punk die verrassend melodieus klonk. Als slotakkoord diepte het viertal nog een onverwachte cover op: "Just head" van Nervous Eaters, een obscure seventies punkband uit Boston. Mooi!

Met Vaag zagen we enkele oudgedienden uit de Kortrijkse underground terug: gitarist Mich Decruyenaere (Hitch, Galatasaray,...) en zanger Bram Coussement (Haemers) met bassist Simon Pertz en drummer Pieter Blancke. Het gezelschap heeft twee EP's op zijn naam staan: ‘Rauw’ en ‘Paniek!’, maar ondanks die titels en de groepsnaam zingen ze gewoon in het Engels. Nu ja, zingen? De zanger bleek een brulboei: zijn met veel overgave gebrachte maar vrij monotone geschreeuw begon na een tijdje op de maag te liggen. De gitaarlijnen van Mich Decruyenaere klonken fris en innovatief maar dat volstond niet om van een geslaagde set te kunnen spreken. Vooral die dichtgeplamuurde sound maakte het voor me te vermoeiend. Toch bleef ik hopen op een moment waarop er wat gas zou worden teruggenomen om zo wat ademruimte te creëren, maar dat kwam er uiteindelijk niet. Maar misschien was ik hier na het argeloze geweld van The Covids niet klaar voor.
De postpunk van Vaag leek plots wat te intellectueel, gekneld als ze zaten tussen twee groepen die zweren bij rechttoe-rechtaan punk.
The Kids zijn zonder twijfel de beste punkgroep die België ooit gekend heeft en ondanks hun eerder bescheiden oeuvre, vijf studioalbums en twee livealbums, mag de band stilaan als een instituut beschouwd worden.
Hun titelloze debuut uit 1978 is een klassieker in het genre, waarvan de originele exemplaren intussen behoorlijk wat geld waard zijn. In de loop der jaren bouwden The Kids ook in de Verenigde Staten een zekere cultstatus op, waar ze, live graag geziene gasten zijn. Maar onder het huidige regime krijgen ze daar helaas geen visa meer.
De groep bestaat dus vijftig jaar, zij het met een hiaat tussen 1985 en 1996. Na de reünie bleven ze regelmatig optreden maar nieuw werk, buiten een verdwaalde single, kwam er niet meer. Ze blijven dus in feite teren op hun oude nummers die inmiddels minstens 45 jaar oud zijn, maar geen mens die hen dat kwalijk neemt. En wie ze ooit zag weet ook waarom.
De drie originele leden in de frontlinie zagen er ondanks de gevorderde leeftijd vrij patent uit: gitarist Luc van de Poel (73), zanger-gitarist Ludo Mariman (71) en bassist Danny de Haes (63, hij was pas 12 toen The Kids begonnen). En Tim Jult is intussen ook reeds zo'n veertien jaar de drummer.
De set werd traditiegetrouw geopend met "No work". De setlist veranderde, in al die jaren na de comeback, nauwelijks, vertelde een fan me. Waarom zou die trouwens moeten veranderen? Eenmaal de perfecte opbouw gevonden, dan hou je die toch. Wat klonk dit meteen fel, scherp en strak!
Meteen daarna volgden nog een trits nummers uit dat tijdloze debuut, dat er zo goed als volledig werd doorgejaagd: "Bloody Belgium", "Do you wanna know", "For the fret" en "Money is all I need". Het waren punkbommetjes die niets aan frisheid hadden ingeboet, krachtig en helder gezongen door een minzaam grijnzende Mariman.
Van de Poel, de nestor van het gezelschap, was de beweeglijkste en leek zijn leeftijd voortdurend moeiteloos te tarten. Na de vinnige Wire cover, "1 2 X U" volgde "There will be no next time", een nummer dat behoort tot het collectieve geheugen en waarop ik iets meer reactie van het publiek had verwacht.
Dat een echte moshpit zou uitblijven was al voor de show duidelijk. Daarvoor was de gemiddelde leeftijd iets te hoog. Vreemd genoeg meldden de eerste danslustigen zich pas na die hit, bij "I wanna get a job in the city", ook een knaller uiteraard.
En zo verzeilden we haast ongemerkt in de zinderende finale, waarin ik het delirium nabij kwam door "Fascist cops", "This is rock 'n roll" en "Do you love the Nazis", uitzinnige volksliederen die me op slag dertig jaar jonger deden voelen.
Toen The Kids terugkwamen voor een bis was er een groepje enthousiastelingen al "Hey ho, let's go" aan het scanderen maar Mariman liet zich niet vermurwen en zette "If the kids are united" van Sham 69 in. Uiteraard kon "Blitzkrieg bop" van de Ramones dan toch niet ontbreken en met deze twee massaal meegezongen anthems werd het alsnog een behoorlijk wild feestje voor het podium.
Na vijftig jaar bleken er bij The Kids nog geen sporen van sleet merkbaar.

Het is een publiek geheim dat de Belgische muziekscene bruist als nooit tevoren, maar om die enorme rijkdom aan talent echt te vatten, moet je soms de grens oversteken naar onze noorderburen. Op 28 maart 2026 zakte ik af naar Breda voor het festival 'Ik zie u graag' in Mezz, een plek die met zijn auditorium-gevoel doet denken aan de iconische Rotonde-zaal van de Botanique.
Voor een Belgische muziekliefhebber is dit festival een luxepositie: je krijgt de kans om bands die bij ons inmiddels de kleine podia ontgroeid zijn, weer eens in een intieme setting te ervaren, terwijl je ondertussen je vizier scherpstelt op de nieuwe generatie die klaarstaat om de zomerfestivals te bestormen.
Mijn dag begon niet in de concertzaal, maar in de nabijgelegen binnenstad bij platenzaak Velvet Records voor het allereerste concert van de dag. Het was Aghogho die de spits beetnam met een uniek geluid waarin soul, funk en jazz elkaar naadloos ontmoeten. Aghogho nam zelf de leadzang voor haar rekening terwijl ze de basgitaar hanteerde, wat direct een sterke muzikale toon zette voor de rest van de dag.
Het was de perfecte opwarmer voor het grotere werk in de Mezz zelf, waar de organisatie feilloos verliep en de doorstroming tussen de podia verrassend vlot ging.
In de Club werd ik direct weggeblazen door de energie van Gender Reveal Atomic Bomb. Deze Leuvense punkband met internationale roots wordt in de pers terecht bejubeld; hun engagement en de ongefilterde drang om tegen de gevestigde orde te schoppen deed me bij momenten denken aan de vroege dagen van Rage Against the Machine. Terwijl zij de Club op stelten zetten, bood Pyo in de Bar een fascinerende mix van post-punk en techno. De frontman deelde anekdotes over hun recente Aziatische tour en smokkelde zelfs wat Koreaans in de teksten, wat zorgde voor een speciale ambiance.
Het mooie aan dit showcase-concept is de constante kruisbestuiving. De Belgische scene is een hecht weefsel waarin iedereen elkaar lijkt te versterken. Zo zag ik de bassist van Helena Casella – die met haar mix van Braziliaanse ritmes en neo-soul voor een prachtig rustmoment zorgde – eerder al bij TJE.
Die verwevenheid zie je overal: de drummer van Ciska Ciska zat ooit bij Eosine, en de toetseniste van de getalenteerde ISE dubbelt bij The Haunted Youth. Het versterkt het gevoel dat je naar één grote muzikale familie zit te kijken.
Na de indrukwekkende set van Dressed Like Boys op het hoofdpodium, glipte ik nog één keer terug naar Velvet Records voor Alice Mae. Het is een gedurfde zet om zo'n jonge spring-in-’t-veld op een heel klein oppervlakte te laten spelen, maar met een begeleidingsband waarin ik Guillaume Lamont (Rhea, Hideous) op gitaar herkende, kreeg de set een extra dosis pit. Het was een fantastisch, intiem concert van een artieste van wie ik deze zomer veel verwacht op de grote festivalpodia.
Vlug daarna keerde ik terug naar de Mezz Bar voor Ciska Ciska. De dochter van Derek (Derek and The Dirt) toonde een enorme maturiteit met gevoelige thema's, waarbij zelfs een bloedende wijsvinger haar niet van haar stuk bracht.
Ook ISE, pas twintig jaar oud maar gezegend met een stem die door merg en been gaat, bewees dat persoonlijke teksten over thema's als een scheiding een hele zaal muisstil kunnen krijgen.
Op het hoofdpodium zagen we hoe Yong Yello de stap naar het grote publiek definitief heeft gezet met zijn nieuwe werk ‘Bennie & De Banaliteit Van Ons Bestaan’.
De energie bleef maar komen, met een loeiharde set van High Hi – na tien jaar energieker dan ooit – en de dromerige maar scherpe post-punk van Eosine. Als Belg is het een genot om The Haunted Youth, die bij ons geen introductie meer behoeft, in Breda een superprofessionele en duistere show te zien neerzetten.
Maar de echte kers op de taart was de afsluiter in de Club: Ão. Slechts twee dagen na een uitverkochte AB stonden ze hier voor een intiem concert. Het was de perfecte afsluiter van een dag vol ontdekkingen. Je voelt aan alles dat deze band klaar is voor de grote internationale podia, maar ze hier nog één keer van zo dichtbij kunnen meemaken, was een voorrecht dat ik niet had willen missen.
'Ik zie u graag' bewees wederom dat de Belgische muziekexport springlevend is. Tot volgend jaar!

De Nederlandse sopraan en frontvrouw Dianne van Giersbergen brengt vandaag 'The Quietude' uit, de nieuwe (zevende) single van haar symfonisch metal debuutalbum: 'Soulward Bound'. De release van 'Soulward Bound' komt op een unieke en onconventionele manier tot stand: verspreid over vijf jaar, met twee singles per jaar. Het volledige album zal rondom de release van de tiende en laatste single verschijnen. Door te kiezen voor deze manier van releasen kan DIANNE voor ieder nummer een wisselende bezetting van bekende en gerenommeerde internationale rock- en metalmuzikanten presenteren.
Ook haar nieuwe single, 'The Quietude', heeft weer een bijzonder verhaal en bezetting. Het is een prachtig duet tussen twee operastemmen, gezongen door DIANNE en de wereldberoemde sopraan Elena Vink, die tevens DIANNE's hoofdvakdocent (zang) was tijdens haar bachelor en master studies klassieke muziek aan het conservatorium. Het duet wordt begeleid door een vioolpartij van Ben Mathot (Ayreon), cello door Perttu Kivilaakso (Apocalyptica) en orkestratie door Joost van den Broek (Epica, Powerwolf, Sabaton).
'The Quietude' markeert het einde van een tijdperk. In deze laatste uitvoering van haar carrière zingt Elena Vink samen met DIANNE een duet dat een ware overdracht van de fakkel symboliseert: een prachtig laatste eerbetoon aan Elena's nalatenschap als docent en uitvoerend klassiek zangeres.
DIANNE: "De zevende song van mijn album heeft échte diepgang. Je hoort mij samen met sopraan Elena Vink, de vrouw die me alle kneepjes van het klassieke stemvak heeft geleerd - en die met het zingen van dit duet afscheid neemt van een glansrijke carrière. Het thema van 'The Quietude' is een gesprek tussen de dromen najagende artiest die DIANNE heden ten dage is, het kind dat ze ooit was en de vrouw die ze hoopt te worden. De drie generaties ontmoeten elkaar in een tijdloos vacuüm en spreken over hun levensdoelen, herinneringen en dromen. Het nummer is een vriendelijke herinnering aan de luisteraar om het heden te omarmen en het verleden te koesteren: 'Life is golden, behold the flame within.'

Limite’s new record 'A Thought Went Up My Mind Today' - their first album release on W.E.R.F. Records - is a surreal serpentine detour from the real world, winding and curving through the strange and secrete realms of unlikely characters. It carries you into abysses of chimera seas, cruising along like a road movie of the mind. Steered by the gripping words of Emily Dickinson, it is a solitary walk along the side of a road to parts unknown.
Single 'Under The Light, Yet Under' is a musical love letter to Emily Dickinson. The song unfolds like a riddle, revealing its meaning only at the end and reflecting on the fragile line between the living and the dead.
“Great Streets of silence led away / To Neighborhoods of Pause." Once again Emily Dickinson’s words lie at the core of the musical impulse of 'Great Streets Of Silence Led Away', the second single of the album. The band grips the counterpoint and pulls it decisively toward noise rather than silence. Sound and silence feel more tightly bound than ever, as the noisy guitar solo seems to reveal. As the piece comes to a close, the text reads: “But Epoch had no basis here / For Period exhaled.”

With ‘Celebrity Culture Simp Farm’, DOODSESKADER take aim at one of today’s most unsettling phenomena: our collective obsession with validation and the figures at the top of that “validation food chain”, from politicians and artists to influencers and streamers. The track was born out of a deep sense of exhaustion with a culture that increasingly rewards image over humanity.
Songwriter Tim De Gieter penned the song at a moment of frustration with the constant pressure to appear flawless, wealthy, attractive and untouchable in order to remain relevant. In a world where public figures are pushed to present immaculate, highly curated versions of themselves, the band questions who we choose to idolize, and why.
Yet ‘Celebrity Culture Simp Farm’ is not simply pointing fingers. The song also turns inward, serving as a wake-up call to reconsider where our time, money and attention are going. Who truly deserves our admiration, and who is merely benefiting from it?

Belgian duo DOODSESKADER return today with The Change Is Me, their third full-length album and most immediate, uncompromising statement to date. Out now via their own label 45 Records, the record marks a bold departure from the band’s previous “Year” cycle and captures a moment of artistic and personal transformation.
Blurring the lines between witch house, hip-hop, industrial dream pop, and stadium rock, The Change Is Me is a volatile, genre-defying experience. Built on grungy 90s melodies, distorted synths, sludgy bass and a mix of rapping, singing, and raw emotional outbursts, the album pulls listeners into a chaotic yet deeply human journey.
Following Year Zero (2020), Year One (2022), and Year Two (2024), DOODSESKADER initially set out to continue their annual release trajectory with a fourth installment. Instead, after completing an entire album over the course of eight months, the band made the radical decision to scrap it entirely. The result is The Change Is Me: written and recorded in just one week at Much Luv Studio, capturing the duo exactly as they are now.
“We’re people with faults and strengths, and we realized we needed to accept it,” the band explains. “This project is meant to be a document of us and of the human condition, not a self-improvement handbook.”
Conceptually, the album signals a shift. Where earlier releases wrestled with self-improvement and escaping the past, The Change Is Me embraces acceptance and presence. For the video, Camille Camille collaborated with Madrid-based photographer and visual artist Elisa Soto. After years of being inspired by each other’s work, the pair finally met to bring their art together.
“Working with Elisa had been a dream of mine for a long time. Letting her bring her visual poetry to J’ai Rêvé felt like a natural and obvious choice. Her dreamlike work and strong sensibility for colour have a rare authenticity, and I feel so blessed to share this collaboration with the world.”

“To be honest, I had to dive into my voice memos to find the first drafts of J’ai rêvé and remember when and where it came to be. I quickly found an early recording under that name, dated February 17th, 2021, and then went on to look for a photo from that same day. It was a picture of the lyrics coming out of my yellow typewriter in my bedroom at the time, in Leipzig.
I was navigating a long-distance relationship during the COVID years. Life - and pretty much everything - felt so uncertain. The only thing I could hold on to was hope and trust that life would do its thing and bring us together again somewhere, someday.
After performing the song with just my guitar for a few years, I recorded the first demo at home in Ghent in 2024, where the song took a new turn. I started hearing marching band–like drums and flutes, as if they were played by angels descending straight from heaven, telling me that everything would be okay. With the help of my acolyte Felix Baele (bass/charango), my friend Orlan Ghekiere (drums), and the flute kid inside me, J’ai rêvé - originally a sad sailor’s ballad - simultaneously became a joyful hymn to love and hope.”

Sara Salvérius & Jean-Philippe Poncin - De vaak 'vergeten verhalen' in de schijnwerpers geplaatst

Ik herinner me dat ik als kind heel aandachtig zat te luisteren naar de verhalen die mijn grootouders vertelden over de twee wereldoorlogen; niet alleen de ontbering maar ook grappige, gezapig anekdotes kwamen ter sprake. Het zijn verhalen die, ook op mijn 60ste, in mijn collectief geheugen gegrift staan.
Het sluit ook aan bij dit collectief, de verhalen die generaties ons en hun kinderen/kleinkinderen hebben verteld. Het is een schat van informatie, die niemand ongemoeid laat.
Op verzoek van het Klarafestival verbleef accordeon speelster Sara Salvérius een week in een woonzorgcentrum. De verhalen van de bewoners waren een inspiratiebron rond het concept 'verhalen zonder woorden'; ze schreef hier muziek rond en ging samenwerken met klarinet virtuoos Jean-Philippe Poncin.
Onder Sara Salvérius & Jean-Philippe Poncin (*****) gingen ze op tour en dat bracht hen op een zondagochtend naar de Foyer in de HA Concerts. De verhalen in verteltrant en muziek deden herinneringen opborrelen en maakten er een boeiende morgen van.
In het intieme kader werden gezapige, grappige of soms dieptriestige verhalen verweven in hun klankentapijt, die allerlei emoties deden opflakkeren. Het pad van de zachtmoedig- en ingetogenheid werd betreden.
Het samenspel van klarinet en accordeon zorgden voor meer dan een uurtje magie. Sara vertelde enkele anekdotes over de bewoners die ze had ontmoet. Allemaal mooie vaak vergeten verhalen die dankzij Sara en Jean-Philippe in de schijnwerpers werden geplaatst. Heel de plaat kwam aan bod. Een diverse aanpak trouwens. De emoties borrelden op, nooit gaat het teveel de treurige of frivole kant op. Alles blijft hangen binnen een gezellig kader. Sara is iemand die van vele markten thuis is, en verlegt grenzen met haar accordeonspel. Het spreekt tot de verbeelding wat ze allemaal uitvoert. Elke song heeft een boeiend, eigen persoonlijk verhaal.
Hoedanook, een bijzondere artieste. Ze wordt perfect aangevuld door Jean-Philippe die voor nog een beetje extra warmte zorgt met zijn klarinet. Mooi, dit samenspel dus.
Sara Salvérius & Jean-Philippe Poncin zijn enorm respectvol over de mensen van wie het gaat. Haar bindteksten raken en toveren een glimlach waar nodig. Intens mooi hoe de (soms vergeten) verhalen tot leven komen door deze twee instrumentalisten van accordeon en klarinet!

Tramhaus - Postpunk derby van de lage landen, België - Nederland: 1-1
Tramhaus + The Rats
Voor The Rats was dit de release show van hun nieuwe album ‘Boxing Days’, een vinnig plaatje met meer diepgang en emotie dan wat we van hen gewoon zijn, er komen immers al wat overtuigende ingetogen momenten opdraven tussen al die snerende postpunktracks.
Zanger Emile Dekeyser was op zijn zachtst uitgedrukt nogal wat nerveus, maar dit bleek eerder een pluspunt voor de zinderende postpunk van The Rats, want hoe nerveuzer hij was, hoe kwader en urgenter hij klonk, en dat kwam The Rats hun act alleen maar ten goede. De springveer heeft trouwens vanavond een nieuw record op zijn naam geschreven: hoogst aantal afgelegde kilometers op het Wintercircus podium. Om dat record ooit eens te kunnen breken, zal men in het Wintercircus Chat Pile moeten inviteren, zanger Raygun Busch is ook zo een halve gek die al kilometervretend zijn furieuze vocals eruit spuwt (misschien dan terug The Rats als support act vragen, dan kunnen die twee wildebrassen onderling uitmaken wie de beste is).
The Rats stoomden in sneltreinvaart doorheen bruisende nieuwe songs als “Rolling With the Punches”, “The Wrong Dog”, “Muck & Bullets” en een ijzersterk “The Top”.
Als ze gas terugnamen, dan was het met vernuft en passie, en dat al zeker in “Boxing Day”, een pareltje met een venijnige staart, prachtsong. Er zat heel wat drive en elektriciteit in The Rats, en dat hun sound nogal Brits klinkt hebben ze ook nooit onder stoelen of banken gestoken.
Ze gingen eruit met een publiekslieveling van het eerste uur “Old Flames”, dankzij de enthousiaste meute werd dit zo een beetje hun eigen “Bro Hymn”.
Een meer dan geslaagde release show van een bruisend plaatje.
Gelukkig zijn het niet allemaal zeemzoeterige singer-songwriters of carnavalacts die onze Noorderburen op ons afsturen, getuige de snedige postpunk van Tramhaus, een band die ondertussen al een kloeke live reputatie heeft opgebouwd, en deze is volledig terecht, als je ’t ons vraagt.
Tramhaus overtuigde met snedige en messcherpe postpunk die bij momenten naar de gekte van Viagra Boys neigde. Op hun wervelende album ‘The First Exit’ is niet één stinker te bespeuren, en vanavond werd dit zinderende plaatje er dan ook quasi volledig door gejast.
De sterkte van Tramhaus zat hem heel dikwijls in de opbouw van de songs, zo dreven “Once Again”, “Semiotocs” en “Make It Happen” zichzelf vanuit een aangename groove naar een hevige suspense. “The Cause” en “Beep Beep” waren dan weer regelrechte punkertjes die er vanaf de eerste seconde fel in vlogen en nogal wat roering veroorzaakten in het publiek.
Net als The Rats klonk Tramhaus heel Brits, met als voorbeelden frisse bandjes als Idles, Ditz, Yard Act, Shame en vooral Squid. Maar daarnaast hoorden we toch ook een zweempje Cramps, vooral in “Ffleur Hari”, een striemende garagerocker waarin de gitaren gretig uit de bocht vlogen, één van de absolute hoogtepunten. Nog zo een uitschieter was “Beech”, dat flink wat Viagra Boys bloed in de aderen had en meermaals ontplofte.
Tot slot denderde “Minus Twenty” heerlijk verder op een groovy basdreun en tintelende eighties gitaren met een hoek af, een prikkelende afsluiter van een bijzonder sterk concertje.

Terneuzen on Fire is een interessant stadsfestival dat zich dit jaar uitstrekte over drie locaties. In het verleden had het festival al mooie namen op de affiche als Nightstalker, Wiegedood, Cowboys & Aliens en Cobra The Impaler. Dit jaar waren Hemelbestormer en Gnome de publiekstrekkers. Maar het was vooral een heel veelzijdige affiche.
Het hoofd- en bijpodium vond je in De PIT in Terneuzen en dan stonden er ook nog wat acts bij Orion Records om de hoek en in de Porgy & Bess twee straten verder. Allemaal op wandelafstand, maar het gure weer en de overlappingen nodigden niet altijd uit om op verkenning te trekken.
Wel leuk was dat er tussen de namiddag- en avondprogrammatie een uurtje voorzien was voor een dinnerbreak, met geen enkele band op een podium. Dat was een uur van stilte waarin de fans gezellig zaten bij te praten in de snackbars rond De PIT en dat is een vorm van verbinding die we vandaag misschien missen op de grotere festivals waar er vaak op geen enkel moment te ontsnappen is aan geluid.
Net zo leuk: bijna iedereen die op het podium stond, ging bij andere bands in het publiek gaan staan om die aan te moedigen of om een praatje te maken met de fans. Met de locatie en de programmatie was er veel publiek vanuit België naar het Nederlandse stadje Terneuzen gekomen, terwijl er net zo goed fans uit Breda en Amsterdam kwamen.
Een pluim dus alvast voor de organisatie van dit festival, maar de muziek komt toch op de eerste plaats.
De lokale sludge/doom-helden van Mould mochten aftrappen op het grote podium van De PIT. Nog maar twee jaar geleden stonden ze daar ook al om toen hun album ‘Pull & Repulsion’ voor te stellen. Dat album heeft met zijn goede reviews de band op weg gezet naar heel wat podia in Nederland en Vlaanderen (Vestrock, supports voor Frayle en The Obsessed, …). Surfend op die hoge golf is Mould al aan het opnemen voor een tweede album en daaruit kreeg het thuispubliek al een aantal nummers te horen, naast ouder werk als “Face The North” en “Abort”. Het nieuwe werk klonk alvast prima. Laat dat tweede album maar komen.

Op het kleine podium van De PIT stond daarna Yko klaar. Een Gentse band die postrock en postmetal blendt. Vaak instrumentaal en soms ook niet. En sinds vorig jaar met een saxofoonspeler erbij. Die zorgt soms voor een Morphine-vibe in het geluid. Het wordt pas echt bijzonder als de sax distortion krijgt. Dit was mogelijk hun eerste concert in het buitenland en hun eerste officiële albumrelease moet nog komen. Als die release dezelfde emoties en intensiteit kan vangen als hun concert op Terneuzen on Fire, dan kan Yko best wel een blijvertje worden in het postmetal-landschap van de Lage Landen. “Spissatus” en “Incus” waren voor mij de hoogtepunten in de set.

Daarna ging het opnieuw naar het hoofdpodium voor Pendejo! uit Amsterdam voor opnieuw blazers op het podium (trompet en schuiftrompet deze keer). Deze band is misschien een buitenbeentje in de stoner-scene, niet alleen vanwege de blazers, ook voor de lyrics in het Spaans. Dan toch een buitenbeentje dat zichzelf prima in de markt heeft gezet, met vier albumreleases op hun eigen Chancho Records en optredens zowat overal in Europa en zelfs daarbuiten. Pendejo! speelt in Terneuzen misschien een beetje op routine, dan nog is de set best heftig. “Tu Hermana” en “No Te Vayas” komen van hun meest recente album ‘Volcan’, maar er zijn ook oudere tracks en de Iron Maiden-cover “Wrathchild”. Het publiek in De PIT reageert heel enthousiast en er wordt al wat gedanst voor het podium.

Terug naar het bijpodium voor Turpentine Valley. Deze Belgische instrumentale postmetalband stelde nog maar pas het derde album ‘Veuel’ voor. Vergeleken met het releaseconcert in Zottegem waren de reacties van het publiek in Zeeland een stuk enthousiaster. Omdat de fans de tracks inmiddels beter kennen en ook omdat het publiek in Nederland doorgaans een stuk luider reageert als ze het naar hun zin hebben. Turpentine Valley zette een strakke set neer, het was aanschuiven tot voorbij de toog om toch maar iets te kunnen zien van het concert en de hoofden wiegden mooi mee met de melodie. Bassist Thomas speelde een stukje in het publiek, maar veel ruimte kreeg hij niet. Turpentine Valley speelt deze zomer nog op Alcatraz en de agenda staat voorts al goed vol.

Na de dinnerbreak was het aan Ronker om het vuur op te poken op het hoofdpodium. Deze Belgische band zorgt al enkele jaren voor flink wat aandacht en dit jaar lijkt de grote doorbraak in zicht, met een plek op Dynamo Metalfest, Alcatraz en ArcTanGent, naast een hele rits clubconcerten overal in Europa. Het nieuwe album van Ronker kreeg hier een lovende review en live gaat de speednoise van deze vijf Belgen met snorren nog een versnelling harder. Frontman Jasper is een sensatie. Hij kruipt op elke hindernis op het podium of springt er net zo vlot opnieuw af, als om nog eens extra in de verf te zetten hoe ‘gevaarlijk’ Ronker wel niet is. Hij maakt een grapje over de Nederlanders die gaan tanken in België en haalt herinneringen op aan de song “Annelies” (van Sas van Gent in Zeeland) van Louis Neefs. Hij heeft heel veel liefde voor de programmatie en alle andere bands op de affiche en hij laat plots iedereen het refrein meezingen van “Wonderwall” van Oasis. Dit is een heel leuke band die ondanks de snelheid en de gekte muzikaal prima overeind blijft.

Het leven hangt aan elkaar van keuzes. Stereoseat op het kleine podium van De PIT zou logisch zijn geweest, toch stapte ik vrolijk naar Orion Records om de hoek voor de set van Kasmin. Het contrast met alles in De PIT kon nauwelijks groter zijn. Op twee stoeltjes badend in roze en paars licht hebben twee jonge mannen uit Amsterdam plaatsgenomen met een akoestische gitaar en een cello. Een twintigtal mensen hebben zichzelf tussen de platenbakken gepropt om aandachtig te luisteren. De liedjes van dit duo zitten ergens op het kruispunt van pop, folk en singer-songwriter. Denk aan een mix van Dressed Like Boys, Madredeus, Luka Bloom en Jeff Buckley. De cello krijgt veel tijd en ruimte en vertelt zo mee de bijna cinematografische verhalen die verteld worden. Mooi dat ook dit kan in de heel brede (om niet te zeggen eclectische) programmatie van Terneuzen on Fire.
Daarna terug naar De PIT voor Hemelbestormer. Deze Belgische postmetaltopper zie je qua festivals doorgaans vooral op een Graspop of Alcatraz, maar ze spelen vaak ook in kleinere venues en festivals. De ‘grote’ zaal stond afgeladen vol en het publiek reageert heel enthousiast en voldaan op de louterende, logge postmetal van dit viertal. Hun set staat bijna volledig in het teken van ‘The Radiant Veil’, hun recentste album, met puike versies van “Usil” en “Satre”, afgewisseld met de oudjes “Eight Billion Stars” en “In Praise of Sun”. Later dit jaar staat Hemelbestormer op Alcatraz.

Omdat ik ook de derde plek van dit stadsfestival wil beleefd hebben, ga ik naar de Porgy & Bess voor de rootsrock van de Britse Rosalie Cunningham. Ik weet niet wat de reden was – misschien was het vorige concert uitgelopen – maar het lukte daar niet om tijdig alle instrumenten op het podium aan te sluiten en een soundcheck te doen. Een half uur na het voorziene begin is de frustratie bij Rosalie zo hoog opgelopen dat ze haar band het teken geeft om toch te beginnen spelen, zonder dat alles al goed is afgestemd. Voor wie net voor het podium stond, viel het geluid nog mee. Wie verder stond, kreeg de vocalen niet door. Achteraf hoorde ik wel wat ontgoocheling bij fans die van ver gereisd kwamen speciaal voor deze band. De set in Terneuzen werd ter plekke aangepast aan de beschikbaarheid van de ingeplugde instrumenten en de speeltijd die overbleef. Hoewel de frustratie af te lezen was van de gezichten van de bandleden en het ongeduldige publiek zich liet horen, bleef iedereen heel vriendelijk en professioneel.
Het laatste stuk van de set van Rosalie Cunningham heb ik gemist om op tijd te zijn voor Gnome op het hoofdpodium. Het Antwerpse stonertrio met de rode tuinkaboutermutsen bestaat tien jaar en is overal populair en dus ook in Nederland. Vorig jaar deden ze hun eerste Amerikaanse tournee en dit jaar staat hun agenda al goed vol. Terneuzen is een soort van opwarm-concert voor hun tournee door de UK die een dag later start. Gnome speelt dus met het vertrouwen van de grote dagen. De set in Terneuzen was een dwarsdoorsnede uit het oeuvre van de band, met onder meer “Blacksmith” uit hun debuutalbum. Elke song werd op herkenningskreten onthaald door het publiek, er ontstond een moshpit en er was de eerste (en laatste) crowdsurfer van de dag.

Komatsu mag Terneuzen on Fire afsluiten op het kleine podium. Als je de carrière en successen van Komatsu afzet tegenover de podiumruimte en het late uur vind ik het misschien toch wat weinig respect voor dit Nederlandse trio. Opnieuw staat de ruimte naast de toog helemaal volgepakt. In de set zaten heel wat nummers uit ‘A Breakfast for Champions’, dat vorig jaar uitgebracht werd. De sfeer bij het publiek zat nog steeds heel goed en heel wat mensen zijn gebleven om de hele set uit te kijken, te luisteren en nog een laatste keer helemaal los te gaan. Dan zal het wel goed geweest zijn.

Op een paar schoonheidsfoutjes na was Terneuzen on Fire een heel leuk festival. Je kon hier makkelijk tien bands zien voor amper 35 euro en het waren allemaal bands met een sterke uitstraling.

Na een geslaagde eerste editie in 2025, organiseerde de Belgische band Nomad voor de tweede keer het festival Wasteland. Een avondje rond underground metal bands, in de gezellige DVG Club in Kortrijk. Echter dit jaar was er iets bijzonders. De tweede editie stond in het teken van de release van Nomad zijn debuut album 'Oxygen'. Een diverse plaat vol prikkeling en botsingen tussen spijkerhard uithalen en weemoedig rakend.
Een veelkleurige sound en een plaat, die een bijzonder pareltje is. Het was reikhalzend uitkijken hoe die songs live zouden klinken, de verwachtingen waren dus hoog gespannen..
West-Vlaanderen boven op deze avond. De Brugse metalcore formatie Alludence (***1/2), een vrij jonge band vrienden die vanuit andere projecten elkander hebben gevonden. Het fijne aan Alludence is dat ze net dat emotioneel kantje van de metalcore weten te verbinden met het barse en rauwe. Hun gezamenlijke passie voor bands als Architects, Bring Me The Horizon en Northlane kwam vocaal en in de instrumentatie aan bod.
Het kwam wat traag op gang, - we dreigden eventjes af te haken -, maar eens de band wat grip kreeg op zichzelf en op het publiek, werden alle registers opengegooid en kregen we alsnog een lekkere muzikale wervelstorm metalcore. Interessant.
Between Sirens (*****) uit het Kortrijkse ook klonk ietwat anders. Rauw en meedogenloos. Het tempo ligt hoog en wordt gedragen door de emo vocals van Jonah Holvoet. Geen rustpunt hier. Dit waren metalcore mokerslagen, we werden moeiteloos meegesleept. We zagen een milde poging tot crowdsurfen.
Between Sirens nracht deugddoende metalcore. Wat een pletwals!
Nomad (*****) stond centraal vanavond. We hadden onlangs nog een leuk interview. Lees hier . 'Een gezonde mix tussen oudere en nieuwere metalcore en andere metalinvloeden maakt ons uniek binnen de scene’, wisten ze ons te vertellen, wat ook live tot uiting kwam.
De nummers kliefden en er was de bijzondere zangpartijen. Zonder meer ging Nomad ertegenaan, rauw-ingetogen-dreigend-speels. De tempowissels volgden elkaar op.
Een ruim publiek binnen de scene wordt aangesproken.
Van de songs uit dat album is er eentje dat ons het diepst weet te raken, “Daerk”. We worden meegezogen in een andere wereld, weg van de realiteit. Een hypnotiserende, veelkleurige, boeiende sound en een album om U tegen te zeggen.
Verpulverend hard als melancholisch gevoelig ging de band te keer. Een splijtbom aan emoties die zijn publiek letterlijk meesleurt naar confrontaties met zijn demonen. Hier bleven we totaal verweesd achter.
Signs of Algorithm (*****) klonk evenzeer verpletterend. Wij leerden de band reeds kennen in 2021 op het festival Devils rock for An Angel en waren toen onder de indruk van hun performance, een nietsontziende pletwals. "Ze speelden een daverende set, alsof er 1000 wild losgeslagen fans voor het podium stonden . Missie geslaagd!", schreven we over hun optreden. En het siert hen dat ze ook met die ingesteldheid nu speelden in de DVG, voor een al sterk uitgedund publiek. De langgerekte riffs, de bonkende drums en een frontman die met bulderende stem de grond deed daveren, zorgden voor een ondoordringbare geluidsmuur. Signs of Algortihm greep zijn publiek bij de keel en dreef het tempo telkens hels op. Iedereen genoot van deze geweldige, denderende sound . Wat een pletwals ook!
Wasteland bood een podium voor extremere metal, de underground van het genre. Iedereen genoot van de verpulverende mokerslagen van de vier bands op het podium. Het leeft wel, dit genre in het Kortrijkse!

Celebrating three decades since the release of their groundbreaking debut album, legendary alternative rock band Placebo announce Placebo RE:CREATED, a powerful new reworking of the record that first introduced them to the world in 1996. The album will be released on 19 June 2026 via Elevator Lady Ltd through AWAL.
Originally arriving at the height of the Britpop era, Placebo stood in stark contrast to the prevailing cultural mood. While much of British guitar music at the time leaned into laddish nostalgia and national identity, Placebo's debut delivered something altogether more provocative and confrontational. Its songs addressed sexuality, androgyny, addiction and alienation with an honesty rarely heard in mainstream rock at the time, establishing the band as one of the most distinctive voices of their generation.
Thirty years on, Placebo RE:CREATED sees the band return to this pivotal album with a fresh perspective. The new record features reworked and embellished versions of all ten tracks from the original album plus two bonus tracks from the original release, capturing the way these songs have evolved across decades of performance while retaining the raw spirit that defined them. Among the tracks are the era-defining singles "Nancy Boy" and "36 Degrees", songs that helped establish Placebo's reputation for fearless lyricism and genre-defying sound. These new recordings amplify the urgency and attitude that made the originals resonate so strongly, while reflecting the band's growth and experience in the years since their debut.
Speaking about the new record, Placebo explain:
"We think of this record as a director's cut. We haven't recreated it from scratch. We went back to the original master tapes and brought 30 years of playing these songs live back into the record.
This project was about finally finishing the record, dragging it into the 21st century sonically, while preserving the integrity and the spirit of the original. It's not about improving it, there's nothing wrong with it, it's about completing it.
When we made the first album, we didn't yet have the experience or the studio knowledge to fully translate what was in our heads. Over the years, the songs took on a life of their own on stage; they grew, they developed, they kind of completed themselves.
It's a celebration of where we began, and a meeting point between who we were then and who we are now. A way of honoring that innocence, while letting the songs exist with the scale, confidence, and energy of the band we've become."
When Placebo first appeared in 1996, the band's aesthetic and lyrical perspective challenged expectations within British rock culture. Their visual identity - deliberately ambiguous, glamorous and confrontational - pushed against traditional ideas of gender and masculinity at a time when such conversations rarely entered mainstream discourse. In doing so, Placebo carved out a space for a different kind of alternative voice, one that resonated deeply with audiences who felt outside the cultural mainstream and is still referenced to this day by many of their contemporaries.
Now, discussions around identity, gender expression and individuality are more visible - and often more contested - than ever. Against this backdrop, the origins of Placebo's debut feel strikingly relevant again. Placebo RE:CREATED not only celebrates the legacy of the original album, but also highlights its enduring cultural significance, reaffirming how forward-thinking the record was upon its release.
The album was recreated by Brian Molko and Rob Kirwan from the original master tapes and mixed by Adam Noble. The result is a collection that preserves the immediacy and defiance of the original while pushing the sound into new territory - reflecting both the band's long history with these songs and their continued creative evolution.
Later this year Placebo will embark on an extensive UK and European arena tour to celebrate this momentous anniversary. The band will be performing songs from their first two albums, Placebo and Without You I'm Nothing - some of which have not been performed live for over 20 years! The tour kicks off in Portugal before heading across Europe and ending in the UK, seeing them perform to hundreds of thousands of fans across 36 dates. Later this month Placebo will , at the invitation of The Cure's Robert Smith, take to the stage alongside their good friends 'Garbage' for the Teenage Cancer Trust concert series at the legendary Royal Albert Hall. The annual series has long been one of the UK's most respected charity music events, bringing together major artists to raise funds for young people facing cancer.

Brighton’s own Lambrini Girls, the explosive duo of Phoebe Lunny (vocals/guitar) and Selin Macieira (bass), share their new single “Cult of Celebrity.” From its opening guitar lick, the duo’s new song is a relentless, thrashing indictment of the dark underbelly and backdoor dealings of the world’s global elites that has been exposed in recent years. Speaking about their new single, the Lambrini Girls had this to say:
“The age old tale, of selling your soul to the devil has been fabled accounts of high society for years. However due to recent events come to light- it turns out that the elite are very much actually, the devil incarnate, baby eating, pedos. What a fucking surprise! They had no souls to sell in the first place.”

Renowned as one of the best live bands to come out of the UK in recent memory, Lambrini Girls will be taking their spectacular live show on the road throughout the US and Europe this year. Beginning with a series of headline North American live dates including a show at Brooklyn’s Warsaw, the band will play festivals across the Northern Hemisphere this Summer including Bonnaroo, a Warped Tour stop in DC, Barcelona’s Primavera Sound, Gothenburg’s Way Out West and more.
Lambrini Girls breached the door to global rock consciousness with the raw charisma, barbed humor and combustible shredding of their debut album Who Let The Dogs Out in 2025. GA-20 - Adembenemende blues dankzij een injectie rock-'n-roll
Ondanks alle ellende liep ik de afgelopen dagen in jubelstemming rond want mijn favoriete bluesband was opnieuw in het land. Zo zullen er wellicht nog meer geweest zijn, want de N9 liep behoorlijk vol voor alweer een passage van GA-20 in ons land.
Maar eerst mocht een ander groepje dat me ook nauw aan het hart ligt het podium inpalmen: het Gentse Harvesters. Ik zag ze ongeveer een jaar geleden nog in het voorprogramma van James Leg in de 4AD waar ze vertelden dat ze druk bezig waren met hun tweede plaat. Die is nu af maar blijkbaar nog niet uit.
De officiële voorstelling staat pas gepland op 30 april in de Missy Sippy. Zo lang hielden ze ons echter niet in spanning want ‘Do some good’, zo heet de nieuwe plaat, werd in de N9 integraal en met veel gretigheid door de boxen gejaagd. Allemaal nieuwe nummers dus - enkel de vooruitgeschoven single "Blackbird" was me bekend - waaruit bleek dat Harvesters resoluut de kaart van de seventies rock heeft gekozen. Americana en rootsrock invloeden leken definitief verdampt.
Een opmerkelijke keuze want de seventies worden - punk buiten beschouwing gelaten - vaak gezien als de meest dorre periode uit de rockgeschiedenis. Dat neemt uiteraard niet weg dat ook toen tal van uitstekende platen verschenen. Harvesters was ook zo slim om de stadionsound die toen voor het eerst de kop opstak links te laten liggen en te kiezen voor een onopgesmukt geluid dat eerder de geur van verschaald bier en rokerige pubs opriep.
De bas van Bart Soens en de drums van Lion De Clerck (Leopard Skull, Straight Shooter) zorgden voor een robuuste verankering terwijl de gitaren van Paul Lamont (Hitch, Grand Blue Heron), tevens verantwoordelijk voor de donkere, korrelige stem, en Miguel Moors (Blackup) voortdurend de sterren van de hemel speelden. Black Crowes, Robin Trower en Tom Petty worden wel eens naar voor geschoven als inspiratiebronnen, maar dat heb ik er niet in gehoord. Wel riepen de melodieuze gitaarlijnen een enkele keer herinneringen op aan Bad Company.
Eén nummer (een titel kan ik er helaas niet op plakken), dat een vergeten klassieker uit de seventies had kunnen zijn, sprong er zo uit dankzij de heldere, meteen vertrouwd aandoende gitaarriffs. De andere songs hebben wellicht wat meer tijd nodig om zich helemaal te laten doorgronden. Ondanks het ontbreken van de parels uit hun eerste plaat, ‘At Rosie’s Palace’, werd het een knappe set die me in ieder geval nieuwsgierig maakt naar de nieuwe elpee.
Nadat Matthew Stubbs na jarenlange dienst bij Charlie Musselwhite op de keien werd gezet, begon hij in 2018 een eigen bluesbandje om zo de eindjes aan elkaar te kunnen knopen. Met GA-20 schuimde hij eerst de café's en restaurants van zijn thuisstad Boston af maar al snel bleek zijn rauwe, compromisloze blues aan te slaan bij een breder publiek en begon hij heel intensief te touren, zowel in Amerika als Europa.
Zo kon ik de groep maar liefst zeven keer aan het werk zien zonder daarbij verre verplaatsingen te moeten maken. In 2024 leek het noodlot toe te slaan toen zowel Pat Faherty (zang, gitaar) als Tim Carman (drums) de groep totaal onverwacht de rug toekeerden. Vooral Pat Faherty, toch het uithangbord van de band, leek met zijn punk charisma onvervangbaar. Maar Matthew Stubbs is een doorzetter. Hij zocht en vond twee vervangers bij Ward Hayden & The Outliers (het vroegere Girls Guns And Glory), een old school country band die enkele keren had geopend voor GA-20.
Faherty en Carman begonnen van hun kant een eigen band, Canyon Lights, waarmee ze begin mei te zien zijn op twee Nederlandse bluesfestivals: Moulin Blues en Rhythm & Blues Night. Maar hun debuut, ‘Breathe easy’, waar ik hoopvol naar uitkeek, valt me serieus tegen .
Vorig jaar zag ik GA-20 voor het eerst in de nieuwe bezetting in café De Zwerver en toen bleek al dat de groep niets aan kracht had ingeboet. In de N9 kwamen ze zo mogelijk nog sterker uit de verf. Cody Nilsen zal zijn voorganger, Pat Faherty, nooit helemaal doen vergeten. Daarvoor was die laatste, met zijn immense krullenbol en onorthodoxe sprongen, te nadrukkelijk visueel aanwezig. Maar nu ik hem een tweede keer bezig zag, dringt de conclusie zich op dat Nilsen vocaal minstens even sterk is en als gitarist zelfs de betere.
En gitaren, daar draait het toch om bij GA-20. Twee gitaristen mochten, zonder dat een bassist hen voor de voeten liep, elkaar op het voorplan afwisselen: de melodieus en wat bedaarder spelende Matthew Stubbs en de scherpere en venijniger uithalende Cody Nilsen. Stubbs mag dan herhaaldelijk zijn liefde voor Chicago Blues hebben uitgesproken, maar wat GA-20 bracht was zoveel meer dan dat. 95% van de contemporaine Chicago blues vind ik eigenlijk strontvervelend. Maar GA-20 geeft de blues, met een gezonde injectie rock-'n-roll en een uitgekiende songkeuze, een extra dimensie. De blues heruitvinden doen ze niet - dat is ook helemaal niet nodig - maar ze laten haar wel weer fris en opwindend klinken.
De set werd meteen schitterend geopend met het opgewekte "Cryin' & Pleadin'" van Billy Boy Arnold, misschien wel het beste nummer van hun laatste plaat, ‘Orphans’. Er zouden nog vier nummers uit die plaat volgen maar ook het oudere werk kwam ruimschoots aan bod. Zoals de twee rauwe Hound Dog Taylor covers, "Give me back my wig" en "She's gone", altijd goed voor een hoogtepunt. Bo Diddley's "Crackin' up" werd dan weer wat onderkoeld gebracht. Voor mij had het wat feestelijker gemogen, maar het was in elk geval eens wat anders.
Halverwege de set verlieten Stubbs en drummer Josh Kiggans het podium en worstelde Cody Nilsen zich door Lightnin' Hopkins' "I'm leaving you now". Hoewel de laatste plaat niet zo heel lang geleden verscheen, had een aantal nieuwe nummers al zijn weg naar de setlist gevonden en zeker niet de minste. "Can't hold out" van Elmore James, geschreven door Willie Dixon en "Crazy Love", ook al uit de pen van Willie Dixon maar in 1965 op single uitgebracht door Buddy Guy. Vooral dat laatste was opnieuw een openbaring!
De opbouw van de set bleef ongewijzigd met ook hier tegen het einde ruimte voor een uitstapje tussen het publiek. Maar waar Pat Faherty vroeger als een razende de menigte in dook, zoekt Cody Nilsen het rustig op om daarna te proberen de stilste noot ooit te spelen.
Als uitsmijter zorgde het aan Little Richard schatplichtige "Be my lonesome" nog voor een brok zinderende rock-'n-roll. En omdat zowel Stubbs als Nilsen 'Dale' als tweede naam hebben werd "Nitro" van Dick Dale gekozen als bis.
Een alweer adembenemende set kon nauwelijks mooier eindigen dan met deze spetterende surf-instrumental.

Friendly Fire presenteert Radiohead-gitarist Ed O'Brien voor concert naar Carré
Engelse gitarist met nieuw album voor eerste keer in Nederland als soloartiest
Radiohead-gitarist Ed O'Brien komt naar Koninklijk Theater Carré voor een concert op 4 oktober 2026. Het optreden is het eerste concert van de zeven optredens tellende An Evening With… Blue Morpho tournee en staat in het kader van zijn nieuwe album Blue Morpho, dat op 22 mei verschijnt. Het is de eerste keer dat de invloedrijke gitarist als soloartiest optreedt in Nederland.
Koninklijk Theater Carré
Voor de tournee An Evening With… Blue Morpho, met tussenstops in Duitsland, Frankrijk, Italië, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, en Nederland, daagt O’Brien zichzelf uit. In plaats van de plaat simpelweg na te spelen, is de liveshow opgevat als een vloeiende en meeslepende ervaring – een ode aan de muziek waarin elk optreden zich verder ontwikkelt en een eigen leven gaat leiden. Met een band bestaande uit leden die ook op het album te horen zijn, waaronder musical director Dave Okumu, is daardoor elk optreden uniek en een belevenis die op zichzelf staat.
Radiohead
Als gitarist van Radiohead groeide de Engelse Ed O’Brien (1968) uit tot een wereldster die overal ter wereld voor uitverkochte stadions en arena’s optreedt. Omdat in die band zanger/gitarist Thom Yorke en gitarist Jonny Greenwood het gros van de liedjes schrijven, bewaarde O’Brien zijn zelfgeschreven liedjes voor zichzelf. Tot in 2020. Toen debuteerde hij onder de naam EOB, zijn initialen, met het album Earth. Geïnspireerd door de tijd dat hij met zijn gezin in Brazilië woonde maakte hij zijn solodebuut, bijgestaan door een scala aan gastartiesten. Onder andere bandmaatje uit Radiohead Colin Greenwood, maar ook Portisheadgitarist Adrian Utley en Wilcodrummer Glenn Kotche zijn op het goed ontvangen album te horen. O’Brien schreef niet alleen de liedjes op het album, hij speelt ook gitaar en zingt.
Blue Morpho
Ondanks goede recensies trad O’Brien slechts een handvol keren op als EOB. Door de coronapandemie werd zijn Noord-Amerikaanse tournee geannuleerd. De Engelsman maakt daardoor op 4 oktober 2026 zijn solodebuut op Nederlandse grond in Koninklijk Theater Carré. Dit optreden staat in het teken van Blue Morpho, zijn nieuwe soloalbum, dat op 22 mei uitkomt. De zeven liedjes verschijnen niet onder de naam EOB, maar onder zijn eigen naam. Gastartiesten zijn onder andere Radioheaddrummer Philip Selway, bassist Dave Okumu van The Invisible en het Tallinn Chamber Orchestra en werd geproduceerd door befaamd producer Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence + The Machine, Rihanna).
Wim Hof
Door de coronapandemie moest O’Brien noodgedwongen stoppen met werken en belandde hij in een depressie. De oplossing kwam door urenlang in zijn eentje zonder doel muziek te maken. Dat werd de basis van Blue Morpho. Geïnspireerd door de landelijke omgeving van zijn woonplaats in Wales, de uitspraak ‘to know the dark, go dark’ van dichter Wendell Berry en de lessen van iceman Wim Hof schreef hij de zeven liedjes op het album. Het schrijven van nieuwe, eigen muziek hielp hem uit de depressie. Het resultaat is Blue Morpho, waarbij O’Brien zijn muzikale pallet verbreedt. Zo zijn er invloeden uit triphop te horen, maar ook liedjes die meer als folk klinken en breed uitwaaierende geluidstexturen. Live betekent dat een uitdaging voor een artiest die het gewend is zijn grenzen op te zoeken en zijn creativiteit uit te dagen.
